Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis sakahoko was formally described by Nakajima and Suzawa in 2015 in Ichthyological Research (63(1):68–78), based on a holotype and nine paratypes collected from the Oyodo River system, including the type locality of the Takazaki River near Mt. Kirishima in southern Kyushu, Japan. The species is distinguished from its congeners by a combination of characters including a lamina circularis at the base of the pectoral fin in males, a comparatively short snout (32.1–38.2% of head length), and a long maxillary barbel.
It belongs to the genus Cobitis, the type genus of the family Cobitidae — the "spined loaches" — a large Eurasian group whose taxonomy has been repeatedly revised as cryptic species have been split apart using morphology and genetics. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the authority for valid names, lists Cobitis sakahoko as a valid, currently accepted species with no synonyms recorded.
Morphology
As a member of Cobitidae, Cobitis sakahoko carries the family's diagnostic feature: an erectile spine housed in a groove beneath each eye, which the fish can flick out defensively when handled or threatened. Like other true loaches its body is covered in tiny, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin functionally naked — a trait that matters for disease susceptibility and medication sensitivity rather than for appearance.
The species is small even by loach standards, reaching a maximum reported length of about 3 in SL in males and 3.5 in SL in females, with females growing distinctly larger — a pattern seen elsewhere in the genus. Diagnostic detail beyond the original description is limited in the sources available; the elongate, slender body and elongated maxillary barbel typical of Cobitis are consistent with what has been reported for this species.
Habitat
Cobitis sakahoko is endemic to the Oyodo River system on Kyushu Island in southern Japan, a fast-flowing mountain river system in the vicinity of Mt. Kirishima. FishBase describes it as benthopelagic, occurring in the middle reaches of the river over a sandy bottom — the substrate this genus is built to sift and bury in.
This is a coldwater, temperate species, not a tropical one. Its closest well-studied relative, the European spined loach Cobitis taenia, naturally inhabits water in roughly the 57–64 °F range, and as an inhabitant of a Kyushu mountain river system, Cobitis sakahoko is best understood the same way: a cool-water specialist rather than a fish for a heated tropical aquarium. Exact temperature and water-chemistry figures specific to this species were not accessible in the sources consulted; the coldwater classification follows from its habitat and its placement within Cobitis.
Feeding
Cobitis sakahoko is a benthic omnivore. FishBase records a trophic level of 3.2, consistent with a diet of small invertebrates and organic detritus sifted from the riverbed — the typical foraging strategy of a sand-dwelling loach, taking worms, insect larvae, small crustaceans and fine organic matter as it works over a soft substrate.
No aquarium-specific feeding data exists for this species, since it is not established in the hobby. Based on its genus and habitat, a keeper attempting to house it would need to replicate a soft, sand-sifting foraging surface and offer small sinking invertebrate foods rather than assuming it forages like a warm-water community fish.
Mating
No species-specific courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Cobitis sakahoko in the sources available; data is sparse for this narrow-range, recently-described species. What can be said comes from its placement in Cobitis: the genus's better-studied temperate members, such as C. taenia, spawn in spring, scattering adhesive eggs among aquatic plants with no pairing bond and no nest.
Given the coldwater, seasonal nature of its Kyushu mountain-river habitat, a spring spawning trigger tied to rising temperature and photoperiod is the plausible pattern for this species as well, though this has not been confirmed in the literature reviewed.
Breeding
Cobitis sakahoko has not been reported as bred in the aquarium, and honestly should be described as rarely or never bred in captivity — it is not established in the hobby at all. As a member of the genus Cobitis, its expected reproductive mode is that of the spined and pond loaches generally: an egg-scatterer, releasing adhesive eggs among plants with no parental care whatsoever.
Several temperate Cobitidae — including some Cobitis species, Sabanejewia, and the dojo/weather loach Misgurnus — have been pond- or tank-spawned by specialists working with cool, unheated systems that mimic a natural seasonal cycle. There is no record of that having been attempted or achieved for Cobitis sakahoko specifically. Breeding mode: egg-scatterer; parental care: none.
In the aquarium
Cobitis sakahoko is not a hobby fish. It is a narrow-range Japanese endemic, formally described only in 2015, assessed as Endangered, and known chiefly from taxonomic and ichthyological literature rather than from the aquarium trade — there is no evidence of it being kept, sold, or bred by hobbyists. Any hypothetical care approach would need to follow the coldwater, sand-bed, fast-flow template general to Cobitis rather than the warm, still-water setups common in the loach hobby.
As with all true loaches it would be near-scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper and full-strength medications, and — given its Endangered status and single-river endemism — there is no ethical justification for collecting wild specimens for the trade. This is a species to know about rather than to keep.
Conservation
Cobitis sakahoko is assessed by the IUCN as Endangered (EN), an assessment reflecting its extremely restricted range — endemic to a single river system, the Oyodo, on Kyushu Island — combined with population decline, under criteria B1ab(iii,v)+2ab(iii,v): a small area of occupancy and extent of occurrence, and observed or inferred decline in habitat quality and population size.
The species faces the pressures typical of restricted-range stream endemics in developed landscapes: habitat alteration and degradation of its home river system. It has no presence in the aquarium trade, so trade pressure is not a relevant threat here — the risk is entirely tied to the health of the Oyodo River system itself.
