Cobitis stephanidisi, the Velestino spined loach, is one of Europe's most narrowly confined freshwater fish — known only from the Pinios drainage of Thessaly in central Greece. It is a small, slender, temperate-zone member of the true loach family Cobitidae, the group that carries the erectile suborbital spine that gives the family its name. First described from a karstic spring near Velestino, the species vanished from its type locality by 1998 and was only rediscovered in 2001 at a nearby site — a history that captures how precarious its existence is. This is a coldwater spring specialist, not a tropical aquarium fish, and it is essentially unknown in the hobby; almost everything written about it comes from conservation surveys rather than aquarium experience.

Taxonomy & naming

Cobitis stephanidisi was described by the Greek ichthyologist Panos S. Economidis in 1992, part of a wave of splits that separated Greece's many locally endemic spined loaches from the widespread, broadly-defined Cobitis taenia of older literature. It remains in the genus Cobitis, the type genus of the family Cobitidae — the spined loaches — alongside relatives such as Sabanejewia and, more distantly, the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus. The species epithet honours Dr. Alexander I. Stephanidis (1911–1990), a Greek ichthyologist; the genus name Cobitis derives from a Greek word applied to small sardine-like fish.

As with many Balkan and Anatolian Cobitis, older records and field guides may still lump this fish under Cobitis taenia or confuse it with the co-occurring Cobitis puncticulata; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises Cobitis stephanidisi as a valid, distinct species and that combination should be used without alteration.

Morphology

Cobitis stephanidisi is a small, elongate, laterally compressed loach, with females reaching a maximum of about 3.5 in standard length — males run smaller, as is typical for the genus. Like every member of the family Cobitidae it carries the erectile suborbital spine beneath the eye that names the spined loaches, a small defensive weapon it can flick out when handled or threatened. Its skin is effectively naked, covered only in minute embedded scales, which makes it — like its relatives — highly sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications.

This is a coldwater, temperate-zone fish, not a tropical one: it belongs to a genus whose members are spring- and stream-dwellers of Europe, Anatolia and the Caucasus, adapted to cool, stable water rather than warm tropical rivers.

Habitat

The species is a Greek endemic known only from the Pinios river drainage in Thessaly, central Greece, roughly between 42° and 35°N latitude. Its type locality is the karstic springs at Kefalovriso, near the town of Velestino; the population there was extirpated by 1998, and the species was rediscovered only in 2001 at Chasambali, another site within the same drainage. It is protected within a single Natura 2000 site, Karla–Mavrovouni–Kefalovryso Velestinou–Neochori.

It lives in lowland springs and slow watercourses with little current, silty bottoms, underwater vegetation and the wetlands that surround karstic spring systems. This is a cool, stable, low-flow habitat rather than a fast hillstream or a warm lowland river — a spring specialist bound to the particular hydrology of its home drainage.

Feeding

No feeding studies specific to Cobitis stephanidisi have been documented in the available sources, but its biology follows the pattern typical of the genus: a sand- and silt-sifting benthic omnivore that forages over soft substrates for worms, insect larvae, small crustaceans and detritus. A soft, silty bed — matching its spring and slow-water habitat — would be needed for it to forage naturally.

Given how little is published on this species, any statement on diet beyond the general Cobitis pattern would be guesswork; data here is genuinely sparse.

Mating

FishBase records a distinct courtship for this species: the male wraps completely around the female within dense vegetation, typically filamentous algae, before she releases her eggs. This wrapping embrace is a known reproductive behaviour among spined loaches and is followed by the release of adhesive eggs into the plant mass rather than any nest-building or substrate preparation.

Spawning is presumed to follow the seasonal pattern typical of temperate Cobitis — occurring in spring as water temperatures rise — though no site-specific breeding season has been documented for this exact population.

Breeding

Cobitis stephanidisi is an egg-scatterer with no parental care, consistent with the wider spined-loach pattern: after the male's wrapping courtship, adhesive eggs are released among plants and left to develop unguarded. Several temperate members of Cobitidae — including other Cobitis, Sabanejewia, and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus — have been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and conservation breeders, unlike their tropical relatives (the horseface loach Acantopsis, or Lepidocephalichthys), which generally have not.

There is no record in the available sources of Cobitis stephanidisi having been bred in captivity. Given its extremely restricted range and endangered status, any captive breeding that has occurred would most plausibly be tied to conservation efforts rather than the aquarium hobby — this is not a fish sold or spawned in the trade.

In the aquarium

Cobitis stephanidisi is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense — it is a critically restricted conservation-priority endemic, not a species collected, traded or kept by hobbyists. There are no husbandry records to draw on. Anyone encountering the species would do so only through Greek conservation or research programmes, not the ornamental trade.

If it were ever kept, the guiding principles for temperate Cobitis would apply: cool, unheated to lightly-heated water rather than tropical temperatures, a soft silty substrate for natural foraging, gentle flow, and caution with medications given the naked, scaleless skin shared by the whole family. But this is a theoretical extension from genus-level knowledge, not documented practice for this species.

Conservation

Cobitis stephanidisi is assessed as Endangered (EN) on the IUCN Red List as of 2023, under criteria B1ab(iii), reflecting its extremely small range confined to a single river drainage. The EUNIS database, drawing on EU and Natura 2000 assessments, lists the species even more severely as Critically Endangered — a divergence worth noting rather than resolving, since both reflect the same underlying fact: this is one of Greece's most threatened endemic freshwater fish, with a population history that includes local extirpation.

The species vanished from its original type locality at Kefalovriso by 1998 and was rediscovered only in 2001 at Chasambali within the same Pinios drainage. It is protected at one Natura 2000 site (Karla–Mavrovouni–Kefalovryso Velestinou–Neochori), but its survival depends entirely on the health of a small number of karstic spring systems, making it acutely vulnerable to spring degradation, water abstraction and habitat disturbance. It plays no role in the aquarium trade, so its threats are purely habitat-driven, not collection-driven.
