Oxynoemacheilus arsaniasus is a small stone loach described in 2019 from the Murat River and upper Karasu (Muş) drainage of eastern Anatolia, part of the Euphrates system in Turkey. It belongs to the Oxynoemacheilus tigris species group within Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family and the one that holds the true "stone" or "brook" loaches — bold, near-scaleless micro-predators of cool, clear, fast-flowing streams. Like most of its Anatolian relatives it is known from a narrow home range and has never entered the aquarium trade, so much of its biology is inferred from better-studied congeners rather than direct observation.

Taxonomy & naming

Oxynoemacheilus arsaniasus was described in 2019 by Jörg Freyhof, Cüneyt Kaya, Davut Turan and Matthias Geiger, in a revision of the Oxynoemacheilus tigris species group published in Zootaxa. The description combined morphological comparison with molecular (COI) data to separate the region's stone loaches into distinct species, arsaniasus among them.

The genus Oxynoemacheilus sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, whose taxonomy has been reshuffled repeatedly as older, broad genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart. Many Anatolian and Middle Eastern populations once lumped together have, over the last two decades, been resolved into narrower genera including Oxynoemacheilus, Paracobitis and Barbatula. This species has not been subject to any further reclassification since its description and remains in Oxynoemacheilus.

Morphology

As a member of the Oxynoemacheilus tigris group, O. arsaniasus shows the family's characteristic build: a small, elongate, cylindrical body suited to holding position on the bottom in fast water. The original description notes a bold, irregularly-shaped black bar at the base of the caudal fin, an incomplete lateral line, and an essentially scaleless body — traits used to distinguish it from closely related congeners in the same river system.

Like other nemacheilids it carries an erectile suborbital spine, a small blade beneath the eye that can be flicked out, though this is far less prominent than the large spine of the botiid loaches. The near-total absence of scales — a hallmark of the family — leaves the skin exposed and is the key reason these fish are unusually sensitive to medication. Exact size for this species has not been separately measured; congeners in the tigris group and the broader genus typically run from about 1.5–4 in total length, so arsaniasus most likely falls in a similar 2–3 in range, but this remains an estimate rather than a documented figure.

Habitat

The species is known only from the Murat River and the upper Karasu (Muş) River, two linked headwater drainages of the Euphrates system in eastern Turkish Anatolia. This is classic stone-loach country: cool, clear, fast-flowing mountain stream water running over gravel and stone, well oxygenated and low in nutrients.

Turkish Anatolian streams of this type typically run in the range of roughly 50–64 °F, with neutral, oligotrophic chemistry (pH around 6.5–7.5). This is a coldwater-to-cool-temperate habitat, not a warm tropical one, and it is worth stressing because it is easy to default to "warm stream water" when writing up a stone loach — that would be wrong for this genus and this drainage.

Feeding

Oxynoemacheilus arsaniasus is a benthic micro-predator, foraging over the gravel and stones of its stream bed for small aquatic invertebrates: insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and similar prey typical of clean, fast-flowing water. This diet is inferred from the genus and family rather than documented specifically for this species, but it is a very consistent pattern across Nemacheilidae.

No aquarium feeding data exists for this species since it is not established in the hobby, but based on its relatives it would be expected to take small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, daphnia, small worms — readily, and to show little interest in dry flake.

Mating

No specific reproductive behaviour has been documented for Oxynoemacheilus arsaniasus; the species was described from morphological and molecular material, not from observations of live spawning. Data for this and most of its close relatives is sparse — many Oxynoemacheilus species are known only from a handful of streams and have never been studied in life.

Based on the pattern seen across stone and brook loaches generally, reproduction is presumed to be a simple, unpaired affair with no courtship display beyond the fish coming into breeding condition together in fast, well-oxygenated water — but this has not been confirmed for arsaniasus specifically.

Breeding

Stone and brook loaches of the family Nemacheilidae are egg-scatterers: ripe fish release eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of any kind afterward. There is no cave-guarding or mouthbrooding behaviour anywhere in this family — that pattern belongs to gobies and cichlids, not loaches.

For Oxynoemacheilus arsaniasus specifically, no captive or wild spawning has been documented; the species is rarely, if ever, bred in captivity, and data on its reproduction is sparse to nonexistent. The honest summary is: egg-scatterer over gravel in fast water, no parental care, essentially unknown in aquaria.

In the aquarium

Oxynoemacheilus arsaniasus is not established in the aquarium trade and no husbandry record for it could be found. It would require a specialist cool-water setup rather than a standard tropical community tank: cool, clean, fast-moving, highly oxygenated water over a gravel or stone substrate, mimicking the Anatolian mountain streams it comes from. A chiller or unheated setup in a cool room would likely be necessary to hold it at appropriate temperatures rather than the 75–82 °F typical of tropical tanks.

As with other nemacheilids, its near-scaleless skin means it would be expected to be sensitive to copper-based treatments and full-strength medications, warranting the same half-dose caution used with other scaleless loaches. Given how little is known about this species in captivity, anyone attempting to keep it should treat it as an experimental, conservation-minded undertaking rather than a routine aquarium fish.

Conservation

Oxynoemacheilus arsaniasus has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and is listed here as Not Evaluated. This is a common situation for small, narrow-range Oxynoemacheilus species described only in the last few years: many remain unassessed simply because the formal review process has not caught up with the taxonomy.

The species is known only from the Murat River and upper Karasu (Muş) drainage, a genuinely narrow range restricted to two linked river systems in eastern Turkey — the kind of restricted distribution that would typically warrant conservation attention once a full assessment is carried out. There is no evidence of aquarium-trade collection pressure on this species; it simply is not part of the trade.
