Taxonomy & naming
Nemacheilus pezidion was described by Maurice Kottelat in 2022, in a Zootaxa paper covering stone loaches of the Xe Kong watershed in the Mekong basin. It sits within Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, spread across most of Eurasia and still being actively split and resolved by taxonomists. Before its description, specimens of this species had been identified as Nemacheilus longistriatus, a similar-looking species from elsewhere in the Mekong system; comparison showed consistent differences in stripe and saddle pattern and in male secondary sexual characters, and it was split out as new.
The genus Nemacheilus has been heavily reshuffled over the past few decades, with many species once placed here now moved into Schistura, Physoschistura, Barbatula, Triplophysa and other segregate genera as the family gets worked through region by region. N. pezidion currently stands in Nemacheilus per its original description and the Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority for valid names in this group; this article keeps that combination and does not attempt to reassign it.
Morphology
N. pezidion is a small, elongate stone loach, built like most of its genus: a slim, subcylindrical body, a pointed snout with barbels for probing the substrate, and paired fins set low on the body. Its defining field mark, and the source of its name, is a distinct black midlateral stripe running the length of the flank, paired with a middorsal row of 11 to 15 narrow dark saddles crossing the back — a combination that separates it cleanly from the similar N. longistriatus once the two are compared side by side.
As in many nemacheilids, the sexes differ in secondary characters visible in mature males: a globulous, tuberculate flap of skin below the eye (a modified suborbital region, distinct from the rigid erectile spine of the unrelated botiid loaches) and thickened anterior pectoral-fin rays bearing small tubercles, both used in courtship and possibly in male-to-male contact. Beyond the type series, published size and growth data are not yet available; like most small nemacheilids it should be assumed to stay compact, in the range of a few centimetres, but a confirmed maximum length has not been reported in the literature reviewed for this profile.
Habitat
The species is known from the type locality in the Xe Kong watershed, a tributary system of the Mekong River in Attapeu province, southern Laos, where it was collected over a mud-to-gravel bottom in moderate current. It belongs to a genus and family strongly tied to clear, flowing, well-oxygenated streams rather than still or blackwater habitats, and the available notes point to a similarly cool-to-moderate, oxygen-rich flowing-water setting.
No population or range data beyond the type watershed has been published, so N. pezidion should be treated as a narrow-range Mekong-basin endemic until further surveys say otherwise. As with many recently described stream loaches, its full distribution — and therefore its vulnerability to habitat change — is essentially unknown outside its type locality.
Feeding
No diet study exists yet for N. pezidion specifically. Its genus, however, is consistently characterised as micro-predatory: Nemacheilus species work the bottom of fast, clear streams for small invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny prey, using their barbels to feel out food buried in gravel and mud. There is no reason from its morphology or habitat to expect this species to differ from that pattern.
In the absence of specific data, the safest working assumption — consistent with its relatives — is a diet of small live and frozen invertebrate foods taken off the substrate, with little interest in flake or floating foods. Any aquarium feeding regime should follow that genus-wide pattern rather than assume otherwise.
Mating
Courtship itself has not been observed or described for N. pezidion. What is documented is the male's secondary sexual equipment: the tuberculate suborbital flap and the thickened, tubercle-bearing pectoral rays noted in the original description, both typical devices nemacheilid males use to grip or stimulate females during spawning. Beyond that anatomical evidence, no behavioural account of courtship or pairing has been published for this species.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented in the wild or in captivity for N. pezidion — this is a species known essentially from its type series, with no aquarium history. Based on its genus and family, the expected mode is an egg-scatterer over gravel and stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care, in line with how stone and brook loaches generally reproduce. It has not, to any known record, been bred in the aquarium, and given how recently it was described and how little else is known about it, that should be considered unlikely to happen soon. Any keeper reporting a spawning would be documenting something genuinely new.
In the aquarium
N. pezidion has no known aquarium-keeping history: it does not appear to be in the ornamental trade, and no husbandry notes exist beyond what can be inferred from its genus. Nemacheilus species generally do best in a setup that mirrors clear, cool-to-moderate flowing streams — good water movement, high oxygenation, a gravel-and-sand substrate, and clean, well-filtered water rather than the warm, still conditions suited to lowland tropical fish.
As with other small, largely scaleless stream loaches, gentle handling and cautious medication would be prudent if the species were ever kept — full-strength treatments and copper-based medications are best avoided or halved across the family. Given the total absence of trade or husbandry records, however, this section is necessarily inferential rather than a tested care guide; anyone encountering this species would effectively be pioneering its aquarium care.
Conservation
Nemacheilus pezidion has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List. Having been described only in 2022 and known only from its type locality in the Xe Kong watershed of southern Laos, it is a textbook case of a range-restricted stream endemic that conservation assessment simply has not caught up with yet — this profile records it as Not Evaluated rather than guessing at a category.
No data exist on population trend, threats, or trade pressure specific to this species. Its narrow known range in a single Mekong tributary watershed means that, in general terms, activities affecting that watershed — damming, sedimentation, deforestation or water extraction common across Mekong tributaries — would be the plausible risk factors for a fish like this, but none of that is documented for N. pezidion specifically, and no formal assessment currently exists.
