Taxonomy & naming
Oxynoemacheilus araxensis was described by Petru Bănărescu and Theodor Nalbant in 1978, part of a wave of nemacheilid stone-loach descriptions from Anatolia and the Caucasus during that period. Its genus, Oxynoemacheilus, sits within the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, with hundreds of species split across genera such as Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and Paracobitis following the long-running breakup of the old, catch-all Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus.
The species epithet references the Araxes (Aras) River, the border river running through Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran and Turkey, but the fish is not confirmed from that drainage in the sources consulted here — its documented type locality is near Kandili in the upper Euphrates system of eastern Turkey. This kind of naming mismatch is common in older Anatolian nemacheilid descriptions, where regional river names were applied loosely; we note it rather than resolve it, since the Catalog of Fishes governs the valid combination and we have not seen a formal correction in the sources available. Morphology
This is a small, slender stone loach, reaching a maximum recorded size of only about 3 in standard length — modest even by the standards of a family full of small stream fish. FishBase notes it is distinguished from its congeners chiefly by a deeper caudal peduncle, a fine anatomical detail typical of the incremental characters used to separate Oxynoemacheilus species from one another. As with other nemacheilids, the skin is effectively naked — the scales are tiny and deeply embedded rather than forming an obvious armour — which matters for husbandry more than appearance.
