Taxonomy & naming
Oxynoemacheilus isauricus was formally described in 2021 by Yoğurtçuoğlu, Kaya, Özuluğ and Freyhof, in a Zootaxa paper resolving several endemic stone loaches of the Beyşehir–Suğla drainage system in central Anatolia. It sits in the genus Oxynoemacheilus, one of several genera carved in recent decades out of the old, catch-all Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus — a reshuffling the Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid fish names, continues to track as Cobitoidea taxonomy is revised.
The original description places its closest relatives as O. eregliensis and O. atili, from which it differs by 7.5–8.0% in mitochondrial COI sequence divergence — a substantial genetic gap for such superficially similar small loaches, underscoring how much cryptic diversity remains to be described in Anatolian stream systems. The genus Oxynoemacheilus itself is large, with roughly 71 recognized species ranging from Albania in the west to central Iran in the east.
Morphology
As a member of Nemacheilidae, the largest family of true loaches, O. isauricus is a small, elongate, near-scaleless bottom-dweller built for gripping stream substrate rather than showy display. The type description notes a slender build with a relatively short head (21–24% of standard length) and, distinctively for the genus, a very slender caudal peduncle — its depth just 2.2 to 2.6 times its length — paired with a row of midlateral blotches along the flank.
Like other nemacheilids, it almost certainly carries the small, erectile suborbital spine typical of the group, tucked in a groove beneath the eye, along with the reduced, deeply embedded scalation that leaves stone loaches functionally naked-skinned. Beyond the diagnostic measurements in the original description, detailed morphological and colour-pattern data for living specimens has not been located; much of the fish's day-to-day appearance in life remains undocumented in the sources available here.
Habitat
Oxynoemacheilus isauricus is endemic to the Lakes Beyşehir and Suğla basins of central Anatolia, Turkey, with its type locality in the stream Çeltek in Isparta Province. This places it in a landlocked, high-plateau drainage system typical of the many narrow-range Oxynoemacheilus species scattered across Anatolia, each often confined to a single lake basin or stream network.
Across the genus, Oxynoemacheilus species occupy habitats from moderately fast-flowing streams and rivers to near-stagnant springs, typically over mud or gravel substrates, in cool-to-mild freshwater systems. No site-specific water chemistry or flow data for O. isauricus itself was located in the sources reviewed; the safest statement is that it lives in the kind of clear, cool-to-moderate flowing central Anatolian stream and spring habitat typical of its close relatives, rather than a warm, still, tropical setting.
Feeding
No diet-specific data for Oxynoemacheilus isauricus was located in the available sources. Based on the well-documented ecology of Nemacheilidae generally, it is reasonable to describe it as a benthic micro-predator, picking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — off the streambed, in the manner typical of stone and brook loaches across the family.
