Oxynoemacheilus kiabii is a small stone loach known only from the Karkheh River drainage of western Iran, where it lives in cool, fast-flowing, gravel-bottomed streams. Described in 2011 and named for the Iranian conservationist Bahram H. Kiabi, it is a classic member of the family Nemacheilidae — the largest loach family, made up almost entirely of small, clear-water, single-drainage specialists that never reach the aquarium trade and are often known from just a handful of collecting sites. This is exactly that kind of fish: a narrow-range endemic with real morphological data on record but almost nothing published on its husbandry, and honesty about that gap matters more here than filling it with guesswork.

Taxonomy & naming

Oxynoemacheilus kiabii was formally described by Golzarianpour, Abdoli & Freyhof in 2011 from the Karkheh River drainage of Iran, with the type locality given as the stream Dehnoo. It sits in the genus Oxynoemacheilus, one of several genera carved in recent decades out of the old wastebasket genus Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus as the stone-loach family Nemacheilidae was reorganised along more rigorous morphological and molecular lines — a reshuffle that, elsewhere in the family, produced genera such as Schistura, Triplophysa and Barbatula. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the standing authority for valid fish names, recognises Oxynoemacheilus kiabii as a valid species in the family Nemacheilidae.

The species epithet honours Bahram H. Kiabi, an Iranian ichthyologist and conservationist recognised for his work on the country's freshwater fauna. A later osteological study (Mafakheri et al., 2014, Iranian Journal of Ichthyology) examined specimens collected by electrofishing from the Gamasiab River, a tributary within the same Karkheh drainage, and confirmed the species as skeletally distinct from its close relative Oxynoemacheilus bergianus and other regional congeners — useful independent support for a species originally separated on external morphology.

Morphology

This is a small stone loach, with FishBase citing a maximum length of about 3 in total length and the type series holotype measuring 2 in standard length — a genuinely small fish even by Nemacheilidae standards. The original description separates it from close congeners on a set of fine anatomical details: it has two lateral pores per supratemporal canal rather than one central pore, males lack the suborbital flap or groove seen in some relatives, the caudal fin is only slightly emarginate, the lateral line is incomplete, the head is notably long, and the flanks carry large, vertically elongated blotches rather than a continuous band or fine speckling.

Like other Nemacheilidae it has the near-scaleless, soft skin typical of stone and brook loaches, a trait that makes the whole family sensitive to harsh medications even though this species' own disease tolerance has not been specifically studied. Data on the presence or development of an erectile suborbital spine in this particular species were not found in the sources reviewed; the suborbital-groove note above concerns a flap structure related to, but distinct from, the spine seen in some other loach lineages, and the safest statement is that fine anatomical detail here is a matter for the primary description rather than general assumption.

Habitat

Oxynoemacheilus kiabii is endemic to the Karkheh River drainage of western Iran, and has been recorded both at its Dehnoo-stream type locality and from the Gamasiab River, a tributary within the same system. FishBase classifies it as a subtropical, demersal freshwater fish, and the original description characterises its stream microhabitat in some detail: water depth of roughly 18–20.5 in, channel width of 2–3 ft, a bed gradient of 5.8–6.4%, and a flow velocity of 2 ft/s — in short, a modest, cool, fast-flowing, moderately steep stream rather than a large river or still backwater.

That combination of narrow channel, steep gradient and brisk current is the signature habitat of a Nemacheilidae stone loach: a fish that clings to a well-oxygenated, gravel- and stone-bottomed streambed rather than drifting in open water. No published data on the drainage's exact water temperature or pH were located; given the subtropical, fast-flowing stream setting, cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated water is a reasonable inference, but the precise figures should be treated as unknown rather than assumed.

Feeding

No species-specific feeding studies for Oxynoemacheilus kiabii were found in the sources reviewed. Nemacheilidae stone loaches as a family are overwhelmingly benthic micro-predators, working the stream bottom for small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and similar prey — rather than grazing algae or browsing plants, and there is no reason from its habitat or anatomy to expect this species to differ.

In the near-total absence of direct data, the honest statement is that its diet in the wild is presumed rather than documented: a bottom-foraging invertebrate feeder typical of its family and habitat. Any aquarium feeding regimen for a fish like this would need to follow that same pattern — small live, frozen or sinking foods offered at the substrate — but no aquarium feeding record for the species itself exists to confirm it.

Mating

No courtship, spawning-season or sexual-dimorphism data for Oxynoemacheilus kiabii were located in the sources reviewed. The original description is a morphological species account, not a life-history study, and no subsequent field or captive observations of its reproductive behaviour appear to have been published.

What can be said comes from its family: Nemacheilidae stone and brook loaches as a group are egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water with no courtship display or pair bond of the kind seen in cave-spawning or mouthbrooding fishes. There is no basis to expect this narrow-range Iranian endemic to differ from that pattern, but for this species specifically it remains an inference from family biology rather than an observed fact.

Breeding

As with courtship, no breeding record exists for Oxynoemacheilus kiabii in the literature reviewed here. Consistent with its family, the expected mode is egg-scattering over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward — the standard reproductive strategy across Nemacheilidae stone and brook loaches, and one with no cave-guarding male, no mouthbrooding, and no extended parental investment of any kind.

There is no evidence this species has ever been bred in captivity, and given how little is documented even about its basic biology, that is unsurprising. This is squarely a data-sparse case: a recently described, single-drainage endemic that has drawn taxonomic and osteological attention but no aquarium or captive-breeding interest, and the article records that gap honestly rather than inventing detail.

In the aquarium

Oxynoemacheilus kiabii is not established in the aquarium hobby, and no husbandry accounts, care-sheet data or trade records for it were found. It is not a species one would expect to encounter for sale: a small, plain-patterned stone loach endemic to a single Iranian river drainage, its interest is scientific and conservation-related rather than ornamental.

Were it ever kept, general Nemacheilidae husbandry principles would apply — cool-to-moderate, clean, well-oxygenated, flowing water over a stony or gravel substrate, and the same caution around harsh medications and copper-based treatments that applies to the near-scaleless skin of stone loaches generally. But none of that has been tested on this species, and a keeper should not treat those inferences as a verified care sheet.

Conservation

Oxynoemacheilus kiabii has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; no assessment for the species was located in an IUCN Red List search. Given its very restricted known range — apparently confined to the Karkheh River drainage, including the Dehnoo stream type locality and the Gamasiab River tributary — and the general vulnerability of single-drainage freshwater endemics to habitat disturbance, water abstraction and pollution, a future assessment would be worth watching for, but none currently exists.

There is no evidence of any aquarium trade in this species, so collection pressure is not a documented concern; any conservation risk here would stem from broader pressures on Iranian freshwater systems rather than ornamental demand. As with much of this genus, the honest picture is one of a recently described, poorly known endemic whose conservation status is presently unassessed rather than confirmed safe.
