Taxonomy & naming
Oxynoemacheilus eliasi was formally described in 2022 by Yoğurtçuoğlu, Kaya and Freyhof as part of a revision of the Oxynoemacheilus angorae species group, published in Zootaxa. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, and one whose genera have been repeatedly reshuffled as molecular work resolves what used to be a single catch-all Noemacheilus/Nemacheilus into many narrower genera, Oxynoemacheilus among them.
Genetic work placed O. eliasi close to Oxynoemacheilus theophilii, from which it differs by roughly 2.7% in mitochondrial (K2P) sequence divergence, alongside a set of distinguishing morphological characters. As a very recently described, narrow-range endemic, it has not yet been picked up by aquarium literature or hobbyist resources; everything known about it currently comes from the taxonomic description itself.
Morphology
This is a small loach, reported at roughly 1.5–2.5 in standard length across the type series, with body depth decreasing steadily from the dorsal-fin base back to the caudal peduncle. The flanks carry a mottled, marbled pattern typical of small nemacheilid stone loaches, giving it effective camouflage against gravel and cobble substrates.
Diagnostic features used to separate it from close relatives include small, embedded scales on the belly, a narrow suborbital groove in males (the modified channel associated with the erectile suborbital spine found across many nemacheilids), an emarginate caudal fin, and a caudal peduncle 1.3–1.5 times deeper than long relative to its depth. As in other Nemacheilidae, the skin is effectively naked to the eye — the scales are tiny and deeply embedded rather than absent, but the practical effect for husbandry (were this species ever kept) would be the same medication sensitivity seen across the family.
Habitat
Oxynoemacheilus eliasi is endemic to the Küçük Menderes and Gediz river drainages, two river systems draining into the Aegean Sea in western Turkey (Anatolia). Both are classic Anatolian stone-loach habitat: clear, flowing freshwater over gravel, cobble and sand, typical of the small streams and rivers this genus favors across the Middle East and Anatolia.
No specific published water-chemistry or temperature data exist for this species. Congeners in Oxynoemacheilus generally occupy cool-to-mild, well-oxygenated, flowing streams rather than warm still water, and there is no reason to expect this narrow Aegean-basin endemic to differ, but that inference should be read as a reasonable extrapolation from the genus rather than a measured fact for eliasi itself.
Feeding
No diet data have been published for Oxynoemacheilus eliasi. Stone and brook loaches as a group are bottom-foraging micro-predators, picking small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and tiny crustaceans — from among stream gravel, and there is no indication this species departs from that pattern. Given the total absence of direct observation, this should be treated as a genus-level inference, not a confirmed fact about eliasi.
Mating
Nothing has been recorded about courtship, sex differences, or spawning behavior in Oxynoemacheilus eliasi. The species was described from preserved type material collected for taxonomic purposes, not from live observation, and no aquarium or field breeding notes exist in the literature to date.
Breeding
There is no breeding record for this species in the aquarium or in the wild. Stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae) as a family are typically egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel in fast-flowing water with no parental care, and are rarely bred in captivity even where they are established in the hobby — this is a reasonable expectation for eliasi's mode, but it has not been observed or documented for this particular species. Data is sparse to the point of nonexistent, and that gap should be stated plainly rather than filled in.
In the aquarium
Oxynoemacheilus eliasi does not appear to be established in the aquarium trade; no care sheets, import records, or hobbyist accounts were found. As a small Anatolian stone loach, any future keeper should expect the general needs of the genus — cool-to-mild, clean, well-oxygenated, flowing water over gravel or sand, and the caution that applies across nearly scaleless nemacheilids: sensitivity to copper and full-strength medications. Until real husbandry data exists, that guidance is a genus-level starting point, not a verified profile for this species.
Conservation
Oxynoemacheilus eliasi has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List; as a species described in 2022, it is simply too recent to have gone through formal evaluation, and it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. As a narrow-range endemic restricted to two river drainages in western Turkey, it shares the general vulnerability of small Anatolian stream loaches to habitat pressures — water abstraction, damming and pollution are well-documented threats across the region's endemic freshwater fauna — but no species-specific conservation assessment or population trend has been published for eliasi itself.
