Cobitis striata is a small, temperate spined loach endemic to Japan and Korea, where it lives out of the sight of most aquarists in clear, pebbly-bottomed streams. It belongs to the family Cobitidae and carries the erectile suborbital spine that names the group, but everything else about it points away from the warm, planted tanks most loaches are sold for: this is a coldwater fish, most content between about 18 and 72 °F, and it has no confirmed spawning record in the aquarium at all. It grows to only around 4 in, sifts sand and grazes algae off rocks, and — like every scaleless loach — needs gentle handling with medications.

Taxonomy & naming

Cobitis striata was described by the Japanese ichthyologist Hakuya Ikeda in 1936 and remains in the genus Cobitis, the type genus of the family Cobitidae — the true spined loaches. It sits among a large, taxonomically active Eurasian genus in which many species look nearly identical externally and are distinguished chiefly by chromosome number, colour-pattern detail and genetics; Loaches Online notes that C. striata is separated from the widespread European spined loach Cobitis taenia largely on DNA evidence rather than obvious external differences.

The genus name Cobitis derives from the Greek kobios (a bottom-dwelling fish, related to "gobio"), a nod to its sand-burrowing habits, while the specific epithet striata is Latin for "striped," describing the fish's patterning. No taxonomic synonymy issues are noted in the cache beyond its placement within the wider Cobitis-taenia species complex; the Catalog of Fishes is treated here as governing the valid combination.

Morphology

This is a small, slender, cylindrical loach reaching a maximum of about 4 in total length — modest even by the standards of the spined loaches. Like other Cobitidae it carries an erectile spine hidden in a groove beneath each eye, which it can flick out for defence, and its skin is effectively naked: the scales are minute and deeply embedded rather than forming an overlapping armour, which makes the fish, like its relatives, easily stressed by rough handling and sensitive to medication.

As the epithet suggests, the body carries a striped or mottled pattern typical of the genus, used for camouflage against pebble and sand substrates. Cobitis striata is a coldwater, temperate species — a point worth stressing because so many loaches sold in the trade are tropical; this one is not, and its whole biology, from habitat to husbandry, follows from that.

Habitat

Cobitis striata is endemic to Japan and Korea, where it inhabits clear, slow-flowing streams with pebbly or sandy bottoms. These are well-aerated, temperate waters — cool for much of the year rather than warm — and the fish needs a soft substrate to burrow into, a behaviour typical of the genus and shared with sand-sifting loaches generally.

Water chemistry at these East Asian sites runs close to neutral to slightly alkaline, around pH 7.0–7.7, with medium hardness not exceeding about 12 dH. This is a world away from the warm, soft, blackwater conditions favoured by many popular tropical loaches, and keepers should not default to "loach = warm tank" thinking for this species.

Feeding

Cobitis striata is an omnivorous scavenger that forages over the stream bed for whatever sinking food it can find — small invertebrates such as daphnia and other live or frozen fare — while also grazing algae off rocks and pebbles. This dual habit, benthic scavenging plus surface algae-grazing, is typical of the genus and reflects its clear, pebble-bottomed stream habitat rather than the soft leaf-litter beds favoured by some tropical relatives.

In the aquarium it should be offered sinking foods — pellets, wafers, and live or frozen invertebrate fare — along with access to algae-covered surfaces to graze. A soft sand substrate lets it express its natural sifting and burrowing behaviour while feeding.

Mating

No sexual dimorphism or courtship behaviour is documented for Cobitis striata in the sources consulted; the cache and available literature are silent on this point, and rather than guess we note the data is sparse. What can be said with more confidence is the general pattern for the genus: temperate Cobitis species that have been observed spawning typically do so in spring as water warms, scattering eggs among vegetation.

Given that Cobitis striata has no confirmed aquarium spawning record at all, any account of its mating behaviour beyond the wild habitat and stream context would be speculation. Prospective breeders should expect this to be an open question rather than a solved one.

Breeding

Cobitis striata is not recorded to have bred in aquaria. Based on the pattern seen across the genus, an egg-scattering strategy with no parental care — adults releasing adhesive eggs among plants or gravel, typically in spring — is the plausible mode, and several other temperate Cobitidae species, including some Cobitis, Sabanejewia and the dojo or weather loach Misgurnus, have been pond- or tank-spawned under the right seasonal conditions. But this remains unconfirmed for C. striata specifically, and it should not be assumed to breed readily.

Any keeper attempting to spawn this species would be working from the coldwater-loach playbook: a seasonal temperature drop and rise to mimic spring warming, clean well-oxygenated water, and fine-leaved plants or a spawning mop for the adhesive eggs to catch on. There is no parental care to plan around — once eggs are released, the adults take no further part.

In the aquarium

Cobitis striata is a coldwater fish and should be kept accordingly — an unheated tank or one held around 64–72 °F (64–72°F) suits it far better than a heated tropical setup. Water should be well-aerated and close to neutral, pH 7.0–7.7, with moderate hardness up to about 12 dH. A soft sand or fine pebble substrate is essential so the fish can sift and burrow, and, being a small, sociable stream fish, it does best in a group.

As with all Cobitidae, this species is scaleless and therefore sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally — dose cautiously and watch closely, since loaches are often among the first fish in a tank to show signs of ich. Because it is a coolwater specialist rather than a tropical community fish, tankmates should be chosen from other temperate or unheated-tank species rather than typical tropical community stock.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Cobitis striata as Least Concern, with an assessment dated January 2023. As an East Asian stream endemic restricted to Japan and Korea, its status should still be watched: many small-range temperate stream loaches face localized pressures from habitat alteration even when the overall category is not yet threatened.
