Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis semizonata was described by the English zoologist Edward Blyth in 1860, published in the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, with a type locality in the Sitang River and its tributary streams in the Tenasserim provinces of Myanmar (Burma). Some records list an earlier date of 1855 under the name Homalopsis semizonata, an alternate spelling and combination associated with the same description.
Like much of the old Nemacheilinae and Cobitidae complex, this species has been reclassified repeatedly as ichthyologists split and re-split the genera around it — historical treatments have placed it in Noemacheilus, Acanthocobitis and Paracanthocobitis at different points. The Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority for valid names, currently retains it as Cobitis semizonata within family Cobitidae, and that is the combination used here. Given this history, records under any of those older generic names in older literature or trade lists likely refer to the same fish.
Morphology
As a member of Cobitidae, the true spined loaches, Cobitis semizonata carries the family's defining feature: an erectile spine tucked into a groove beneath each eye, which the fish can flick out when handled or threatened. It is a small, elongate, laterally compressed loach in the general Cobitis mould — a slender, near-scaleless body built for sifting through soft sediment rather than for open water.
Detailed modern morphometric data for this species is sparse; beyond the original 1860 description and its type-locality diagnosis, there is little published redescription to draw exact proportions or colour-pattern detail from. What can be said with confidence, from its placement in the genus and family, is the near-scaleless, sensitive skin shared by all Cobitis — a point that matters far more for care than any measurement.

The type locality for Cobitis semizonata is the Sitang River and its tributary streams in the Tenasserim provinces of Myanmar — a hill-country drainage in the country's southeast. That setting, together with the wider pattern in Cobitis of temperate-to-subtropical Eurasian stream species, points to cool-to-moderate flowing water over soft sediment rather than a warm tropical lowland habitat, though modern field data confirming the exact thermal regime at this locality has not been located.
Cobitis as a genus are benthic fish of clear, oxygen-rich, slow-to-moderate flowing or still water, generally over sand or silt substrate that lets them burrow and forage. Given the uncertainty in the record for this particular species, it is fairest to treat it as a cool-to-subtropical highland-stream fish rather than assume either temperate or fully tropical conditions.
Feeding
Cobitis semizonata is presumed to feed as other members of its genus do: a benthic omnivore that sifts soft sand and silt for small invertebrates — worms, insect larvae, small crustaceans and molluscs — along with detritus and organic matter. Cobitis species forage largely by night, drawing on a specialised branchial filtering apparatus to sort food items from ingested substrate before expelling the sand through the gills.
No species-specific feeding study exists for C. semizonata, so this picture is inferred from the genus rather than confirmed directly for this fish. Given its status as a little-known, data-sparse species from a single documented locality, the honest picture is that this fish has rarely if ever been deliberately bred in the aquarium. Any keeper attempting it should look to the general Cobitis pattern — a seasonal temperature cue, soft sediment, and adults removed after spawning to prevent egg predation — while recognising that species-specific confirmation does not exist.
In the aquarium
Cobitis semizonata is essentially unknown in the mainstream aquarium trade; it does not have an established, well-documented care history the way its higher-profile relatives do. What can be said comes from its genus and family. Like other Cobitis, it is likely to want a soft sand or fine silt substrate to burrow and forage in, clean and well-oxygenated water, and — given the type locality in a Myanmar hill drainage — probably cooler, well-aerated conditions rather than a warm, sluggish tropical setup, though this should be treated as a reasonable inference rather than a confirmed requirement.
As with all Cobitidae, the skin is near-scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments; any keeper who does source this fish should default to gentle, reduced-dose medication and careful water quality management. Given how little is documented, prospective keepers should treat this as a specialist, research-first fish rather than a straightforward community species.
Conservation
Cobitis semizonata has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List, so it carries no formal conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. Its known range appears to be narrow — the Sitang River and tributary streams of Myanmar's Tenasserim provinces — which is the kind of small-range stream distribution that often goes unassessed simply for lack of survey effort, not because the species is known to be secure.
No population trend, threat assessment, or trade data specific to this species has been located. Given the general pressures facing Southeast Asian freshwater stream systems — deforestation, damming and water extraction — a narrow-range highland species like this one would be a reasonable candidate for future formal assessment.
