Taxonomy & naming
Oxynoemacheilus cemali was formally described in 2019 by Turan, Kaya, Kalayci, Bayçelebi & Aksu in the Journal of Fish Biology, based on specimens from the Çoruh River drainage in the eastern Black Sea basin of Turkey. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone-loach or brook-loach family — by far the largest family of loaches, with the bulk of its diversity split across genera such as Oxynoemacheilus, Schistura, Triplophysa and Barbatula following the breakup of the old, catch-all Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus.
The genus Oxynoemacheilus is itself a relatively recent segregate, erected to hold a group of Middle Eastern and Anatolian stone loaches previously lumped into Noemacheilus or Nemacheilus. Turkish and Caucasian river systems have proven unusually rich in these narrow-range Oxynoemacheilus species, with new species continuing to be described stream by stream through the 2010s and 2020s; O. cemali is one of that wave. As with any species this recently described, its taxonomic placement should be treated as current but not necessarily final — the Catalog of Fishes remains the authority for the valid combination.
Morphology
Oxynoemacheilus cemali is a small stone loach, reaching around 3 in in standard length. It shows the diagnostic features of the genus: males carry a suborbital groove (a groove beneath the eye associated with the small erectile spine typical of nemacheilid loaches) and an axillary lobe at the base of the pelvic fin, and the species lacks a dorsal adipose crest. The caudal fin is slightly forked.
Colouration follows the typical stone-loach pattern of camouflage over a rocky streambed: 7 to 15 dark grey saddles cross the back, and the flanks carry 9 to 15 irregular dark-grey bars, sometimes coalescing into a more mottled pattern rather than clean bars. This is a cryptic, elongate, cylindrical little fish built to hug gravel and cobble in fast water, not a showy display species.
Habitat
This species is known only from the Çoruh River drainage, a major river of northeastern Turkey that rises in the Mescit Mountains near Erzurum and flows north through a steep, canyon-like course before reaching the Black Sea at Batumi, Georgia. The upper tributaries run through narrow gorges, and fish diversity in the system generally increases moving downstream from the cold headwaters toward the lower reaches.
The Çoruh is a classic rheophilic river system — fast-flowing, clear and rocky — and stone loaches like O. cemali live demersally on the bottom of this current, in the company of other flow-loving fish including the related stone loach Barbatula barbatula, also recorded from the Çoruh system. As a member of a genus built for cold-to-cool, fast, highly oxygenated water, it is not a fish of still, warm lowland habitats.
Feeding
Like other small Nemacheilidae, Oxynoemacheilus cemali is a benthic micro-predator, picking small invertebrates — insect larvae and small crustaceans — off the stones and gravel of its fast-flowing home river. No species-specific dietary study has been published; this feeding mode is inferred from the ecology of the genus and family as a whole, and should be treated as the expected pattern rather than a directly observed one for this particular species.
In captivity, related stone loaches take small live and frozen foods readily — bloodworm and daphnia in particular — and are much less interested in flake or other floating foods, consistent with a fish that forages by grubbing along the substrate rather than feeding in open water.
Mating
No published account of courtship or spawning behaviour exists for Oxynoemacheilus cemali specifically; data on this recently described, narrow-range species is genuinely sparse. What is known comes from the broader pattern in Nemacheilidae: stone and brook loaches are egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water rather than forming pairs or defending a nest site.
Breeding
As with the great majority of stone and brook loaches, Oxynoemacheilus cemali is not known to have been bred in the aquarium. The expected mode, based on its genus and family, is egg-scattering over gravel in fast, oxygenated water with no parental care whatsoever — there is no cave-guarding, no mouthbrooding, and no nest-tending in this group. Given how recently the species was described and how restricted its known range is, data on its reproduction is sparse, and the honest position is that it is essentially unbred and unstudied in captivity.
In the aquarium
Oxynoemacheilus cemali is not an established aquarium fish, and there is no evidence of a captive trade in it; this account describes the care a fish of its type would require, extrapolated from its genus and family. As a small, cold-water rheophilic stone loach, it would need cool-to-cool-temperate, fast-flowing, very well-oxygenated water over a sand-and-gravel substrate with rounded stones — closer to the setup used for coldwater or subtropical river-tank species than to a typical warm community tank. Strong filtration and current, pristine water quality, and a stable low-to-moderate temperature would be essential; this is not a fish for a warm, still tank.
Like other nemacheilid loaches it is likely near-scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, a point worth flagging for anyone who might encounter it or its relatives in the trade. Given its narrow, single-river distribution and lack of any established husbandry record, it should be regarded as a subject for specialist or scientific interest rather than a general hobby fish.
Conservation
Oxynoemacheilus cemali has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List. It is known only from the Çoruh River drainage in northeastern Turkey, a system that has been subject to hydropower development, including dam and reservoir construction on its tributaries, which is a recognised pressure on Anatolian river-endemic fish generally. No population trend or threat assessment specific to this species has been published, and given its very recent description and narrow known range, its conservation status should be considered genuinely unknown rather than assumed safe.
