Achille Valenciennes described this fish in 1846 as Cobitis suborbitalis, placing it in Cobitis — the genus that anchors the family Cobitidae, the true spined and pond loaches of Eurasia. The genus Cobitis has been extensively revised since the mid-19th century, and modern taxonomy assigns this species to Nemacheilus suborbitalis, moving it out of Cobitidae and into the stone-loach lineage (historically Nemacheilidae, sometimes still treated as a subfamily Cobitinae in older literature).
