Taxonomy & naming
Oxynoemacheilus ciceki was formally described in 2017 by Sungur, Jalili and Eagderi in the Iranian Journal of Ichthyology, based on specimens collected from Sultan Marsh in Kayseri Province, Turkey. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by species count the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, and one whose genus-level boundaries (the old catch-all Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus split apart over recent decades into Oxynoemacheilus, Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and others) have been repeatedly revised as researchers reassess Eurasia's stream-loach diversity. The Catalog of Fishes is the standing authority for the valid combination, and it places this species in Oxynoemacheilus, the genus that today holds most of the small stone loaches native to Anatolia, the Levant and parts of the Middle East.
The species epithet ciceki honors Prof. Dr. Erdoğan Çiçek, recognizing his contribution to the study of Turkish freshwater fishes. As with many recently described Oxynoemacheilus, it is known only from its type locality, and no meaningful synonymy exists in the literature — this is a straightforward, recently erected name with no older combination to untangle.
Morphology
Oxynoemacheilus ciceki is a small, slender stone loach, with the holotype measuring 2 in standard length and the species reported to reach about 3 in total length. The body is yellowish brown to pale gray, marked with irregular dark spots along the flanks, and the cheeks carry their own scatter of tiny spots — a pattern typical of the genus's cryptic, streambed-matching coloration. The caudal peduncle is comparatively thin, and the lateral line runs complete along the body, a trait used to separate it from several congeners with incomplete lateral lines.
Like other Oxynoemacheilus, the skin is effectively scaleless, and the species carries the erectile suborbital spine typical of true loaches — a small defensive spine folded into a groove beneath the eye that can be flicked out when the fish is threatened or handled. Diagnostic detail from the original description includes four central and four lateral pores in the supra-temporal canal and a thick lower lip with a deep median interruption; the dorsal fin carries 11 soft rays and the anal fin 8. Being near-scaleless, the species is presumed to share the family-wide sensitivity to copper and full-strength medications, though this has not been specifically tested.
Habitat
The species is endemic to Sultan Marsh (Sultan Sazlığı), a Ramsar-listed wetland complex in Kayseri Province, central Anatolia, Turkey, centered around 38°23'N, 35°22'E. The marsh sits in a continental climate zone with a harsh seasonal swing — summer air temperatures can exceed 122 °F while winters reach freezing — and the wetland supports at least 16 recorded fish species, of which O. ciceki is one of the narrow-range endemics. Specific water chemistry data (pH, hardness, conductivity) for the population have not been published in the sources available.
As a Nemacheilidae species, it almost certainly occupies the same clear, cool-to-cool-temperate, well-oxygenated shallows and spring-fed channels that stone loaches favor throughout Anatolia, hugging gravel, sand and stone substrates rather than open water. Sultan Marsh's protected status reflects the broader ecological value of the site, but detailed habitat descriptions specific to this species beyond its type locality are not available in the current literature.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary study has been published for Oxynoemacheilus ciceki. Based on the well-documented ecology of its genus and family, it is reasonable to describe it as a benthic micro-predator: a bottom-forager that picks small invertebrates — insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and other invertebrate prey — off gravel, sand and stone in clear, flowing water, in the manner typical of Nemacheilidae generally.
In husbandry, stone loaches of this kind are usually kept on sinking foods — small live or frozen invertebrate foods and sinking pellets or wafers — since they forage at the substrate and often overlook food that stays in midwater or on the surface. No aquarium feeding records exist specifically for this species, so this should be read as a genus-level expectation rather than a documented fact.
Mating
Nothing specific has been published on courtship or spawning behavior in Oxynoemacheilus ciceki, and no external sexual dimorphism has been described for the species. Data are sparse even at the genus level for most Oxynoemacheilus, many of which — like this one — are known only from the original taxonomic description and limited follow-up fieldwork.
What is known for stone and brook loaches generally is that they are egg-scattering fish with no pair-bonding or nest behavior: ripe adults broadcast eggs over gravel and stone in flowing water rather than forming pairs or defending territory. Whether this holds specifically for O. ciceki in Sultan Marsh has not been documented, and no dimorphism or seasonal spawning cues are recorded for the species.
Breeding
As with mating behavior, no breeding records exist for Oxynoemacheilus ciceki in the wild or in captivity. Nemacheilidae as a family are egg-scatterers over gravel and stone in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry, and this is the reasonable default expectation for the species pending direct observation.
Home or scientific captive breeding of this species has not been reported. Like the great majority of small-range Oxynoemacheilus, it should be treated as a species that is rarely or never bred outside its native marsh — data here are simply too sparse to say more, and no aquarium trade or captive population is documented.
In the aquarium
Oxynoemacheilus ciceki is not established in the aquarium trade, and no husbandry records for the species could be found. It is a scientifically described endemic of one protected Turkish wetland rather than a fish that has been collected, exported or kept by hobbyists.
Were it ever kept, the sensible starting point would follow the general Nemacheilidae template: clear, cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated, flowing water over a sand-and-gravel substrate, a gentle-natured tankmate list, and caution with medications given the family-wide scaleless skin and copper sensitivity. But this is inference from its relatives, not documented care advice — anyone encountering this species should treat it as a conservation subject rather than a stocking option.
Conservation
Oxynoemacheilus ciceki has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries no formal conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. As a species described only in 2017 and known solely from Sultan Marsh, it fits the profile of many recently discovered Anatolian stone loaches: single-locality endemics whose conservation status simply has not caught up with their taxonomy.
Sultan Marsh itself is a Ramsar-designated wetland, which affords the site formal recognition and a measure of protection, but Ramsar status does not equate to a species-level assessment, and no population trend or threat data specific to this fish have been published. Given its restriction to a single wetland system in a region where water extraction, drought and wetland drainage are recognized regional pressures, a narrow-range endemic like this warrants monitoring even in the absence of a formal Red List category.
