Oxynoemacheilus frenatus is a small, bold stone loach from the upper Tigris drainage of Turkey, Syria and Iraq, a pale brown fish mottled with darker bands that spends its life hugging the bottom of fast, clear, oxygen-rich streams. It is one of the largest genera of true loaches — family Nemacheilidae — and, like most of its relatives, it lives a quiet life largely out of the aquarium spotlight: locally common in its native drainage, but data-sparse in the hobby literature and essentially unknown as a captive breeder. Reaching only around 3 in, it is a benthic micro-predator that picks small invertebrates off rocky and gravel substrates in moderate-to-fast current.

Taxonomy & naming

Oxynoemacheilus frenatus was described by the Austrian naturalist Jakob Heckel in 1843, part of the wave of Middle Eastern freshwater fish description that came out of 19th-century collecting expeditions to the Ottoman Empire and Persia. Over the following century and a half it passed through the two big catch-all genera used for Eurasian stone loaches, appearing in older literature as Nemacheilus frenatus and Noemacheilus frenatus before the genus Oxynoemacheilus was resurrected and expanded to hold many Middle Eastern and Anatolian species once lumped there.

The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the current combination, Oxynoemacheilus frenatus, in the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. The genus remains an active area of research: a closely related species, Oxynoemacheilus marunensis, was only described in 2020 from the Persian Gulf basin, with that description explicitly discussing and comparing O. frenatus, a reminder that the taxonomy of this genus is still being resolved stream by stream.

Morphology

This is a small, elongate loach, reported at around 3 in standard length, with the slim, faintly compressed body typical of the stone and brook loaches. Its ground colour is pale brown, overlaid with a mottled pattern of darker blotches and bands — cryptic colouration that suits a fish sitting motionless on light gravel or rock in clear, fast water. As in other Nemacheilidae, the skin carries only small, deeply embedded scales or none at all over much of the body, leaving it more exposed than a typically scaled fish, a point that matters for handling and medication.

Detailed morphological data — fin ray counts, barbel number, exact suborbital spine development — are not covered in the sources available here, and much of the fine anatomy that separates Oxynoemacheilus species is described only in specialist taxonomic papers. This is the honest picture for the great majority of Nemacheilidae — small, hardy, often locally abundant fish in the wild that nonetheless remain essentially unbred at home, with population in the trade, where it appears at all, sourced from wild collection rather than captive propagation.

As with other Nemacheilidae, the reduced scalation typical of the family means this fish should be treated cautiously with medications — copper-based treatments and full-strength doses of many standard remedies are best avoided or halved, a precaution worth taking even without a species-specific account of sensitivity in the sources here. Given its modest 3 in size and stream-dwelling habits, a well-oxygenated, moderately-to-fast-flowing tank with a rocky substrate and hiding places among stones is the safest approach absent more detailed published care guidance.

Conservation

Oxynoemacheilus frenatus is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern.
