Oxynoemacheilus kurdistanicus was described in 2014 by Kamangar, Prokofiev, Ghaderi and Nalbant in a paper devoted to the stone loaches of the Choman River system, Kurdistan, Iran (Zootaxa 3755(1): 33–61), which introduced it as one of three new species from that single drainage. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, made up mostly of small, clear-stream benthic fishes across Eurasia.
The genus Oxynoemacheilus sits within a group of Middle Eastern and Anatolian nemacheilids that were long lumped under the older, broader names Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus before repeated taxonomic revision split them along more natural lines. Morphology
Like other stone loaches, O. kurdistanicus is a small, elongate, cylindrical fish built for holding station on the substrate in flowing water.
