Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis qujiangensis was described in 2017 by Chen, He, Chen & Chen, part of a wave of narrow-range Cobitis species split out of China's river systems as ichthyologists worked through the genus's cryptic diversity in the region. The Catalog of Fishes — the standing authority for valid names — lists the species as valid, with the type locality in the Qujiang River, the drainage that gives the fish its name.
It sits in the genus Cobitis, the type genus of the family Cobitidae, the "true" spined and pond loaches. Cobitis is a large, taxonomically active genus of small Eurasian loaches distributed from Western Europe across Russia and into East Asia, and Chinese Cobitis in particular has been repeatedly revised as new molecular and morphological work resolves species that were previously lumped together. No prior combination is in wide use for this fish; it has been described directly under its current name.
Morphology
Cobitis qujiangensis is a small loach, reaching a maximum of about 2.5 in standard length, in keeping with the modest size typical of the genus.
