Oxynoemacheilus samanticus was described by Petru Bănărescu and Theodore Nalbant in 1978, part of a wave of Anatolian stone-loach descriptions the two authors produced as they worked through Turkey's fragmented river systems. The type locality is a tributary to the Samanti, between Pınarbaşı and Sarız, in the Seyhan basin of southern Turkey — the source of the species name, samanticus.
The genus Oxynoemacheilus is one of several segregates carved out of the old, catch-all Noemacheilus/Nemacheilus complex as ichthyologists reorganised the stone loaches of the Middle East, Anatolia and the Caucasus through the late 20th and early 21st centuries; some older sources may still list this fish under Noemacheilus or Nemacheilus, but the current, Catalog-of-Fishes-recognised combination is Oxynoemacheilus samanticus, in the family Nemacheilidae — by species count, the largest family of loaches.
Morphology
As a member of Oxynoemacheilus, this is a small, slender, cylindrical loach shaped for holding position in current: a rounded head, small mouth set for picking food from gravel, and reduced, deeply embedded scales typical of the family.
