Taxonomy & naming
Francis Day described this fish in 1872 as Nemacheilus aureus, based on material from Jabalpur on the Narmada River in central India. For much of the following century it was treated as a synonym or a poorly-differentiated population within the wider "zipper loach" complex now split between the genera Acanthocobitis and Paracanthocobitis. Singer & Page's 2015 revision of that complex removed it from synonymy and re-established it as a distinct, valid species, placing it in Paracanthocobitis — the genus of stone loaches erected for species formerly lumped under Nemacheilus and Acanthocobitis.
The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the currently valid combination, Paracanthocobitis aurea (Day, 1872). It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, and one where genus-level reshuffling of old "Nemacheilus" and "Noemacheilus" material into segregate genera such as Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and Paracanthocobitis has been common as taxonomists work through a very large, under-studied radiation.
Morphology
Paracanthocobitis aurea is a small, elongate nemacheilid loach built on the same slim, near-cylindrical plan as its stone-loach relatives — a body shaped for holding position on the bed of a running stream rather than for open water. Adults are distinguished by dark bars that run from the dorsal saddles down onto the lower side of the body, a pattern noted as a key field character for the species. The specific epithet aurea comes from Latin for "golden," and refers specifically to the orange colouring of the fins and barbels rather than to the body ground colour.

As a nemacheilid stone loach, it fits the profile shared across the family: a bottom-dwelling fish of clear, flowing, well-oxygenated streams and rivers rather than still or heavily vegetated water. No specific temperature or chemistry data for this species were found in the cache, so the water parameters given here are inferred conservatively from its family and its subtropical-to-Himalayan-foothill range rather than from a direct measurement, and should be treated as a starting point rather than a verified figure.
Feeding

A keeper who does encounter this species should provide a current-swept tank with a hard substrate to forage over, good filtration for oxygen and water quality, and should not expect a large showpiece fish — nemacheilids are generally modest in size. Because so little is documented about this particular species' maximum size or exact temperament, err on the side of a spacious, well-oxygenated setup with other calm bottom and stream-dwelling tankmates rather than assuming it fits a standard community tank.
