Taxonomy & naming
Oxynoemacheilus axylos was described in 2022 by Yaşar Yoğurtçuoğlu, Cüneyt Kaya and Jörg Freyhof in a Zootaxa revision of the Oxynoemacheilus angorae group, a paper that split out two new species from what had previously been treated as a single, more widely distributed O. angorae. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea and one that has been extensively reshuffled over the past two decades as the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were broken up into Oxynoemacheilus, Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and others. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid name, and it recognises Oxynoemacheilus axylos as a distinct species within that group.
The genus name Oxynoemacheilus combines Greek roots referring to a pointed or sharp form with the older genus name Noemachilus, itself derived from nema (thread) and cheilos (lip), a nod to the fine barbels around the mouth typical of these loaches. The species epithet axylos refers to Axylos, the ancient name for the treeless steppe region of Lycaonia that lay south of Lake Tatta — the classical name for what is today's Lake Tuz — placing the species firmly in its type locality by name. Because the description is so recent, older literature and any hobby material predating 2022 will not use this combination at all; there is no legacy synonym to untangle for this particular species.
Morphology
Oxynoemacheilus axylos is a small nemacheilid, reaching only around 3 in in standard length, with the slender, faintly compressed, bottom-hugging body typical of stone loaches. Its diagnostic features, drawn directly from the original description, are an almost truncate caudal fin, a notably stout caudal peduncle, and elevated dorsal and ventral adipose crests along the tail stock. Its flank pattern is the clearest field mark separating it from its closest relative: O. axylos shows a mottled ground colour or irregular, large, roundish blotches, whereas O. angorae carries a more regular longitudinal stripe pattern.
Like other members of its family it likely carries the erectile suborbital spine typical of Nemacheilidae, a small defensive spine folded into a groove beneath the eye that the fish can flick out — a feature shared across nearly all true loaches and one keepers should handle with care when netting any stone loach. Its skin, again typical of the family, is thinly or barely scaled, a trait that matters for how sensitive these fish are to medication. A genetic study accompanying the description found a diploid karyotype of 2n=50, made up of 34 biarmed and 16 monoarmed chromosomes, part of the evidence used to separate it from its relatives.
Habitat
The species is known only from the Lake Tuz basin in Central Anatolia, Turkey — a large, shallow, hypersaline endorheic lake with no outlet to the sea, fed by a ring of freshwater springs, rivers and streams that never reach open ocean. Oxynoemacheilus axylos has been recorded from the Cihanbeyli, Gölyazı, Melendiz and Samsam drainages that feed this basin, living in the fast-flowing, benthopelagic reaches of springs, rivers and streams rather than in the saline lake itself.
This places the species squarely in the cool-to-temperate, well-oxygenated, flowing fresh water typical of Anatolian stone loaches — a world away from a warm, still, blackwater aquarium. Because the Lake Tuz basin is endorheic and its feeder streams are geographically isolated from surrounding river systems, a species restricted to this basin has essentially nowhere else to go if any one of its home streams is degraded, which is worth bearing in mind even in the absence of a formal conservation assessment.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Oxynoemacheilus axylos has been published, but the original description places its estimated trophic level at 2.8 ± 0.3, consistent with a secondary consumer and micro-predator — the same ecological role played by essentially every other member of its family. Stone loaches of this kind forage over gravel and cobble in fast water, picking off small invertebrates, insect larvae and other benthic prey rather than grazing algae or browsing plants.
Without aquarium data specific to this species, the safest guidance follows its close relatives and its family generally: expect it to take small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp readily, to accept sinking pellets aimed at bottom-feeders, and to show little interest in flake that stays in the water column. Data for this exact species is sparse, so any feeding regime should be adapted by observation rather than assumed.
Mating
No description of courtship, spawning behaviour, or sexual dimorphism has been published for Oxynoemacheilus axylos, and the original species description is a taxonomic revision rather than a natural-history or breeding study. Data here is genuinely sparse, and nothing should be invented to fill the gap.
What can be said follows from its placement in the Oxynoemacheilus angorae group and the wider stone-loach family: these are egg-scattering fish with no known pair-bonding or courtship display comparable to substrate-spawning cichlids, and spawning in related species is generally tied to seasonal conditions in fast-flowing water rather than to a fixed, observable ritual.
Breeding
As with the great majority of stone and brook loaches, there is no record of Oxynoemacheilus axylos being bred in captivity, and nothing in the available sources describes its reproductive biology beyond its provisional placement as an egg-scatterer. The family pattern for Nemacheilidae is to scatter eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care given to eggs or fry afterward — and there is no reason from the current record to expect this species to differ.
Given that it was only described in 2022, is known from a handful of Anatolian drainages, and has apparently never entered the aquarium trade, it should be treated as effectively unbred in captivity. Breeding.mode here should be read as inferred from the family and genus rather than directly observed for this species.
In the aquarium
Oxynoemacheilus axylos has no established presence in the aquarium hobby, and nothing in the record documents anyone keeping it. Any care guidance is necessarily extrapolated from its biology and its close relatives rather than from direct experience with the species itself, and should be treated cautiously on that basis.
Were it ever to appear in the trade, its known morphology and habitat point toward the same care regime as other Anatolian and Central Asian stone loaches: cool-to-moderate, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over a gravel or cobble substrate, since it comes from spring-fed streams rather than warm, still lowland rivers. Its likely thin scalation, shared with the rest of Nemacheilidae, means any stone loach of this kind should be presumed sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally, warranting the same half-dose caution applied to other scaleless or near-scaleless loaches. At roughly 3 in it is a modest-sized fish, but tank sizing and social needs for this specific species are simply not documented.
Conservation
Oxynoemacheilus axylos has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. It was described only in 2022, and no subsequent Red List assessment has followed as of this writing.
Its restriction to a handful of spring-fed drainages in the endorheic Lake Tuz basin — an isolated system with no natural connection to other river networks — is the kind of range profile that often accompanies threatened status once a species is finally assessed, since local habitat degradation, water abstraction or pollution in any one of its home streams could affect a disproportionate share of the total population. Until a formal assessment exists, though, that risk remains an inference from its range rather than a documented decline, and it is presented as such rather than assigned a status the species has not actually received.
