Taxonomy & naming
Oxynoemacheilus bureschi was described by the Bulgarian ichthyologist Petar Drensky in 1928, hence the parenthetical authority — the species has since been moved out of whatever genus Drensky originally placed it in as the old catch-all "Noemacheilus"/"Nemacheilus" stone loaches of Europe and the Near East were progressively split apart. It now sits in Oxynoemacheilus, one of several genera (alongside Barbatula, Paracobitis, Schistura and Triplophysa) carved out of that historic lumping as molecular and morphological work clarified relationships within the family Nemacheilidae — the largest of the loach families, and the group of small, generally unbanded "stone" or "brook" loaches distinct from the spined Cobitidae and the boldly patterned Botiidae.
The species epithet honours Ivan Yosipov Buresch, a Bulgarian zoologist, reflecting the long tradition of Balkan naturalists documenting the region's freshwater fauna. As with much of this genus, the valid combination should be treated as provisional rather than final — Balkan Oxynoemacheilus taxonomy has been reshuffled repeatedly as new phylogeographic studies resolve cryptic diversity within what once looked like a handful of widespread species.
Morphology
This is a small, elongate loach, reaching a documented maximum of about 3.5 in in total length — modest even by the standards of Nemacheilidae. As a member of the Nemacheilidae, it lacks the erectile suborbital spine that defines the true spined loaches (Cobitidae) and the botiids; that feature is not part of this family's toolkit.
