Cyclocheilichthys sinensis is a moderately large cyprinid barb described by Pieter Bleeker in 1879 from southern China — the only member of the otherwise predominantly Southeast Asian genus Cyclocheilichthys recorded from Chinese waters. It grows to around 12.5 in in standard length, placing it among the larger barbs of its region, yet it remains one of the least-studied species in the genus and is assessed as Data Deficient on China's official red list of vertebrates. Its Chinese common name, 圆唇鱼 (yuánchún yú), translates directly as "round-lip fish", echoing the Greek etymology of its scientific name.

Taxonomy & naming

Cyclocheilichthys sinensis was described by Pieter Bleeker in 1879 and placed in the genus Cyclocheilichthys, which Bleeker had erected on the basis of the distinctive fleshy, round or plicate lips that characterise species in the group. The genus name comes from the Greek kyklos (round), cheilos (lip), and ichthys (fish) — a direct reference to that lip morphology. The specific epithet sinensis is the Latinised form of "Chinese", indicating the species' origin in China, and is one of the few epithets that distinguishes this species geographically from its Southeast Asian congeners.

The genus Cyclocheilichthys has long sat within the family Cyprinidae (order Cypriniformes) and has not undergone the genus-level splitting that affected many smaller Asian barbs under the Pethiyagoda et al. (2012) revision. That revision mainly redistributed species formerly lumped under the broad catch-all Puntius into smaller genera such as Puntigrus, Pethia, Dawkinsia and Systomus; Cyclocheilichthys itself was not affected and retains its original circumscription. The Catalog of Fishes records the current valid combination as Cyclocheilichthys sinensis Bleeker, 1879.

Data on C. sinensis in the primary ichthyological literature are sparse. Most published work on the genus focuses on Southeast Asian species such as C. armatus and C. janthochir; C. sinensis is poorly represented in museum collections and field surveys, which is reflected in its Data Deficient status.

Morphology

Cyclocheilichthys sinensis is a large barb, reaching a maximum of 12.5 in in standard length according to FishBase — a size that places it well above the small ornamental barbs familiar to most aquarists and firmly in the category of river cyprinids more suited to large display or public aquaria. The genus is defined by its characteristically fleshy, rounded or plicate lips, and this feature is presumed to be present in C. sinensis as in other congeners.

Beyond size and the generic lip character, detailed morphometric or colour descriptions specific to C. sinensis are lacking in the accessible literature. Related Southeast Asian Cyclocheilichthys species are typically elongate, somewhat fusiform cyprinids with a subterminal mouth adapted for browsing over substrates, and C. sinensis is expected to follow the same basic body plan. FishBase records the species as benthopelagic in habit, suggesting it occupies both the lower water column and the substrate surface.

Sexual dimorphism has not been formally described for this species. In other large Cyclocheilichthys, females become noticeably deeper-bodied when gravid, but detailed comparative data for C. sinensis are not available.

Habitat

Cyclocheilichthys sinensis is recorded from freshwater bodies in southern China, making it the only representative of an otherwise Southeast Asian genus in Chinese territory. FishBase characterises the species as subtropical and benthopelagic, implying a preference for the lower water column of rivers or larger streams — a pattern consistent with the genus elsewhere, where species typically occupy moderate to fast-flowing rivers, tributaries and floodplain channels in tropical and subtropical lowlands.

Congreners in Southeast Asia — notably C. armatus and C. janthochir — inhabit a range of habitats from large lowland rivers to blackwater streams and peat swamps, often with soft to moderately hard, neutral to mildly acidic water. For C. sinensis in subtropical southern China, conditions are likely somewhat cooler and possibly harder than those of equatorial Sundaland; however, precise field measurements of water chemistry from the species' natural localities have not been published in accessible sources.

FishBase records minimum population doubling time for the species at 1.4–4.4 years, placing it in the medium-resilience category — neither especially robust nor especially vulnerable from a population-dynamics standpoint.

Feeding

No published diet studies specific to Cyclocheilichthys sinensis are available. The genus name's reference to rounded, fleshy lips is functionally significant: in other Cyclocheilichthys species, the plicate lip structure is associated with scraping algae, biofilm, and fine organic matter from rocky or sandy substrates, and with picking up small invertebrates from the benthos.

By analogy with congeners and with large cyprinids of similar morphology and habitat, C. sinensis is likely an omnivorous benthic feeder taking algae, detritus, aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates. Its benthopelagic classification on FishBase is consistent with foraging across both the substrate surface and the lower water column. Data on its specific diet in the wild remain unpublished.

Mating

Like all barbs, Cyclocheilichthys sinensis is an egg-scattering, non-guarding spawner. No specific observations of courtship or spawning behaviour in this species have been published, but the reproductive mode is uniform across the barb lineage: a ripe male pursues a gravid female through open water or over the substrate, and eggs and milt are released together without the formation of a nest, pair bond, or territory of any duration.

In large river cyprinids of similar size and subtropical habit, spawning is often seasonal and linked to water temperature or seasonal flooding events, with adults undertaking short migrations toward gravel shoals or flooded margins to spawn. Whether C. sinensis shows such migratory behaviour is not documented. No parental care occurs at any stage.

Breeding

Cyclocheilichthys sinensis has not been bred in captivity under documented conditions in the accessible hobbyist or scientific literature. By analogy with the biology of the genus and family, breeding would follow the standard barb pattern: adhesive or semi-buoyant eggs scattered over the substrate or among vegetation, with no parental involvement after spawning, and adults likely to consume eggs if confined with them.

For a species reaching 12.5 in SL, captive breeding would require very large aquaria or pond facilities. Population doubling time data suggest moderate fecundity relative to smaller barbs. Given the species' Data Deficient status and its apparent rarity in the wild, captive propagation has not been a focus of aquarium husbandry.

In the aquarium

Cyclocheilichthys sinensis is not an aquarium species in the conventional sense. At a maximum recorded size of 12.5 in SL, it is far too large for standard domestic aquaria and has essentially no presence in the ornamental fish trade. It would require very large, well-filtered systems with robust water movement to thrive in captivity, and its husbandry is untested in readily accessible hobbyist sources.

For the interested specialist, the congeners C. armatus and C. janthochir — smaller Southeast Asian relatives — have occasionally appeared in the trade and give some indication of the genus's requirements: large, well-oxygenated tanks, a varied diet with a significant invertebrate component, and stable, clean water. Whether these parameters translate directly to a subtropical Chinese species is unknown. C. sinensis is best regarded as a wild river fish of scientific interest rather than an aquarium subject.

Conservation

Cyclocheilichthys sinensis is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the Red List of China's Vertebrates (2015 edition), reflecting the lack of sufficient information on its population size, range extent, and habitat trends to assign a threat category. It is not evaluated on the global IUCN Red List.

The species is recorded only from southern China, placing it within a freshwater fauna that faces substantial and ongoing pressure from dam construction, water abstraction, river channelisation, agricultural runoff, and overfishing. Many large-bodied cyprinids in Chinese rivers have experienced significant population declines for these reasons. For C. sinensis specifically, the data are too sparse to quantify the trend, but the combination of large body size — which correlates with later maturity and lower intrinsic rate of increase in cyprinids — and an apparently restricted range within modified river systems warrants continued monitoring. The Data Deficient listing underscores the need for targeted field surveys to determine whether the species merits a threatened category.
