Oxynoemacheilus cyri was described by the Russian ichthyologist Lev Berg in 1910. Like many western Palaearctic stone loaches it spent decades shuffled between broader genera — it has been treated at various points as Nemacheilus cyri and as Nemacheilus tigris cyri, a subspecies-level name under the wide-ranging Nemacheilus tigris complex. Modern revisions of the Cobitoidea split the old catch-all Nemacheilus into several more narrowly defined genera across Europe, the Caucasus and the Middle East, and this species now sits in Oxynoemacheilus, a species-rich genus of stone loaches distributed from Albania in the west to central Iran in the east.
The species epithet cyri references Cyrus, the classical Greco-Roman name for the Kura River, underscoring how tightly this fish is tied to a single drainage. It is closely related to, but distinct from, Oxynoemacheilus brandtii (the Kura loach proper), which ranges more widely across the Kura basin through Armenia, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Iran; O. cyri by contrast is described as a narrower, high-mountain-stream endemic within that same broader system.
Morphology
As a nemacheilid, Oxynoemacheilus cyri has the characteristic stone-loach build: an elongate, sub-cylindrical body, a flattened belly suited to hugging the streambed, and a small, ventrally positioned mouth ringed with barbels for feeling over gravel.
