Oxynoemacheilus atili is a small stone loach known only from the Lake Beyşehir drainage and the Manavgat basin of western and central Anatolia, Turkey. Described in 2012 by Fahrettin Erk'akan, it belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest family of true loaches — the slim, bottom-hugging "stone" or "brook" loaches that make their living picking invertebrates off the beds of cool, clear, fast-flowing streams and spring-fed waters. It reaches only about 3.5 in, and like most of its relatives it is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade; almost everything published on it concerns its taxonomy, its narrow endemic range and its conservation status rather than its husbandry, which remains genuinely data-sparse.

Taxonomy & naming

Oxynoemacheilus atili was formally described by the Turkish ichthyologist Fahrettin Erk'akan in 2012, and the Catalog of Fishes — the standing authority for valid fish names — recognizes it as a valid species in the genus Oxynoemacheilus, family Nemacheilidae. The genus itself is a relatively recent split from the old, catch-all Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus complex that once absorbed most of Eurasia's stone loaches; Oxynoemacheilus now holds a large radiation of species native to Anatolia, the Levant and the wider Middle East.

The species epithet honours Ahmet Tuncay Atil. A subsequent Zootaxa revision of the closely related Oxynoemacheilus angorae species group has raised the possibility that O. atili may prove to be a synonym of O. eregliensis, but that later reassessment has not (as of the most recent Catalog of Fishes listing available here) displaced its status as a distinct, described species, and this article treats it as such, following the original 2012 description and the current catalog entry.

Morphology

This is a small, slender stone loach, reported to reach about 3.5 in in total length — modest even by the standards of Nemacheilidae, and smaller than many of its Anatolian relatives. FishBase's description notes an elongated body typical of the genus, with 10 dorsal soft rays and 8 anal soft rays; the fine details of its colour pattern and scale arrangement are what separate it from closely related congeners in the angorae group, which is otherwise a taxonomically tight and easily confused cluster of Anatolian stone loaches.

Like other nemacheilids, O. atili is a bottom-dwelling fish built for gripping and grazing along stream substrate rather than for open swimming, and — as in most stone and brook loaches — the skin carries very small, embedded scales, leaving it functionally near-scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to harsh chemical treatment. Beyond the diagnostic fin-ray counts and the general nemacheilid body plan, no further published morphological detail was found in the sources consulted for this profile.

Habitat

Oxynoemacheilus atili is endemic to a narrow slice of Turkey: the drainage of Lake Beyşehir in central Anatolia, plus the separate Manavgat basin that drains south to the Mediterranean. As a species with no established aquarium trade, its conservation pressures are not ornamental-collection driven; they are the broader threats common to small-range Anatolian freshwater endemics, such as water abstraction, pollution and habitat alteration in and around Lake Beyşehir. The taxonomic uncertainty noted above — the possibility that it may eventually be synonymized with O. eregliensis — is itself a reminder of how poorly resolved and understudied this whole regional radiation of stone loaches remains.
