Taxonomy & naming
Nemacheilus stigmofasciatus was described by Arunachalam and Muralidharan in 2009 in the Journal of Threatened Taxa, part of a wave of new stone-loach descriptions from India's Western Ghats in the 2000s as ichthyologists surveyed the region's short, steep, biologically rich west-flowing streams. It sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, with well over 700 described species spread across Asia, the Middle East and parts of Europe.
The genus Nemacheilus has been heavily revised over the past two decades as the old, catch-all "Noemacheilus/Nemacheilus" concept was split apart; many species once placed here now sit in Schistura, Physoconger, Aborichthys and other genera erected on the strength of finer anatomical work. Nemacheilus stigmofasciatus retains its original combination, and the Catalog of Fishes is the authority for that placement. The species epithet stigmofasciatus references the fish's mottled banding pattern — a thin lateral-line stripe over a blotched body, which also gives the fish its working common name of "spot-band loach" among researchers, though it has no established trade name.
Morphology
This is a small fish even by stone-loach standards, reaching only about 1.5 in standard length. It has the typical elongate, cylindrical Nemacheilus body plan: a rounded head, a comparatively short snout (35.9–39.4% of head length) and notably large eyes (28.1–31.3% of head length) suited to a life spent reading a fast, clear-water bottom. The lateral line is incomplete, stopping short of the pelvic fin — a diagnostic detail used to separate it from close relatives. Body colour is a mottled, blotchy pattern broken by a thin stripe running along the flank.
Like other nemacheilids it lacks the erectile suborbital spine of the botiid loaches; instead it relies on cryptic colouration and its small size to avoid predators in fast water. Its skin carries the near-scaleless, exposed integument typical of the group, which matters for husbandry: these are fish sensitive to medications and water quality shifts even though almost none have ever been kept in aquaria long enough to test that in practice.
Habitat
Nemacheilus stigmofasciatus is known only from its type locality: the Seethanathi River at Thuttinjet, Karnataka, India, at roughly 653 ft elevation in the Western Ghats. This is a small, west-flowing hill stream broken by cascades and waterfalls, its bed dominated by pebbles and boulders with only a scattering — about 5% — of gravel and sand. The water there is highly oxygenated, clear and fast, chemically very soft and dilute: recorded readings give a pH of 6.5–7.5, general hardness of about 2 (very soft), carbonate hardness of about 2 (very low) and total dissolved solids of around 40 ppm, indicating clean, nutrient-poor mountain-stream water.
Temperature swings with the seasons rather than sitting at a constant tropical warmth: monsoon-season readings run a cool 68–73 °F, while the dry season can climb toward 90 °F. This is a fish of a genuinely narrow, specific niche — a single fast, clear, boulder-strewn Western Ghats stream — rather than a widespread lowland or still-water species, and as a single-locality endemic it is inherently vulnerable to anything that changes that one stream.
Feeding
As a benthopelagic member of Nemacheilus, this species is a micro-predator that forages over the streambed, taking small insect larvae, worms, crustaceans and zooplankton, with published trophic-level estimates (around 2.8) pointing to a diet with a strong animal bias alongside some incidental plant and detrital material. This fits the wider pattern for stone loaches: constant grazing and picking across a stony, biofilm-covered bottom in fast, clean water rather than foraging in silt or leaf litter.
No aquarium feeding record exists for this species specifically, so any husbandry guidance has to be extrapolated cautiously from the genus. Small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, chopped invertebrates — would be the expected staples for a fish built to hunt small prey in swift water; there is no evidence it would readily take flake.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Nemacheilus stigmofasciatus. Data on reproduction in this species is sparse to non-existent — it is known essentially from its original taxonomic description and subsequent distribution records, not from life-history study. Sexual dimorphism has not been described.
Breeding
There is no record of this species being bred in captivity, and no detailed account of its wild spawning either. The safest and most honest statement, consistent with its family, is that stone and brook loaches of this kind are egg-scatterers over gravel and stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care — but for Nemacheilus stigmofasciatus specifically, breeding data is sparse, and nothing beyond that general family pattern can be stated with confidence. This is not a fish that has ever entered the aquarium breeding literature.
In the aquarium
Nemacheilus stigmofasciatus is essentially unknown in the hobby — it is a recently described, single-locality Western Ghats endemic with no established trade presence, and any husbandry notes here are necessarily inferred from its wild habitat and its close nemacheilid relatives rather than from lived aquarist experience. Were it ever kept, its native stream points clearly to the requirements: cool-to-moderate, very soft, clean, highly oxygenated water with strong flow, a bottom of pebbles and boulders rather than sand or mud, and a mature biofilm surface to graze and hunt across. A still, warm, standard community tank would be the wrong environment entirely.
As with other scaleless, thin-skinned loaches, caution with medications and copper-based treatments would be prudent. Given its tiny size, narrow range and complete absence from the trade, this is a species to know about rather than one to expect to keep — collecting pressure on a single-stream endemic like this would carry outsized risk.
Conservation
Nemacheilus stigmofasciatus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient (2022). It is known from a single locality — the Seethanathi River at Thuttinjet, Karnataka — which makes it inherently vulnerable to any localised habitat change, even though the data needed to assign a threat category are currently lacking. As a narrow, single-stream endemic of the Western Ghats, a global biodiversity hotspot under heavy pressure from deforestation, water abstraction and stream modification, its long-term status is worth monitoring even in the absence of a full assessment. There is no evidence of any aquarium-trade collecting pressure on this species; its conservation concerns, such as they are, are purely habitat-driven.
