Taxonomy & naming
Oxynoemacheilus euphraticus was described by Petru Bănărescu and Teodor Nalbant in 1964, originally as a subspecies, Nemacheilus insignis euphraticus, before later work raised it to full species status in the genus Oxynoemacheilus. This kind of history is typical of the group: the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus have been repeatedly split over the past few decades, with many of their western Palaearctic species — including this one — moved into Oxynoemacheilus, a genus now recognized by the Catalog of Fishes as ranging from Albania in the west to central Iran, with well over 40 species, many of them in Turkey.
It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest family of loaches and one still being actively revised as researchers work through cryptic, range-restricted species across the Middle East and Central Asia. A related species from the Karun drainage, O. freyhofi, has been treated as a synonym of O. euphraticus, and O. euphraticus is known to hybridize with O. kurdistanicus where their ranges meet in the upper Tigris — a reminder of how fine-grained and still-unsettled the taxonomy of this genus remains.
Morphology
This is a small, slender stone loach, reported at 1–3 in standard length with most individuals in the 1.5–2.5 in range — modest even by Nemacheilidae standards. Like other Oxynoemacheilus, males carry a suborbital groove near the eye, a genus-level anatomical feature used to help separate these otherwise similar-looking small loaches; the caudal fin is deeply emarginate to forked.
As with the wider genus, the skin is effectively naked to the touch, without the heavier armour of some other loach groups — a point that matters for how the species should be handled and treated in captivity, though this exact species has essentially no aquarium record to draw on. Habitat
Oxynoemacheilus euphraticus is restricted to the Euphrates and Tigris river drainages, known from headwater streams in Turkey's Sivas, Malatya and Adiyaman provinces and extending into the wider basin across Iraq, Syria and Iran. The type locality is the Euphrates River itself at İliç, Sivas Province, Turkey.
Genus-wide, Oxynoemacheilus species are specialists of fast-flowing, oxygen-rich streams with rocky or gravel substrate and low turbidity, typically in foothill and montane reaches at temperatures around 59–77 °F and a pH near neutral to slightly alkaline (roughly 7–8). This species is described as living in moderately flowing streams and river headwaters, sheltering among stones on the bottom — a cool, clear, running-water fish, not a still-water or blackwater species, and there is no indication in the record of tolerance for warm, stagnant conditions.
Feeding
Oxynoemacheilus euphraticus is a benthic micro-predator, in keeping with the genus as a whole: it forages over stream-bottom gravel and stones for small invertebrates, insect larvae and small crustaceans.
