Taxonomy & naming
Nemacheilus papillosus was described by Alessandro Perugia in 1893, placing the parentheses around his name to show it has since been reassigned from its original genus. It was redescribed by Tan & Kottelat in 2009, and FishBase lists the working name as "Nemacheilus papillos" in that more recent treatment — a variant spelling of the same species. The genus Nemacheilus sits within Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loach family, the largest and most species-rich family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, whose Southeast Asian and South Asian genera have been repeatedly split and reshuffled (much of the old Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus complex has since been redistributed into genera such as Schistura, Barbatula and Triplophysa) as the Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, keeps pace with the underlying revisions.
FishBase records the species as species inquirenda — a designation meaning its taxonomic identity and validity remain unsettled, likely because the original description and subsequent material have not been enough to firmly anchor it against related Sumatran stream loaches. That uncertainty is itself useful information: it signals a genuinely data-sparse species rather than a well-characterized one, and any claims about its biology should be read with that caveat in mind.
