Taxonomy & naming
Oxynoemacheilus paucilepis was described in 2007 by Turkish ichthyologists Fahrettin Erk'Akan, Türker Nalbant and Cüneyt Özeren, part of a wave of species-level splitting that has reshaped the once-catch-all genus Noemacheilus/Nemacheilus across the western Palaearctic. It sits in Oxynoemacheilus, a genus of small stone loaches distributed from Albania in the west to central Iran in the east, and in the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea.
The species epithet paucilepis alludes to the pattern and distribution of the fish's scales, a taxonomic character used to separate it from closely related Anatolian and Euphrates-drainage congeners. As with much of this genus, the boundaries between similar-looking Oxynoemacheilus species rest on fine anatomical and meristic differences rather than obvious external features, and the group continues to be revised; the Catalog of Fishes is the reference to follow for the currently accepted name.
Morphology
This is a small loach even by stone-loach standards: males reach about 3 in standard length and females about 2.5 in SL, figures that put it toward the diminutive end of Oxynoemacheilus. Like other members of the genus it has an elongate, cylindrical body, a flattened head and belly suited to life on the streambed, and the small barbels typical of benthic nemacheilids used to feel out food in the gravel.
Detailed external diagnostic features are technical and largely a matter for the original description and later genus reviews rather than casual observation; data on this specific population's colouration and fin markings are sparse in the sources available here. As in other Nemacheilidae, the skin carries only fine, often barely visible scales rather than heavy body armour, which matters for how the fish should be handled and medicated.
Habitat
Oxynoemacheilus paucilepis is a narrow-range endemic of the Euphrates headwaters in eastern Anatolia, Turkey, known from the Mancilik, Cetinkaya and Kalkam streams. These are small streams with gravel beds and a moderately fast current — classic stone-loach water, clear and well-oxygenated rather than slow or vegetated, and cool-to-subtropical rather than warm tropical in character.
The species' entire known distribution is a cluster of small tributary streams, not a river system in the broad sense, which is precisely why it is vulnerable: anything that degrades one stream reach — abstraction, siltation, damming, drought — can affect a meaningful share of the total population. It is a genuinely data-sparse fish outside of this handful of localities.
Feeding
Oxynoemacheilus paucilepis is reported at trophic level around 2.8, consistent with an omnivorous micro-predator that takes a mix of small invertebrates and organic material off the streambed. Like its stone-loach relatives it almost certainly forages by picking through gravel and sediment for insect larvae, small crustaceans and other benthic invertebrates, supplementing this with algae and detritus.
No aquarium feeding data exist for this species given the absence of a hobby trade, but the safe inference from its genus and habitat is a benthic micro-predator diet: small live and frozen invertebrate foods and sinking preparations taken at the substrate, with little interest in food that stays in the water column.
Mating
No dimorphism or courtship behaviour has been documented for this species in the sources reviewed here; data are sparse. Stone loaches in this genus are not known for pronounced sexual dimorphism outside of the size difference already noted — males reaching slightly larger than females in this species — and reproduction in the wild is presumed to follow the general Nemacheilidae pattern of stream-bed spawning tied to seasonal conditions rather than any elaborate pairing display.
Breeding
As in most Nemacheilidae, Oxynoemacheilus paucilepis is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water, with no parental care afterward. There is no record of this species being bred in captivity — it essentially does not appear in the aquarium trade — and even wild reproductive biology has not been closely studied; the honest position is that breeding data for this species are sparse to nonexistent.
In the aquarium
Oxynoemacheilus paucilepis is not an aquarium fish in any practical sense: it is a narrow Anatolian endemic with no established ornamental trade, and this profile exists mainly to document the species rather than to recommend keeping it. Should material ever reach a keeper's hands — for example through legitimate scientific or conservation channels — the clear implication of its habitat is a cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated, flowing setup over gravel, not a warm still community tank; stone loaches from cool streams generally fare poorly in typical tropical aquarium conditions.
As with other Nemacheilidae, the fine scalation of stone loaches means any medication should be approached cautiously and at reduced strength rather than assumed safe at full tropical-fish doses. Given the complete absence of a trade and the species' conservation status, keeping this fish is neither realistic nor appropriate outside of research contexts.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Oxynoemacheilus paucilepis as Endangered (EN) in 2013. The assessment notes that the species was extirpated from its type locality, the Mancilik stream, by 2008, though it remained abundant at another locality on the same stream system as of 2009 — a stark illustration of how quickly a single-stream endemic can lose ground.
With its entire known range confined to a few small headwater streams of the Euphrates in eastern Anatolia, the species is inherently exposed to any local pressure — water abstraction, drought, siltation or stream modification — that touches those specific reaches. There is no aquarium trade in this species, so the threats it faces are habitat-driven rather than collection-driven.
