Oxynoemacheilus muefiti is a small stone loach described in 2019 from the upper Murat River drainage in eastern Turkey, part of the Euphrates system. Like the great majority of its genus it is known from a narrow stretch of cool, fast, gravel-bottomed river and has never entered the aquarium trade — this is a data-sparse, recently described species rather than a hobby fish, and the honest picture of it is what taxonomists have recorded rather than what keepers have observed. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family, whose members are bold, benthic micro-predators of clear, oxygen-rich running water across Eurasia.

Taxonomy & naming

Oxynoemacheilus muefiti was described in 2019 by Jörg Freyhof, Cüneyt Kaya, Davut Turan and Matthias Geiger in Zootaxa, as part of the ongoing revision of Turkish and Anatolian stone loaches that has split the old, catch-all Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus complex into a number of narrower genera, Oxynoemacheilus among them. The species epithet honours Müfit Özuluğ of Istanbul, recognised by the authors for his long-standing support of their research.

The holotype was collected from the Murat River at Ballıbostan, Ağrı province, Turkey, with paratypes (seven specimens, 1.5–2.5 in SL) from the Murat at Taşlıçay, both in the upper Euphrates drainage. The Catalog of Fishes governs the valid combination, and the genus Oxynoemacheilus sits within the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, a group that has undergone heavy taxonomic reshuffling in recent decades as older wide genera like Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split along regional and morphological lines. O. muefiti is most similar to O. ercisianus, from which it is distinguished by a more slender body and a shallower dorsal adipose crest.

Morphology

Oxynoemacheilus muefiti is a small, elongate stone loach, reaching a maximum recorded length of about 3 in SL — modest even by the standards of a genus built from small-bodied stream fish. Like other members of Nemacheilidae it carries a slender, cylindrical body suited to holding position in current, and, where the group's diagnostic features apply, a near-scaleless skin that leaves it more exposed to medications and to disease than a fully scaled fish.

The original description separates it from its closest relative, O. ercisianus, principally by body proportions: O. muefiti is more slender-bodied and has a shallower adipose crest along the dorsal ridge. Beyond the type material — the holotype and seven paratypes measured by Freyhof and colleagues — little further morphological detail has been published, and no aquarium or field photography of live colouration appears in the available literature; this is a case where the honest answer is that the species is known almost entirely from preserved museum specimens.

Habitat

The species is known from the upper Murat River drainage, a major tributary of the Euphrates in eastern Turkey (Ağrı province), including a tributary reaching toward the Atatürk reservoir. Stone loaches of this genus are stream-bed specialists of fast-flowing, clear, well-oxygenated water running over gravel and stone — the classic upland habitat that gives the family its common name of stone or brook loaches.

Water in the Nemacheilidae's typical habitat runs cool rather than warm, with the family generally recorded around pH 7.0–7.7 and cool temperate conditions near 64 °F — a sharp contrast to the warm, soft, blackwater rivers favoured by many tropical loach groups. O. muefiti should be read in that light: a cool-water, current-loving fish of a specific Anatolian river system, not a warm-tropical species.

Feeding

As a member of Nemacheilidae, O. muefiti is presumed to follow the family's general pattern: a benthic micro-predator that forages over gravel and stone for small invertebrates, insect larvae and crustaceans in fast-flowing water. No species-specific dietary study has been published for O. muefiti itself, so this description rests on the documented biology of its family rather than direct observation of this species.

Were the species ever kept, the expectation drawn from its relatives is a fish that would take small live and frozen foods and sinking preparations readily, but might ignore flake floating at the surface, consistent with its bottom-oriented, current-swept way of life.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Oxynoemacheilus muefiti; the species is known only from its type series and description. Data on reproduction in this species is sparse to the point of being effectively absent from the literature.

Breeding

Nothing has been published on the breeding of Oxynoemacheilus muefiti specifically. Drawing on the general biology of Nemacheilidae, stone and brook loaches are egg-scatterers: ripe fish release adhesive eggs into crevices among stones and gravel in fast water, with no parental care, and breeding in the wild is generally triggered by seasonal changes in water level and temperature during the rainy season. Such species are rarely bred in captivity, and O. muefiti — never established in the aquarium trade — has no captive breeding record at all. The honest summary here is data-sparse: assume an egg-scattering, no-parental-care mode typical of its family, but treat any specifics as inferred rather than observed.

In the aquarium

Oxynoemacheilus muefiti is not an aquarium fish. It has no history in the trade, no care reports, and is known to science only from a short type series collected from its native Murat River drainage in eastern Turkey. There is nothing here to recommend or caution on in the way a hobby profile normally would.

What can be said, extrapolated from its genus and family, is that any small Nemacheilidae stone loach from this kind of habitat would need cool, clean, fast-moving, highly oxygenated water over a gravel substrate to have any chance of thriving outside its river — the opposite of a warm, still community tank — and, being effectively scaleless like most of its relatives, would be expected to be sensitive to copper-based and full-strength medications. These are inferences from the family, not observations of this species, and should be read as such.

Conservation

Oxynoemacheilus muefiti has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List; we record it as Not Evaluated rather than assign a guessed status. As a species described only in 2019 from a limited stretch of the Murat River (Euphrates drainage) in eastern Turkey, it is exactly the kind of narrow-range stream endemic that is common across the genus and that tends to remain data-deficient or unassessed for years after description.

No population trend, threat assessment or trade data exists for this species. Given the general pressures facing Anatolian and Middle Eastern freshwater systems — damming, water abstraction and habitat alteration along rivers like the Euphrates and its tributaries — a narrow-range species of this kind would be a reasonable conservation-attention candidate, but that is a general inference about its region, not a documented finding about O. muefiti itself.
