Taxonomy & naming
Oxynoemacheilus angorae was described by the Austrian ichthyologist Franz Steindachner in 1897, hence the parentheses around his name marking a change of genus since the original description. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, and one that has been repeatedly reshuffled as the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart using both morphology and DNA. Oxynoemacheilus is one of the genera that resulted from that split, covering many of the small nemacheilid loaches of Anatolia, the Levant and the wider Middle East.
A 2022 taxonomic revision published in Zootaxa examined the "angorae group" in detail and confirmed Oxynoemacheilus angorae as endemic to western and central Anatolia, distinguishing it from related, more recently described species in the same species complex. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid combination; the species is not to be confused with other Anatolian Oxynoemacheilus described from neighbouring drainages. The name Oxynoemacheilus phoxinoides is treated as a synonym of this species in Eschmeyer's Catalog of Fishes.
Morphology
This is a small fish: FishBase records a maximum length of 3.5 in total length, with a reference specimen weighing under 6 grams. Like other nemacheilid stone loaches it has a slender, cylindrical body, a flattened belly suited to holding position on stream substrate, small barbels around the mouth for feeling out food, and reduced, deeply embedded scales rather than the more armoured look of the botiid loaches. Its skin is correspondingly sensitive — a point that matters for anyone handling or medicating this genus.
Detailed information on colour pattern variation and sexual differences is not covered in the sources at hand, and the species is described as adjusting its morphology somewhat to local stream conditions, consistent with the wider pattern of habitat-generalist nemacheilids across their range.
Habitat
Oxynoemacheilus angorae is endemic to west and central Anatolia in Turkey, recorded from streams draining to the Sea of Marmara, the Black Sea and the Bay of Antalya, as well as endorheic (closed) basins of the central Anatolian plateau, with a possible historical record from the island of Lesbos, Greece. A well-documented population lives in the Kızılırmak River basin's Kılıçözü Stream in Central Anatolia, the subject of a dedicated population study.
FishBase classifies it as a subtropical, benthopelagic species tolerant of both fresh and slightly brackish water, living at 57–72 °F with a pH around 7.0–7.5 and hardness up to 15 dH. This is cool, clear, well-oxygenated, moderately hard running water — the classic stone-loach stream environment — not the warm, soft, acidic water associated with many Southeast Asian loaches.
Feeding
FishBase places Oxynoemacheilus angorae at a trophic level of 2.8, consistent with a diet of detritus and small aquatic organisms. In practice this fits the typical nemacheilid pattern: a bottom-oriented micro-predator that picks invertebrates, insect larvae and organic material from gravel and stream sediment, supplementing this with detritus rather than actively hunting larger prey.
No aquarium-specific feeding data is available in the sources reviewed here. Based on the biology of the genus and family, a fish of this kind would be expected to take small sinking live and frozen foods readily and to largely ignore floating flake, but this should be treated as a reasonable inference from its wild diet rather than a documented aquarium account.
Mating
None of the sources reviewed document courtship or spawning behaviour for this species, and FishBase notes its maturity is unknown. This is common among small, regionally endemic nemacheilid loaches, which attract far less research and hobbyist attention than the large, colourful botiids of Southeast Asia.

Data on breeding is sparse to the point of absence for this species: no source consulted here reports a description of spawning, egg characteristics or fry-rearing, in the wild or in captivity. Consistent with the wider Nemacheilidae, the expected pattern is an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water with no parental care whatsoever.
There is no record of this species being deliberately bred in home aquaria, and given how rarely it appears in the trade at all, captive breeding reports would be exceptional rather than routine. The honest summary is that its reproductive biology is essentially undescribed and it should not be assumed to breed readily, or at all, under aquarium conditions.

Oxynoemacheilus angorae is not an established aquarium fish; it is a small regional endemic studied mainly by ichthyologists and rarely, if ever, offered in the ornamental trade. Anyone who does encounter it should treat it as a coldwater-to-subtropical stream species: FishBase's recorded range of 57–72 °F is well below the warm tropical temperatures suited to most popular aquarium fish, and a keeper should not default to a heated tropical setup. Strong water movement, high dissolved oxygen, a gravel or fine-stone substrate and excellent filtration would be needed to approximate its native riffle habitat.
As with other nemacheilid and stone loaches, the reduced scales and generally thin skin of this family mean any medication should be approached cautiously — half-doses of gentle treatments are the safer default for scaleless or near-scaleless loaches generally, though no species-specific disease sensitivity data exists for Oxynoemacheilus angorae itself. Tank size should be modest given the fish's small adult size (under 3.5 in), but there is no documented account of it being kept, so any husbandry recommendation here is necessarily drawn from the wider family rather than from direct experience with the species.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Oxynoemacheilus angorae as Least Concern in January 2013. FishBase notes medium population resilience, with a minimum population doubling time of 1.4 to 4.4 years, suggesting the species can recover reasonably well from disturbance.
As an Anatolian stream endemic, its long-term outlook is tied to the health of the specific Turkish drainages it inhabits — the Marmara, Black Sea and Bay of Antalya basins and central Anatolian endorheic streams such as the Kızılırmak system — which face the general pressures common to Turkish freshwater habitats, including water abstraction, damming and agricultural runoff. There is no evidence in the sources reviewed of population decline or trade-driven pressure; this is not a fish collected for the aquarium trade in any documented volume.
