Pangio longimanus is a miniature eel-like loach described from central Laos, one of the more obscure members of the large and species-rich genus Pangio — the kuhli loaches of Southeast Asia. It was formally named by Ralf Britz and Maurice Kottelat in 2010 from a type locality in central Laos, and it remains poorly known: its maximum size has not been recorded, most of its life-history is undocumented, and it has received a Data Deficient assessment from the IUCN. Like all kuhlis it is a scaleless, nocturnal, substrate-dwelling burrower that spends its days concealed in leaf litter or fine sand and emerges after dark to sift the bottom for small invertebrates. It is rarely kept in the hobby and almost never appears by name in trade, but its care requirements mirror those of its better-known congeners — fine soft sand, soft acidic water, dense cover, and the company of its own kind.

Taxonomy & naming

Pangio longimanus was described by Ralf Britz and Maurice Kottelat in a 2010 paper in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters. The genus Pangio, first erected by Blyth in 1860, holds the kuhli loaches — a group of slender, eel-like cobitid loaches distributed across South and Southeast Asia from India east through the Malay Peninsula and across Sundaland into the Philippine and Indonesian archipelagos. The species epithet longimanus (Latin: 'long-handed') refers to a morphological feature of the pectoral fins. GBIF and FishBase list the authority as Britz & Kottelat with a 2009 publication date for the underlying paper volume (Ichthyol. Explor. Freshwat. 20(4):371–376), though the official nomenclatural record cites 2010.

Pangio belongs to the family Cobitidae — the true loaches — within the superfamily Cobitoidea. The genus has undergone considerable taxonomic activity since the late 20th century: the long-familiar aquarium species Acantophthalmus kuhlii was reclassified into Pangio by Kottelat and colleagues, and many Southeast Asian species formerly placed in broad genera have been reassigned. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for valid names. Pangio longimanus does not appear to have acquired a standardised trade name.

Morphology

As with all members of its genus, Pangio longimanus is a small, extremely elongate, eel-like loach with a rounded body and a small, subterminal mouth bearing several pairs of barbels used to sense the substrate. The body is covered in minute, deeply embedded scales that give the skin a smooth, nearly naked appearance — a feature shared across the genus and one of considerable practical importance for the keeper. Kuhli loaches carry a small, erectile suborbital spine (the bifid rostral spine characteristic of Cobitidae) that can lock erect as a defensive mechanism and can snag fine-mesh nets. Exact maximum size for P. longimanus has not been reliably recorded, but closely related Pangio species in the same body-plan range from roughly 3–4.5 in standard length; FishBase lists size data as unknown for this species.

The pectoral fins, for which the species epithet was coined, are reportedly longer relative to body length than in some congeners. Ground coloration and pattern have not been described in detail in available sources. The general kuhli body form — laterally compressed toward the tail, arched dorsal profile, blunt snout — is expected here.

Habitat

The type locality of Pangio longimanus is in central Laos. Distribution data beyond the type locality is sparse; FishBase lists Asia — Laos as the range. By analogy with other Pangio species from mainland Indochina, the species likely inhabits shallow, slow-moving or still forest streams, swampy backwaters, and peat-influenced lowland waters where the bottom is soft organic mud or fine sand covered with leaf litter and submerged wood. The water in such habitats is typically warm, very soft, extremely low in dissolved minerals, and mildly to strongly acidic, often with negligible hardness. Light penetration is reduced by the forest canopy and by tannin staining.

Congeners studied in detail — for example Pangio oblonga from the Malay Peninsula — occupy exactly this niche: shallow, calm, heavily shaded waters over soft substrates with leaf litter, dissolved oxygen on the lower side, and almost no measurable mineral content. P. longimanus is expected to share these preferences. It is a warm-water tropical fish, not a coolwater or pond species.

Feeding

Pangio longimanus is a micro-omnivore and substrate-sifter, as are all kuhli loaches. In the wild, members of this genus work the soft bottom at night, using their sensitive barbels to locate small invertebrates — worm larvae, tiny crustaceans, insect larvae and other small organisms — that live in or on the sediment. They take detritus and plant matter incidentally. They are not surface feeders and rarely compete effectively for food offered at the water's surface or mid-column.

In aquarium practice this habit has a critical implication: kuhli loaches are easily underfed in a community tank where food is consumed by faster, daytime-active species before it ever reaches the bottom. The effective approach is to provide dense sinking foods — fine sinking pellets, frozen bloodworm, frozen Daphnia, live or frozen Artemia, microworms — timed to after lights-out when the fish emerge to forage. Broadly mixing sinking foods and live or frozen small invertebrates keeps them in good condition. An underfed kuhli loach is a slow, invisible decline.

Mating

Nothing specific has been published on the mating behaviour of Pangio longimanus, and detailed observations from closely related Pangio species in home aquaria are also limited. In other Pangio species, sexing is not straightforward: mature females are typically broader-bodied, especially around the abdomen when in spawning condition, and the ovaries may be faintly visible through the body wall in very ripe individuals. Outside of condition, males and females look alike and routine visual sexing is unreliable.

In the few accidental or deliberate Pangio spawnings reported by hobbyists, no courtship ritual has been reliably described. The general picture for the genus is of egg-scattering behaviour associated with dense floating plant growth, with no pair bond, no territorial defence, and no predictable triggering cue. In the wild, seasonal flooding and associated changes in temperature, photoperiod and water chemistry likely act as spawning stimuli.

Breeding

Pangio longimanus has not been bred in the aquarium. More broadly, kuhli loaches as a group are very rarely bred in home tanks: the most commonly cited account describes an unplanned spawning in which greenish, slightly adhesive eggs were scattered among the roots of floating plants, with no parental involvement and no consistent method for repeating the event. The trade in Pangio species is largely or entirely supported by wild-collected fish.

For P. longimanus specifically — a species not yet established in the hobby in any numbers — breeding records do not exist. The honest picture is that this is an egg-scattering species with no parental care, that the cues which trigger spawning in the wild are poorly understood for the genus as a whole, that verified home spawnings of kuhli loaches are accidental and rare, and that a keeper should not expect to breed this fish. If ever attempted, the recommended approach for congeners involves dense floating vegetation, very soft acidic water, cooler water changes to simulate a rainy-season trigger, and removing eggs from adults to prevent predation.

In the aquarium

Pangio longimanus is not an established aquarium fish and is unlikely to be found by name in the trade. It may occasionally enter shipments of mixed Pangio species from Laos or the broader Indochina region. Its husbandry requirements match those of other Pangio species closely: fine, soft sand is not optional — kuhlis burrow, and sharp gravel or coarse substrate damages the skin and barbels over time. The tank should be densely planted, furnished with smooth wood, leaf litter (dried Indian almond or catappa leaves work well), and clay tubes or smooth rocks that create refuge; exposed open-water conditions stress this genus significantly. A tight-fitting lid is essential, as all kuhli loaches are capable of squeezing through remarkably small gaps.

Keep a group of at least five individuals: kuhlis are social and settle better, feed more reliably, and are more active in the daytime with conspecifics present. Water should be warm (roughly 75–82 °F), very soft and acidic (pH 5.5–6.5 as a target, though some tolerance up to neutral), and well-filtered but with minimal turbulent flow. Being near-scaleless, Pangio species absorb medications readily and are sensitive to copper-based treatments and to full-strength doses of most chemical medications — use only half-doses and the gentlest available products if treatment is ever required. They are often among the first fish in a tank to develop ich, despite (or because of) their sensitivity. Feed sinking foods at lights-out for best results.

Conservation

Pangio longimanus was assessed as Data Deficient by the IUCN in 2011. A Data Deficient listing means that insufficient information was available to make a direct or indirect assessment of extinction risk — not that the species is common, but that the data needed to judge its status had not been gathered. Given that it is known only from a type locality in central Laos and has attracted minimal research or commercial collection, this assessment is unsurprising.

The broader context for freshwater fish of mainland Indochina — including central Laos — involves ongoing habitat pressures: dam construction on the Mekong and its tributaries, watershed deforestation, agricultural drainage and water diversion, and sedimentation of the shallow, soft-bottomed forest streams that Pangio species depend on. For a range-restricted species known from limited localities, these pressures are a real concern even in the absence of formal trade data. As the aquarium trade does not appear to collect P. longimanus specifically, trade pressure is not currently an identified threat, but wild-collection of Pangio species for the hobby is widespread across the genus and warrants monitoring.
