Taxonomy & naming
Paracanthocobitis adelaideae was described by Singer & Page in 2015 in their revision of the "zipper loaches," the paper that untangled Acanthocobitis and Paracanthocobitis and added five new species to the latter genus. It was published in Copeia 103(2): 378–401. The holotype is USNM 378387, collected from the type locality: a stream in Myanmar's Irrawaddy River basin (Kha Wan stream, approximately 25.086°N, 96.97°E). The species epithet honors Adelaide Singer, the daughter of the paper's first author.
It belongs to family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest family of true loaches, with hundreds of small, similar-looking, fast-water species spread across Eurasia. Genus-level boundaries in this group have shifted repeatedly as older catch-all genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split; Paracanthocobitis itself was only clearly separated from Acanthocobitis in the 2015 revision that described this species, and the Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the current combination, Paracanthocobitis adelaideae.
Morphology
As a member of Nemacheilidae, Paracanthocobitis adelaideae has the classic stone-loach build: a small, slender, cylindrical to slightly compressed body, a flattened head and underslung mouth suited to picking food from the streambed, and barbels around the mouth for feeling out prey in the substrate. The common name Checkerboard Zipper Loach points to its most distinctive feature — a broken, tessellated or checkerboard-like pattern of dark blotches running along the flanks, in contrast to the more continuous banding or zippered striping of some related species.
Like other nemacheilids it carries a small, erectile suborbital spine near the eye and has minute or reduced scales, leaving the skin close to naked — a feature shared across true loaches that makes them quick to absorb dissolved compounds through the skin, medications included. Detailed size data for this species has not surfaced in the sources available; stone loaches in this genus and family are generally small, typically well under 4.5 in, and there is no reason from the record to expect this species to be an exception, though a firm maximum length is not established here.
Habitat
The type locality is a stream in the Irrawaddy River basin of Myanmar, and the species is known only from this general area — a small, fast-flowing, clear headwater or tributary stream typical of the kind of cool, oxygen-rich habitat that stone loaches specialize in. Like most Nemacheilidae, it is a benthic fish of running water, holding station against current on and among stones, gravel and coarse substrate rather than drifting in open water or still pools.
Range and habitat data beyond the original description are sparse — this is a narrow-range stream endemic known from limited collecting, and no broader survey of its ecology has been located in the available sources. That narrowness is itself a meaningful fact: like many nemacheilids, it appears to be tied to a specific, limited stretch of flowing water rather than distributed across a wide river system.
Feeding
Stone and brook loaches of this family are bottom-foraging micro-predators, working fast-water substrates for small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae (notably chironomid midge larvae), other insects, and small crustaceans — picked from among stones and gravel with the aid of their sensory barbels. No feeding data specific to Paracanthocobitis adelaideae has been located, but this diet is characteristic of the genus and family and is a safe guide to its needs.
In the aquarium, a fish built along these lines should be offered small sinking foods rather than relying on flake at the surface: sinking pellets sized for a small loach, frozen bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia, and other small live or frozen invertebrate foods that reach the bottom where it forages.
Mating
No sexual dimorphism or courtship behaviour has been documented for Paracanthocobitis adelaideae in the sources available. Across Nemacheilidae generally, dimorphism is often subtle to absent, and courtship in the small number of species that have been observed to spawn tends to be a simple pursuit ending in egg release over the substrate, without any elaborate display. Nothing beyond that general family pattern can be stated for this species with confidence, and it should not be assumed to hold.
Breeding
There is no published or hobby record of Paracanthocobitis adelaideae being bred in captivity. Stone and brook loaches as a group are egg-scatterers: ripe fish release eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry. Spawning in this family is rarely observed even in the wild and only occasionally achieved in aquaria, typically in mature, well-established, flow-rich setups rather than as a deliberate, repeatable breeding effort.
For this species specifically, the honest picture is that breeding data is essentially absent — it is a narrow-range stream endemic described only in 2015, and nothing in the available sources suggests it has been kept, let alone spawned, in the hobby in any documented way.
In the aquarium
Paracanthocobitis adelaideae does not appear to be an established aquarium fish; it is not mentioned in the hobby-care sources consulted, and any specimens in the trade would likely arrive as incidental bycatch from wild collection in Myanmar rather than as a targeted export. Anyone keeping it should extrapolate carefully from its family and genus rather than from specific accounts of this species.
As a small nemacheilid stone loach, it should be treated as a cool-to-moderate, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated stream fish: strong filtration and current, a substrate of smooth gravel and stones it can wedge into, and stable, clean water. Being scaleless or near-scaleless like other true loaches, it would be expected to be sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications, warranting the same careful, reduced-dose approach used with other stone and botiid loaches. Given how little is known of this species' social needs, temperament and true adult size, a keeper should treat any care advice here as a cautious extrapolation, not a settled account.
Conservation
Paracanthocobitis adelaideae has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. It is known only from its Irrawaddy-basin type locality in Myanmar, a hallmark of the kind of narrow-range stream endemic that is common among newly described Nemacheilidae and that often remains data-sparse for years after description.
No specific threats or population trend have been documented for this species in the available sources. As with many small-range stream fish in the region, the general pressures facing Myanmar's freshwater habitats — deforestation, water extraction and stream modification — are the plausible long-term risks, but no assessment or targeted study exists to confirm impact on this particular population.
