Taxonomy & naming
Oxynoemacheilus cilicicus was formally described in 2020 by Erdoğan Kaya, Davut Turan, Fatih Bayçelebi, Ramazan Kalayci and Jörg Freyhof, published in Zootaxa. The type locality is the Göksu River drainage in southern Anatolia, part of the wider Seyhan-Ceyhan river system that drains the Taurus Mountains into the Eastern Mediterranean — the region the epithet "cilicicus" refers to, after ancient Cilicia, the historical name for this stretch of southern Turkey.
The species belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone loach family and by species count the largest family of loaches, and to the genus Oxynoemacheilus, one of several genera (alongside Barbatula, Seminemacheilus and others) carved out of the old broad "Noemacheilus"/"Nemacheilus" concept as Middle Eastern and Anatolian stream loaches have been re-examined. The describing team distinguished it from the similar Oxynoemacheilus panthera using both morphology and DNA barcoding, reporting 22 variable nucleotide substitutions in the mitochondrial COI gene between the two (a genetic distance of about 4.09%) alongside physical differences. As with many recently split Anatolian stone loaches, older regional records may still sit under older names in some literature; the Catalog of Fishes governs the currently valid combination, Oxynoemacheilus cilicicus.
Morphology
Oxynoemacheilus cilicicus is a small, slender stone loach reaching about 4 in in total length, in keeping with the modest size typical of Nemacheilidae. The 2020 description separates it from its close relative O. panthera by a combination of characters: an incomplete lateral line that stops short of the dorsal-fin origin rather than running the full length of the body, a deeply emarginate (notched) caudal fin, the absence of a suborbital groove in males, and dark-brown flank bars that run uninterrupted across the lateral line rather than being broken by it.
Like other members of its family, it has the elongated, near-cylindrical body plan of a benthic stream specialist, small eyes set high on the head, and barbels around the mouth for detecting food on the streambed. Many nemacheilids carry a small erectile spine below the eye, though this is far less developed than the prominent suborbital spine of the botiid loaches; detailed data on this and other fine anatomical points for O. cilicicus specifically are limited to the primary description, much of which remains behind a technical paywall.
Habitat
This species is known from the Göksu River and, per its describing authors, the wider Göksu, Seyhan and Ceyhan river system of southern Anatolia — a network of streams draining the Taurus Mountains toward the Eastern Mediterranean coast of Turkey. FishBase classifies it as a subtropical, freshwater, demersal fish, consistent with the stony, flowing habitat typical of Oxynoemacheilus species: clear, cool-to-cool-temperate, well-oxygenated water running over gravel and rock substrate.
A Turkish fish-fauna assessment of the Göksu River notes that this river system supports endemic loach species alongside habitat pressures from dams, hydroelectric development and drought stress — underscoring that this is a fish of a specific, limited, and not fully secure river system rather than a widespread generalist. No aquarium-relevant water-chemistry data has been published for the species; care parameters here are inferred from its subtropical, flowing, rocky-river habitat rather than measured directly.
Feeding
No diet-specific data has been published for Oxynoemacheilus cilicicus; FishBase's summary for the species leaves food habits unrecorded, and its trophic level (about 2.8) is estimated from body size and the diet of close relatives rather than direct study. Based on the well-documented feeding ecology of Nemacheilidae generally, it is reasonable to expect this species is a benthic micro-predator, picking small invertebrates such as insect larvae and tiny crustaceans from the gravel of its home streams — but this should be read as an inference from the family, not a confirmed fact about this species.
There is no aquarium feeding experience to report, since the species is not established in the hobby.
Mating
No information on courtship, sexing or spawning behaviour has been published for this species. The 2020 description notes the absence of a suborbital groove in males as a distinguishing character from O. panthera, which implies some sexual dimorphism exists in the genus, but no broader account of breeding behaviour for O. cilicicus itself is available in the sources consulted.
Breeding
Oxynoemacheilus cilicicus has no known aquarium-breeding history, and stone and brook loaches of Nemacheilidae as a family are only rarely bred in captivity in general. Where nemacheilid spawning has been documented, the pattern is that of an egg-scatterer: eggs are released and scattered over gravel or among stones in flowing water, with no parental care afterward. In the absence of species-specific data, that general family pattern is the most honest description available — this is very much a data-sparse case, and no verified aquarium spawning of this particular species has been reported.
In the aquarium
Oxynoemacheilus cilicicus is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense — it has no presence in the ornamental trade, and virtually everything published about it comes from taxonomic and river-survey literature rather than fishkeeping experience. It is included here for completeness as a scientifically documented member of the stone loach family, not as a species available to hobbyists.
Were it ever encountered, the general husbandry rules for Nemacheilidae would apply cautiously: cool-to-moderate, clean, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over a gravel or rock substrate to mimic its native river habitat, and the same caution around medications that applies to scaleless loaches generally, since heavy scale loss is characteristic of the wider stone-loach group. None of this has been tested on the species itself, and no responsible sourcing pathway for it currently exists.
Conservation
Oxynoemacheilus cilicicus has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so no conservation category applies to it here; it is recorded as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. Described only in 2020, it is one of many recently split Anatolian stream endemics that have not yet been through a Red List assessment.
Its known range is confined to the Göksu River and the connected Seyhan-Ceyhan drainage of southern Turkey, a system reported to face pressure from dam construction, hydroelectric development and drought — the kind of pressures that often place narrow-range river endemics at risk even before formal assessment catches up. There is no aquarium trade in this species and therefore no trade-driven collecting pressure to report.
