Cobitis takenoi is a small, coldwater spined loach known from a single river system on Honshu, Japan — the Noda River in the Tango district of Kyoto prefecture. First recognized in 2010 as the "Tango tetraploid form" and formally described only in 2016, it is one of the aquarium hobby's newest true loaches and, with a native range confined to one small waterway, one of its most vulnerable. Like other members of Cobitidae it carries the erectile suborbital spine that gives the family its name, sifts sandy-mud river bottoms for small prey, and is a temperate species with no place in a heated tropical tank. It has essentially no aquarium breeding history, and its Critically Endangered status makes it a species to admire from photographs rather than to seek out for a tank.

Taxonomy & naming

Cobitis takenoi was described by Nakajima in 2016 from the Noda River, Tango district, Kyoto prefecture, on Honshu Island, Japan. Before its formal description it circulated in the Japanese ichthyological literature as the "Tango tetraploid form," recognized as genetically distinct as early as 2010 because, unusually for the family, it carries four sets of chromosomes rather than the usual two. That tetraploidy — later confirmed in the original description — set it apart from the diploid Cobitis populations around it and was a key part of the case for naming it as its own species rather than treating it as a local population of an existing one.

It belongs to the genus Cobitis within the family Cobitidae, the spined and pond loaches, a large Eurasian group that has been repeatedly reshuffled by molecular work over the past few decades (the Botia/Acanthophthalmus-style splits that reorganized other loach genera). Cobitis takenoi is not a synonym of any other species and has no widely used common name in English; it is generally referred to by its scientific name or informally as the Tango spined loach, after its type locality.

Morphology

This is a small, slender, laterally compressed loach in the classic Cobitis mold: an elongated body, a flattened underside suited to lying on sand, and barbels around a small, downturned mouth for probing the substrate. Reported maximum sizes are modest — around 2.5 in standard length in males and up to 3.5 in standard length in females, with females consistently the larger sex in this genus.

As a true member of Cobitidae, Cobitis takenoi carries the family's defining feature: an erectile spine tucked in a groove beneath each eye, which the fish can flick out for defense. Its scales are minute and deeply embedded, leaving the skin functionally close to naked — the same trait that makes loaches broadly sensitive to medications and slow to recover from skin damage. During the spring spawning season, males develop longitudinal dark stripes along the flanks, a seasonal marking pattern documented in the original description and typical of breeding-condition male Cobitis.

Habitat

Cobitis takenoi is a coldwater, temperate species known only from the Noda River system in the Tango district of Kyoto prefecture, Honshu — as tight an endemic range as exists among the world's loaches. It lives over sandy-mud bottoms in the middle and lower reaches of the river, the classic Cobitis habitat: slow-to-moderate flow over a soft, fine substrate rather than the boulder-and-current world of the hillstream loaches.

Because it is confined to a single Japanese river system, its entire habitat is exposed to whatever happens to that one waterway. River channelization and "improvement" works — concrete lining, dredging, and flow modification that destroy the natural sandy-mud bed — are the primary documented threat, since the species has nowhere else to retreat to if its home reach is altered.

Feeding

No feeding study specific to Cobitis takenoi has been located, but the genus is uniformly a benthic, sand-sifting omnivore, and this species is presumed to follow the same pattern documented in its Cobitis relatives: worms, insect larvae, small crustaceans, molluscs and organic detritus picked or sifted from a soft substrate. The barbels around the mouth are used to probe sand and mud for buried prey.

A soft sand or fine-gravel bed is what lets this feeding style happen at all — a hard-bottomed tank would deny the fish its natural foraging behavior entirely. Given the species' extreme rarity and conservation status, it is not established in aquarium culture, so no keeper feeding record exists to draw on beyond genus-level expectations.

Mating

Direct observations of courtship in Cobitis takenoi are not documented in the available literature, but the species shows the seasonal cue typical of temperate Cobitis: males develop pronounced longitudinal stripes during the spring spawning period, a visual signal of breeding readiness that is well known across the genus. Spawning in related temperate Cobitis species is tied to rising spring temperatures and seasonal water-level changes rather than a year-round cycle.

With the species restricted to one small river and under active conservation concern, there has been no reported attempt to study its mating behavior in captivity, and none of the cache's sources describe pairing, courtship displays or spawning triggers specific to this fish.

Breeding

Cobitis takenoi is an egg-scatterer with no parental care, the standard reproductive mode for the genus: ripe fish release adhesive eggs among vegetation or fine substrate, typically in spring, and the adults take no further part. Some temperate Cobitidae — European spined loaches and the dojo/weather loach Misgurnus among them — have been pond- or tank-spawned by hobbyists and researchers, but Cobitis takenoi is not one of them; no aquarium breeding has been documented for this species as far as available sources indicate.

Given its Critically Endangered status and single-river range, any future breeding work is far more likely to happen as a conservation program tied to a Japanese institution than as home-aquarium propagation. There is nothing in the record to suggest hobbyist spawning has ever been achieved, and the honest expectation for a keeper is that this species will not breed in a home tank.

In the aquarium

Cobitis takenoi is not an aquarium fish in any real sense — it is a Critically Endangered, single-river endemic subject to legal protection concerns and illegal collection pressure in its native Japan, and it is not established in the trade. Anyone encountering it in a hobbyist context should treat that as a red flag rather than an opportunity.

Were it ever to be kept, the requirements would follow directly from its biology: this is a coldwater to cool-temperate species and should never be treated as a tropical fish or housed in a heated community tank. It would need a soft sand or fine substrate to sift and burrow in, gentle to moderate flow, and — like all Cobitidae — careful, reduced-strength medication given its near-scaleless, medication-sensitive skin. In practice, the responsible position is simply not to seek this species out; its future lies with habitat protection in Japan, not with the aquarium trade.

Conservation

Cobitis takenoi is listed as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List, assessed in 2017. It is known only from the Noda River system in the Tango district of Kyoto prefecture, Honshu — a single small river, which makes the entire species vulnerable to any one adverse event or sustained habitat change in that waterway.

The principal documented threats are river "improvement" works — channelization, dredging and bank modification that destroy the sandy-mud bottoms the species depends on — and illegal collection for the ornamental trade, which the original description specifically flagged as a pressure on this newly recognized, highly range-restricted species. With no other known population to fall back on, habitat protection in its single home river is the entire conservation picture for this fish.
