Oxynoemacheilus simavicus is a small, little-known stone loach found only in and around the Simav stream, a tributary of the Gediz River in western Anatolia, Turkey. It is a classic Nemacheilidae micro-predator — a slim, near-scaleless bottom-dweller of fast, clear, oxygen-rich water, hunting aquatic insect larvae among stones and gravel. Confined to a tiny native range that has never supported an aquarium trade, it is assessed as Critically Endangered, squeezed by water extraction and pollution in the single watershed it calls home.

Taxonomy & naming

Oxynoemacheilus simavicus was described in 1978 by Balik and Bănărescu, and for much of its taxonomic history circulated under the older combination Barbatula simavica — a synonym still occasionally seen in older literature and databases. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea and one that has been extensively reshuffled as ichthyologists split the old catch-all genera Noemacheilus and Nemacheilus into a long list of narrower genera, Oxynoemacheilus among them.

The species sits within the Oxynoemacheilus bergianus species group, a cluster of closely related western Anatolian stone loaches distinguished mainly by fine anatomical and molecular characters rather than by obvious external differences. As with many Nemacheilidae, the group has been the subject of ongoing taxonomic revision, and the Catalog of Fishes remains the authority for the currently valid name and combination.

Morphology

Like other members of its genus, Oxynoemacheilus simavicus is a small, elongate, laterally compact loach built for life clinging to stones in current rather than for open swimming. Recorded sizes run from about 2–3 in standard length, with body mass in the range of roughly 0.6 to 2.5 grams — a genuinely tiny fish even by stone-loach standards. As in the wider family, the skin is effectively naked, carrying only small, deeply embedded scales, which leaves it — like its relatives — sensitive to disease and to full-strength medication.

Detailed colour pattern and fin-ray counts for this species are not covered in the sources consulted here, and given how narrowly it has been studied, much of its fine anatomy remains data-sparse outside the primary taxonomic literature. It is known to occur alongside a close congener, O. theophilii, in the same Simav drainage, underscoring how finely divided this species group is across neighbouring Anatolian streams.

Habitat

Oxynoemacheilus simavicus is endemic to the Simav stream, a tributary of the Gediz River system in western Anatolia, Turkey, with more recent work suggesting its range may extend into the neighbouring Sakarya drainage (including the Büyük Melen River) and possibly adjacent coastal streams. It lives in fast-flowing, clear, oxygen-rich rocky streams, staying benthic among stones and gravel rather than in open water or dense vegetation.

No precise temperature or pH data for the species were found in the sources consulted, but Anatolian stream loaches of this kind typically inhabit cool to cool-temperate, spring-fed or upland running water rather than warm, still conditions — this is not a tropical blackwater fish. Given the data gap, keepers and researchers should treat any specific water-chemistry figures as inferred from the wider genus rather than confirmed for this species.

Feeding

This is a benthic micro-predator, taking small aquatic invertebrates off the stream bed rather than grazing algae or biofilm. Documented gut contents are dominated by aquatic insect larvae — chironomid midge larvae, mayfly (Ephemeroptera) nymphs and caddisfly (Trichoptera) larvae feature prominently — reflecting its life in fast, clear, insect-rich Anatolian streams.

No aquarium feeding behaviour has been documented for this species, since it has essentially no presence in the hobby. Based on its wild diet and its close relatives in Nemacheilidae, it would be expected to take small live and frozen invertebrate foods readily and to show little interest in flake, but this is inference from the genus rather than an observed fact for O. simavicus.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Oxynoemacheilus simavicus specifically. Sexual dimorphism has not been described in the sources consulted, and given how little attention this narrow endemic has received outside taxonomic surveys, that gap is not surprising.

Stone and brook loaches in Nemacheilidae as a group are not known for elaborate courtship; where their reproduction has been studied, spawning is a simple matter of ripe adults releasing eggs over gravel in flowing water, with no pairing display or nest-building reported. There is no reason from the available evidence to expect this species to differ from that pattern, but it should be read as an inference from the family, not a direct observation.

This species has never been bred in captivity as far as the sources consulted show, and it should not be expected to appear in the trade — it is a narrow-range wild endemic under conservation pressure, not a commercially available fish. Any future account of its reproduction would need to come from field studies of the wild population rather than aquarium observation.

In the aquarium

Oxynoemacheilus simavicus has no meaningful aquarium hobby history; it is not traded and there is no husbandry literature to draw on. It is not a species a keeper is likely to encounter, and this article does not recommend it as an aquarium fish — its conservation status alone argues strongly against any collection for the trade.

What can be said, by extension from its genus and family, is that stone loaches of this build are cool-water, high-flow, high-oxygen specialists that would need well-oxygenated, moving water and a stony substrate to do well, and — like other near-scaleless Nemacheilidae — would likely be sensitive to copper and full-strength medications. These are inferences from related species, not documented facts about O. simavicus itself.

Conservation

Oxynoemacheilus simavicus is assessed as Critically Endangered, a status corroborated across multiple sources though a specific IUCN assessment year and numeric species page were not recoverable from the material consulted. The rationale centres on its extremely restricted range — confined essentially to the Simav stream and possibly a handful of neighbouring drainages — combined with active threats of water extraction (largely for irrigation) and pollution degrading that single watershed.

There is no evidence of any aquarium-trade pressure on this species; its threats are entirely habitat-driven, tied to how the Simav stream and its surroundings are used and altered. As a single-stream endemic with no wider distributional buffer, it illustrates a pattern common among Anatolian Nemacheilidae: species known from one or a few watercourses whose fate rests entirely on local water management rather than any global driver.
