Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis trichonica was described by the Greek ichthyologist Anastasios Stephanidis in 1974, its species name drawn directly from Lake Trichonis (Trichonida), the type locality and the water body most strongly associated with the species. It belongs to the family Cobitidae, the true spined and pond loaches, and sits within the genus Cobitis, the temperate Eurasian loaches that give the family its name.
According to the ETYFish Project's treatment of Cobitidae, C. trichonica is placed in the subgenus Bicanestrinia alongside several other Greek-endemic spined loaches — C. hellenica, C. meridionalis and C. arachthosensis — a cluster of narrowly distributed species that illustrates how finely subdivided the Cobitis radiation has become across the Balkans and Anatolia. The Catalog of Fishes remains the authority for the valid combination, and the species is consistently treated as Cobitis trichonica with no history of generic reassignment in the sources consulted here.
Morphology
Like all members of Cobitidae, Cobitis trichonica carries an erectile suborbital spine — a small, hinged spine tucked in a groove beneath the eye that the fish can flick out defensively — and near-scaleless, delicate skin, a combination that makes true loaches sensitive to rough handling and to medication. It is a slender, elongated fish reaching a modest maximum length of about 4 in, in keeping with the generally small size of the Cobitis genus.
As a benthic, sand-associated loach it shows the classic Cobitis body plan: a low-slung, laterally compressed shape suited to hugging or burrowing into soft substrate, with barbels around the mouth for probing the bottom. The genus Cobitis as a whole is characteristic of cool-water regions, with congeners such as C. taenia occurring naturally in the range of roughly 57–64 °F. Lake Trichonis and its neighbouring waters sit in a temperate Mediterranean climate with seasonal variation, and the species' spring spawning window reflects a cold-to-cool annual cycle rather than a stable tropical one. Several of these waters are recognised as Natura 2000 sites under EU conservation law, underscoring how localised and specific the species' habitat requirements are.
Feeding
As a Cobitidae bottom-dweller, Cobitis trichonica is a sand- and substrate-sifting benthic omnivore, in keeping with the feeding style typical of the genus: worms, small insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and detritus picked or sifted from a soft lake or stream bed. Breeding

Both sources agree on the core threat: water abstraction from its lake and river habitat in the Acheloos drainage. As a short-lived, narrowly endemic species confined to this one river system in west-central Greece, C. trichonica has essentially no buffer against habitat loss elsewhere — its entire population depends on the ecological health of Lake Trichonis and its immediately connected waters.
