Oxynoemacheilus hamwii is a small stone loach known only from the Orontes River system, the Tigris-Euphrates-adjacent drainage that runs through Lebanon, Syria and Turkey. A member of Nemacheilidae, the largest and least-known loach family, it is a modest, clear-water micro-predator that has quietly become one of the more urgent conservation stories in this section of the atlas: once common through the late twentieth century, it is now Endangered, restricted to three streams on the Turkish side of the drainage and to the Afrin River in Syria, and effectively extirpated from the rest of its historic Syrian range. It is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade, and almost nothing has been published on its diet, breeding or captive care — this is a fish documented by field ichthyologists and conservation assessors, not by hobbyists.

Taxonomy & naming

Oxynoemacheilus hamwii was described by Krupp and Schneider in 1991 as Nemacheilus hamwii, placing it in the old, broad catch-all genus that once absorbed most of the region's stone loaches. As with many West Asian and Anatolian nemacheilids, subsequent revision split that genus apart, and the species is now placed in Oxynoemacheilus — the current combination recognised by the Catalog of Fishes, the authority followed here. The species epithet honours Professor Adel Hamwi, a zoologist at the University of Damascus.

It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches, by far the largest loach family and one still being actively reworked as regional faunas are resurveyed. Older literature and some database records may still carry the original Nemacheilus hamwii combination; the two names refer to the same fish.

Morphology

Oxynoemacheilus hamwii is a small nemacheilid, reaching a maximum recorded length of about 3.5 in standard length — modest even by the standards of this family. Detailed published description of its colour pattern and fin morphology is sparse in the sources available here; what is documented centres on its ecology and conservation status rather than fine anatomical detail.

As is typical for the genus and family, it can be expected to share the nemacheilid body plan: an elongate, cylindrical body suited to holding position in flowing water, a small mouth for picking food from the substrate, and the near-scaleless skin common to loaches generally, which makes the group sensitive to medication and slow to recover from skin damage. Specific data on this species' suborbital-spine development and fin-ray counts is not covered in the sources consulted.

Habitat

This species is native to the Orontes River drainage, part of the wider Tigris-Euphrates basin system, with historic range spanning Lebanon, Syria and Turkey. It lives in cool, clear, fast-flowing streams over mud and gravel substrates, in well-oxygenated water — the classic stone-loach habitat of a small, undisturbed headwater or tributary stream rather than a large river channel.

The species is notably sensitive to pollution and to disruption of its flow regime, and its current range has contracted sharply from what it once occupied. It now survives in only three streams on the Turkish portion of the drainage and in the Afrin River in Syria; it has been extirpated from the core of its former Syrian range. This is a subtropical, strictly freshwater fish — the available sources do not give specific temperature data, but the region's climate and the species' cool, flowing-stream habitat point away from a warm, still-water fish.

Feeding

Sexual dimorphism, breeding season, and any migratory or flow-triggered spawning cues remain unrecorded here — a gap consistent with a species that is well studied by conservation assessors and regional faunal surveys but essentially unknown to aquarists or captive breeders.

Breeding

There are no documented captive-breeding records for Oxynoemacheilus hamwii. Following the pattern typical of Nemacheilidae, it is presumed to be an egg-scatterer, releasing eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water with no parental care — but this is an inference from the family's general biology rather than a confirmed observation for this species.

The honest picture is that this fish has never, as far as the available literature shows, been bred in an aquarium. It is not in the ornamental trade in any meaningful way, and the data that exists on it comes from field surveys and IUCN assessment work rather than hobbyist spawning reports.

In the aquarium

Oxynoemacheilus hamwii is not a fish encountered in the aquarium trade, and no aquarium-care literature specific to this species was located. A general search of ornamental-fish care resources for loaches turned up broad guidance for the group but nothing addressing this species' particular needs, diet or water-parameter requirements in captivity.

What can be said, extrapolating cautiously from its wild habitat and from stone-loach biology generally, is that any captive attempt would need to replicate cool, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over a soft substrate, and — as with all loaches — careful, reduced-strength medication given its presumed near-scaleless skin. Given its Endangered status and its restriction to a handful of remaining streams, this is a species better left to conservation-focused ex-situ programs than to the general hobby.

Conservation

Oxynoemacheilus hamwii is assessed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List (2022 assessment). It was common through the late twentieth century but has since undergone a severe range contraction: it survives today in only three streams in the Turkish portion of the Orontes drainage and in the Afrin River in Syria, and has been extirpated from the main body of its former Syrian range.

The principal threats are heavy human water use throughout the Orontes drainage — extraction, damming and diversion for agriculture and other purposes — compounded by declining rainfall linked to climate change in the region. This is a clear case of a narrow-range stream endemic whose habitat is being consumed and dried by human water demand rather than by the aquarium trade, which has essentially no presence here.
