Taxonomy & naming
Oxynoemacheilus banarescui was described by Giovanni Battista Delmastro in 1982, in a paper on new cobitid (loach) fishes from tributaries of the Black Sea in Asia Minor. It sits in the genus Oxynoemacheilus, one of several genera carved in recent decades out of the old, over-broad "Nemacheilus"/"Noemacheilus" wastebasket that used to hold most Eurasian stone loaches; Oxynoemacheilus now covers a large radiation of species across Anatolia, the Levant and the Caucasus. The species belongs to the O. bergianus species group, a cluster of closely similar Anatolian stone loaches that has been the subject of ongoing taxonomic revision as researchers work through their true diversity river system by river system.
The specific epithet banarescui honours Petre Mihai Bănărescu (1921–2009), the Romanian ichthyologist and naturalist affiliated with the Institute of Biology in Bucharest, whose work on Eurasian freshwater fish taxonomy and zoogeography underpins much of what is known about this region's stone loaches. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid combination; the species has not needed reclassification since its description and remains in Oxynoemacheilus.
Morphology
As with other Nemacheilidae, Oxynoemacheilus banarescui is a small, elongate, cylindrical fish adapted for holding position on the bed of fast-flowing streams. Documented size data for this exact species is sparse, but stone loaches in this genus typically run in the range of roughly 2.5–4.5 in standard length, and this species is expected to fall within that range rather than growing large.
True loaches in Nemacheilidae are near-scaleless or carry only minute embedded scales, unlike the more heavily armoured botiid loaches, and — unlike Botia, Chromobotia and their relatives — most Nemacheilidae, including Oxynoemacheilus, lack the prominent erectile suborbital spine that defines the spined-loach families. This species is endemic to the Filyos River system, which drains into the Black Sea in northern Turkey through the historic Paphlagonia region — giving the fish its English name, the Paphlagonian sportive loach. Within that catchment it lives in fast-flowing, clear streams and rivers over rocky and gravel substrates, the classic stone-loach habitat of cool, well-oxygenated, current-swept water.
A defining feature of this species' ecology is that it cannot survive in still water: it is confined to flowing river habitat and disappears where a stretch of river is impounded behind a dam or converted to reservoir.
