Taxonomy & naming
Cobitis ylengensis was described by the Vietnamese ichthyologist S. V. Ngô in 2003, placed from the outset in the genus Cobitis within the family Cobitidae — the spined loaches, the family that gives its old common name to the whole suborbital-spine-bearing lineage of true loaches. The species epithet ylengensis refers to its type locality, the stream at Yleng in Bai Dinh, Dan Hoa town, Minh Hoa district, Quang Bình Province, in central Vietnam.
The genus Cobitis is large and taxonomically active, spanning both temperate European species such as the well-studied Cobitis taenia and a scatter of poorly known Southeast Asian species like this one. The Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid combination, and it continues to list this species as Cobitis ylengensis; no reclassification into another genus is recorded, so the original combination stands unchanged here.
Morphology
As a member of Cobitidae, Cobitis ylengensis is presumed to share the family's defining anatomy: an elongated, laterally compressed body built for a life spent close to the substrate, and an erectile spine hidden in a groove beneath each eye that the fish can flick out in defence or when handled. The skin carries only small, deeply embedded scales, leaving it functionally near-naked — a trait shared across the family with real consequences for medication sensitivity.
Beyond that family-level picture, no published description of colour pattern, fin structure or precise adult size for Cobitis ylengensis is available in the sources consulted. FishBase records no confirmed maximum length or size-at-maturity figures for the species. Given the modest size typical of Cobitis species generally, it is likely a small loach, but a specific figure cannot be stated without fabricating one; this is a case where the honest answer is that the data are sparse.

The species is known only from its type locality — a stream at Yleng, in the Bai Dinh area of Dan Hoa town, Minh Hoa district, Quang Bình Province, in central Vietnam. No published habitat description covers substrate, flow, vegetation or water chemistry at the type locality, and no additional collection sites have been reported since the original description. As a Cobitis species from a small Vietnamese stream system, it likely lives over sand or fine sediment in flowing water, in keeping with the sand-sifting habits typical of the genus, but this inference is not backed by field data in the available sources and should be read as reasonable extrapolation rather than a documented fact.
Feeding

Tropical Cobitidae from Southeast Asia, by contrast, generally have not been bred by hobbyists, and this pattern almost certainly extends to Cobitis ylengensis: it is a tropical stream species with no aquarium presence and no recorded spawning.
The honest statement is that this species is essentially unknown in cultivation and has no documented breeding record of any kind. Any description of its reproductive mode beyond the general egg-scattering habit typical of Cobitidae would be speculation rather than fact.

Cobitis ylengensis has no established presence in the aquarium hobby. Were a keeper to encounter true wild-collected material, the general precautions that apply across Cobitidae would still be sound: a soft, sand-based substrate for natural sifting behaviour, and caution with medications given the near-scaleless skin typical of the family, which tends to make spined loaches sensitive to copper-based treatments and full-strength doses. Specific temperature, pH or tank-size guidance cannot responsibly be given for this species, since none has been recorded.
Conservation
Cobitis ylengensis is listed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient, assessed in 2012. This reflects a genuine scarcity of research rather than any specific finding of stability or decline: the species is known only from its original description and type locality in Quang Bình Province, and no follow-up population surveys appear to have been published.
As a narrow-range stream endemic restricted to a single documented locality in central Vietnam, it would be vulnerable to any habitat disturbance in that specific catchment, but without population data or repeat surveys, no threat status stronger than Data Deficient can honestly be assigned. There is no indication in the available sources that the species enters the aquarium trade, so trade pressure is not a documented concern for it.
