Taxonomy & naming
Nemacheilus masyae was described by the British-American ichthyologist Hugh McCormick Smith in 1933, with the type locality given as Ban Ta Yai on the Tadi stream near Nakhon Si Thammarat in Peninsular Thailand. The holotype is held at Kasetsart University (KUMF 714). The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) — the authority for valid names — lists the spelling masyae as correct under Article 31.1.1 of the ICZN Code, though the species is sometimes seen misspelled "masyai" in older hobby literature and some retail listings.
The species remains in Nemacheilus, one of dozens of genera carved out of the old, unwieldy catch-all "Noemacheilus"/"Nemacheilus" as the family Nemacheilidae was progressively split apart over the past several decades — a process that also produced Schistura, Barbatula, Traccatichthys and many other genera now recognized across Eurasia. A 2020 systematic review in Ichthyology & Herpetology re-examined variation across N. masyae's range and, in the process, described a smaller sister species, Nemacheilus zonatus, distinguishing the two on size and pattern differences.
Morphology
This is a slender, cylindrical loach typical of the Nemacheilidae body plan, with a light background colour overlaid by a bold, irregular pattern: 14–18 dark blotches running along the flanks and 12–17 saddle-like marks crossing the back, a distinct black spot at the point where the lateral line ends near the tail base, and another black spot at the front of the dorsal fin. The 2020 systematic review recorded specimens up to about 2.5 in standard length, noticeably larger than its newly described sister species N. zonatus (around 1 in SL); other sources put the maximum size near 5.5 in, though most wild and aquarium individuals are considerably smaller, in the 2.5–3 in range.
Like other members of the family, N. masyae carries the small erectile suborbital spine typical of many loaches and has fine, deeply embedded scales rather than the fully naked skin of some botiids — but its skin is still thin enough that it shares the family's general sensitivity to harsh medication. Precise dimorphism has not been documented for this species.
Habitat
Nemacheilus masyae is native to Peninsular Thailand and western Malaysia, recorded from the Mae Klong and Chao Phraya basins and neighbouring drainages, with likely presence in Mekong tributaries as well. It occupies flowing freshwater streams and river systems — forest streams and larger river channels alike — over a variety of substrates including mud, sand, rock and water-worn boulders, and is found in both clear, tannin-stained blackwater channels and more turbid stretches.
It is a benthopelagic stream fish of tropical lowland and foothill Southeast Asia, wanting flowing, well-oxygenated water rather than the still conditions often pictured for loaches. Reported temperatures run 73–79 °F with a pH of about 6.0–7.5 and moderate hardness, placing it in warm-temperate-to-tropical flowing water — distinctly cooler and faster than the classic still, soft blackwater setup, and a long way from the cold, high-altitude streams favoured by Himalayan Triplophysa.
Feeding
N. masyae is an omnivorous micro-predator, foraging over the streambed for small insects, worms, crustaceans and zooplankton rather than grazing biofilm in the manner of hillstream loaches. In the aquarium it takes small live and frozen foods readily — Daphnia, Artemia and bloodworm are all reported to work well — alongside sinking prepared foods; like many bottom-feeding loaches it may show little interest in flake left to float at the surface.
Feeding should be aimed at the bottom, ideally after lights-out or with cover nearby, since this is a fish that forages actively over the substrate rather than competing at the surface.
Mating
No sexual dimorphism has been documented for Nemacheilus masyae in the sources available, and no courtship or spawning behaviour has been recorded either in the wild or in captivity. As with the great majority of Nemacheilidae, the species' reproductive biology is essentially unstudied — a common situation for small stream endemics that receive occasional taxonomic and distributional survey attention but little sustained life-history research.
Breeding
Breeding has not been recorded in the aquarium for this species. Based on the general pattern for stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae), N. masyae is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel and among stones in flowing water, with no parental care — the same strategy seen across the family, in contrast to the cave-guarding behaviour of some gobies or the mouthbrooding of some cichlids, neither of which applies to loaches. Seriously Fish explicitly notes breeding as unrecorded in captivity for this species, and the honest picture is that, like most Nemacheilidae, it is essentially never spawned by hobbyists.
In the aquarium
Nemacheilus masyae is a modest-sized, peaceable stream loach suited to a species or community setup built around moving water. Seriously Fish recommends keeping it in groups of four or more, noting it is social and peaceful toward its own kind; a tank of at least 60×12 in with filtration turning over the water four to five times per volume gives the current the species is adapted to. Substrate should mix sand, fine gravel and water-worn rocks or boulders to mimic its variable natural streambed, with good oxygenation throughout.
As with other members of Nemacheilidae, its fine scales make it sensitive to copper and to full-strength doses of many medications, so cautious, reduced dosing is the safer approach if treatment is needed. Being a genuine flowing-water specialist, it does poorly in still, sluggish tanks — strong circulation and clean, well-oxygenated water matter more for this species than for many other small community fish.
Conservation
Nemacheilus masyae is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern (2020), reflecting its relatively wide distribution across multiple river basins in Peninsular Thailand and western Malaysia and the absence of documented major threats. As with many small Southeast Asian stream fish, more localized population trends are not closely monitored, and habitat pressures common across the region — waterway modification, sedimentation and agricultural runoff — are the background risks to watch even for a species currently rated of low concern.
