Taxonomy & naming
Oxynoemacheilus mesudae was described by the Turkish ichthyologist Erhan Erk'akan in 2012, one of a wave of species split out of the old, broadly-defined "Nemacheilus" and "Noemacheilus" as the western Palaearctic stone loaches were revised through molecular and morphological work. It belongs to the genus Oxynoemacheilus, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the largest family of true loaches and the one that holds most of the small, scaleless "stone" or "brook" loaches of Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid combination and lists the species as Oxynoemacheilus mesudae, with no synonymy suggesting an older or alternate genus placement for this particular species — it was erected directly in Oxynoemacheilus rather than moved there from Nemacheilus, as happened with many of its relatives. It sits among a large radiation of similar-looking Anatolian and western Asian Oxynoemacheilus species, several of which, like this one, are restricted to single drainages or spring systems.
Morphology
As with other members of the genus, Oxynoemacheilus mesudae is a small, elongate, cylindrical loach with a flattened underside suited to life on the stream bed, a pointed snout with barbels for probing gravel, and small paired fins used to hold station against current. Data from a study population in Küfe Creek recorded lengths of 2.5–3.5 in across 14 specimens, putting it firmly in the small-bodied range typical of the genus.
Like its Nemacheilidae relatives it is a near-scaleless loach, its skin protected by a thin covering of very small, deeply embedded scales rather than the more armoured scaling of many other fish groups — a trait that matters for disease sensitivity and medication (see In the aquarium). Detailed pigmentation and fin-ray counts specific to this species are not covered in the sources available here; as with many narrow-range stone loaches, fine anatomical detail beyond the original description is sparse outside the primary ichthyological literature.
Habitat
This species is a strict endemic of the Lake Işıklı basin in the upper Büyük Menderes drainage of Denizli Province, western Turkey, known from tributary streams and springs feeding the lake rather than from the lake body itself. Surveys report it from only four springs, underscoring how narrow its range is even within its home basin.
Its habitat is the clear, cool-to-cold, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water typical of Anatolian spring and stream systems — running over gravel, stone and sand rather than the still, warm, tannin-stained water associated with many tropical aquarium fish. This is a coldwater-to-cool-temperate stream specialist, not a warm-water species, and its survival is tied directly to the health of a small number of specific springs.
Feeding
Oxynoemacheilus species are benthic micro-predators, foraging over gravel and stone for small invertebrates — insect larvae and small crustaceans make up the typical diet across the genus. Nothing in the available sources suggests this species differs from that pattern, and no aquarium-specific feeding data exists for it.
In a hypothetical aquarium setting it would be expected to take small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, small worms — sinking to reach it on the bottom, with flake likely to go unnoticed by a fish that feeds head-down in current. This is inference from genus-level biology rather than documented aquarium experience, since the species is not established in the trade.
Mating
No species-specific courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Oxynoemacheilus mesudae in the sources available. Across the genus, breeding is understood to follow a simple, unadorned pattern: males become mildly territorial as the breeding season approaches, and spawning is prompted by rising water levels in spring to early summer, consistent with the seasonal flushes typical of Anatolian spring-fed streams.
There is no evidence of pairing, courtship displays, or any complex mate-selection behaviour in this genus — Oxynoemacheilus loaches are broadcast spawners rather than pair-forming fish, and nothing in the source material suggests this species departs from that picture.
Breeding
Oxynoemacheilus mesudae is, so far as the record shows, an egg-scattering species with no parental care, matching the pattern documented for the genus: eggs are released over gravel and sandy bottoms in flowing water, fertilised externally, and left to develop unattended. Larvae are reported to feed initially on their yolk sac before juveniles shift onto small invertebrates as they grow.
This species has not been bred, or apparently even kept, in the aquarium hobby — it is a narrow-range spring endemic documented through ichthyological field surveys rather than through fishkeeping. As with the great majority of stone and brook loaches, the honest statement is that captive breeding data simply does not exist for it.
In the aquarium
Oxynoemacheilus mesudae is not a fish encountered in the aquarium trade; the material available on it comes entirely from scientific surveys of its native springs, not from hobbyist keeping. Any care approach would have to be extrapolated cautiously from the genus rather than from direct experience with the species.
Genus-typical care would call for cool, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over a gravel or stone substrate — never a warm, still tropical setup, which would be the wrong environment for a fish from cold Anatolian springs. Like other nemacheilids it is presumably near-scaleless and would be expected to share the group's sensitivity to copper and full-strength medications, warranting gentle, reduced-dose treatment if ever kept. Given how little is documented, and that this is a highly range-restricted wild population, it should not be regarded as an aquarium candidate — collection pressure on a four-spring endemic would be a serious conservation concern.
Conservation
Oxynoemacheilus mesudae is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Endangered (EN), reflecting its status as a true single-basin endemic recorded from only four springs feeding the Lake Işıklı basin. Small-stream and spring endemics of this kind are characteristically vulnerable to exactly the pressures affecting Anatolian freshwater systems generally: groundwater extraction, spring modification, agricultural water use, and pollution, any of which can degrade or eliminate a habitat measured in a handful of discrete sites.
There is no indication in the available sources of this species being targeted by the aquarium trade, so its conservation risk is a habitat story rather than a collection story — the survival of the species is tied directly to the health of the specific springs it depends on in the Büyük Menderes drainage.
