Taxonomy & naming
Oxynoemacheilus sarus was formally described in 2021 by Jörg Freyhof, Cüneyt Yoğurtçuoğlu and Cüneyt Kaya, in a paper placing it within Nemacheilidae, the stone loach family — by species count the largest family of loaches, with hundreds of small stream-dwelling species distributed across Eurasia. The genus Oxynoemacheilus is one of several segregates carved in recent decades out of the old, overly broad Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus complex, a reshuffling that has touched most of the family and is still being refined; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for which combination is currently valid, and it recognizes Oxynoemacheilus sarus.
The species was described alongside comparisons to its closest relatives: genetic (COI barcode) divergence of 3.6–3.8% separates it from Oxynoemacheilus euphraticus and O. shehabi, and it occurs in sympatry with two other recently described Anatolian congeners, O. seyhanicola and O. evreni. Diagnostic features cited in the description include irregular blotches along the midline of the body, three to five dark bands crossing the caudal fin, a complete lateral line, and a forked tail — details that separate it from its close relatives in a genus where many species look superficially alike.
Morphology
Oxynoemacheilus sarus is a small, slender, cylindrical loach reaching a maximum recorded standard length of only about 2 in — modest even by the standards of a family built almost entirely of small fish. Like its Nemacheilidae relatives it has a countershaded, mottled body suited to lying still on gravel and cobble: pale below, patterned above with irregular dark blotches running along the flank, and several dark crossbars on the caudal fin that help distinguish it from closely related species in the same rivers.
As a nemacheilid it lacks the erectile suborbital spine that defines the botiid loaches (clown, yoyo, zebra and kin); stone and brook loaches instead rely on a low, flattened, well-camouflaged body and quick reflexes to avoid predators in open, current-swept water. Like nearly all loaches its skin carries small, deeply embedded scales rather than large exposed ones, leaving it comparatively naked and, as in the wider group, likely sensitive to heavy medication and poor water quality — though this has not been specifically tested in this species.
Habitat
The species is known only from the lower Ceyhan and Seyhan drainages of southern Anatolia, Turkey — two river systems draining to the Mediterranean near Adana. Its original description places it in small, fast-flowing stream and river habitat over rock, gravel and sand, the typical setting for Oxynoemacheilus and its stone-loach relatives across the genus's range from the Balkans and Anatolia through the Middle East.
This is cool-to-mild running water, not the warm, still, blackwater conditions associated with many South American or Southeast Asian aquarium fish. Stone and brook loaches generally favor well-oxygenated, current-swept stretches with a firm substrate of gravel, cobble and sand, and O. sarus fits that pattern; no separate population or seasonal-habitat data beyond the type description is available at this time.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study of Oxynoemacheilus sarus exists, but the feeding ecology of Nemacheilidae as a family is well established and almost certainly applies here: these are benthic micro-predators that forage along the streambed for small invertebrates, using barbels around the mouth to detect prey by touch in the gravel and detritus. Chironomid (midge) larvae, gammarid amphipods and other small aquatic insects and crustaceans make up the bulk of the diet in related, better-studied species such as the European stone loach Barbatula barbatula.
In captivity, fish of this build and habit typically accept small sinking live and frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, chopped invertebrates — readily, but often show little interest in flake or foods that stay at the surface. Feeding should target the bottom, matching the fish's natural foraging behavior.
Mating
No description of courtship or spawning behavior for Oxynoemacheilus sarus has been published; the original description is a taxonomic paper focused on morphology and genetics, not reproductive biology. Data on this point is sparse, as it is for the great majority of the family's several hundred species.
What is known for Nemacheilidae broadly is that reproduction is not tied to elaborate pairing or nest-building: stone and brook loaches are egg-scatterers, releasing eggs into the current over gravel or sand rather than forming pair bonds or defended territories. There is no reason from the available evidence to expect O. sarus to differ from this pattern, but nothing about its specific mating behavior has been documented in the wild or in captivity.
Breeding
As with the rest of Nemacheilidae, Oxynoemacheilus sarus is presumed to be an egg-scatterer: eggs are released over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water and receive no parental care once laid. This is the standard reproductive mode across the stone and brook loaches, in contrast to the cave-guarding males of gobies or the mouthbrooding seen in some cichlids — patterns that do not apply anywhere in this family.
There is no record of Oxynoemacheilus sarus being bred in the aquarium, and this is unsurprising: it was only described in 2021, has no established aquarium presence, and stone loaches as a group are rarely bred in captivity even where they are occasionally kept. Data on this species' breeding biology — spawning season, egg number, incubation time — is simply not available, and it should be treated as essentially unknown rather than assumed to follow any other family's pattern.
In the aquarium
Oxynoemacheilus sarus has no established presence in the aquarium hobby; it is a recently described, geographically narrow endemic with no evident trade history, and this entry is written from its taxonomic description and the general biology of its family rather than from care reports specific to the species. Any fish that did reach a tank should be treated as a coolish, current-loving micro-predator: given its small size and the family's normal habitat, a setup with a firm gravel or sand substrate, strong water movement, high dissolved oxygen and cool-to-moderate temperatures would follow the pattern of related stone and brook loaches, rather than the warm, still-water setup suited to many tropical community fish.
As with other scaleless or near-scaleless loaches, caution with copper-based and full-strength medications is a sound general precaution even though it has not been specifically documented for this species. Given how little is known, anyone encountering this fish in the trade should treat it as a specialist, research-grade animal rather than a standard community loach.
Conservation
Oxynoemacheilus sarus has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category here; it is recorded as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. Described only in 2021 from a restricted range in the lower Ceyhan and Seyhan drainages of southern Anatolia, it is exactly the kind of narrow-range stream endemic that tends to go unassessed for years after description.
Anatolia's stone loach fauna as a whole has been subject to intense recent taxonomic splitting, with many newly recognized species — including O. sarus's close relatives O. seyhanicola and O. evreni — restricted to single river systems under pressure from damming, water abstraction and pollution common across the region's Mediterranean-draining rivers. No population trend or specific threat data has been published for this species, and its conservation status should be treated as genuinely unknown pending formal assessment.
