Paracanthocobitis linypha is a small stone loach described in 2015 from a single stream in Myanmar, one of five new zipper-loach species named in a revision of the genera Acanthocobitis and Paracanthocobitis. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family and the group of slim, bottom-hugging "stone" or "brook" loaches built for cool, fast, oxygen-rich streams. It is known only from its type locality and close surrounding waters in the Irrawaddy, Sittang and Chindwin basins, and like many small stream nemacheilids its biology is genuinely data-sparse — it has no meaningful presence in the aquarium trade and has not been assessed for conservation status.

Taxonomy & naming

Paracanthocobitis linypha was described by Singer and Page in 2015 in their revision "Revision of the zipper loaches, Acanthocobitis and Paracanthocobitis (Teleostei: Nemacheilidae), with descriptions of five new species," published in Copeia 103(2):378–401. It was one of five species newly named in that paper, which untangled a genus long confused with Acanthocobitis and the broader wastebasket taxon Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus. The Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, lists it as a valid species in the family Nemacheilidae.

The genus Paracanthocobitis — the "zipper loaches," named for the thin, closely-set bars along the flank of many species — sits within Nemacheilidae, by far the largest and most species-rich loach family, encompassing the bulk of the small stream and brook loaches across Eurasia. As with many recent nemacheilid splits, older literature and any prior specimens from these Myanmar drainages would have been filed under a broader genus; linypha itself has always stood under Paracanthocobitis since its description, with no prior combination to note.

Morphology

This is a small, slender loach, reported to reach only about 1.5 in standard length — among the smaller nemacheilids, consistent with a fish restricted to a narrow headwater stream. The diagnostic feature, and the source of its species name, is its colour pattern: 10–14 thin, narrow dark bars cross the flank, each markedly narrower than the pale interspace between them — a needle-fine barring rather than the broad blotches or saddles seen in many congeners.

Like other nemacheilids it carries the small, erectile suborbital spine typical of the group, tucked in a groove beneath the eye, and the near-scaleless or fine-scaled skin shared across true loaches, which leaves it sensitive to strong medications and heavy metals. Beyond the original description's diagnosis, detailed morphometric and anatomical data for this species have not been compiled here; treat any finer point of body shape or fin formula as unconfirmed pending direct examination of the literature.

Habitat

Paracanthocobitis linypha is known from the Irrawaddy, Sittang and Chindwin river basins of Myanmar and Manipur, India, with its type locality at Kha Wan stream near Kha Wan, Myanmar. As a small nemacheilid restricted to headwater and tributary streams in this region, it almost certainly inhabits the same kind of habitat as its congeners and the wider stone-loach guild: cool-to-warm, clear, fast-flowing water over gravel and stone, well oxygenated by riffles and rapids.

No detailed habitat survey data (substrate composition, canopy cover, specific flow measurements) is recorded for this exact species in the sources consulted here, so those specifics should be treated as inferred from its relatives rather than confirmed. What is solid is the geography: this is an Old-World, mainland-Southeast-Asian stream endemic, not a lowland or still-water species.

Feeding

No feeding study has been published for Paracanthocobitis linypha specifically. Its close relative P. botia, the "zipper loach" of the aquarium trade, follows standard stone-loach ecology — foraging over gravel and stone for small aquatic invertebrates such as insect larvae and micro-crustaceans — and P. linypha, sharing the genus and a similar fast-stream habitat, most likely feeds the same way: as a benthic micro-predator picking small invertebrate prey from the current rather than grazing algae or biofilm.

In captivity, congeneric zipper loaches take small live and frozen foods (Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm) and sinking prepared foods readily but tend to ignore flake left to float. Given the lack of species-specific data, this should be read as a reasonable inference from genus-level husbandry rather than a documented fact for linypha itself.

Mating

No description of courtship, spawning behaviour or sexual dimorphism has been published for Paracanthocobitis linypha. Stream-dwelling nemacheilids in general show little external sexual dimorphism, and this species is no exception in the available literature — nothing beyond the original taxonomic diagnosis has been recorded. Data here is sparse to the point of absence, and any statement about pairing behaviour, courtship display or spawning triggers for this species would be guesswork rather than fact.

Breeding

There is no record of Paracanthocobitis linypha being bred in captivity, and stone and brook loaches of the family Nemacheilidae are, as a group, rarely bred in the aquarium hobby. Where breeding has been documented in related nemacheilids, the pattern is an egg-scatterer: ripe adults release eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no nest, no guarding and no parental care of any kind — there is no cave-spawning or mouthbrooding in this family.

Given this species' narrow, remote native range and complete absence from the aquarium trade, it is reasonable to say breeding.mode is egg-scattering over gravel by inference from its genus, but no direct spawning observation exists for linypha. This is an honest gap in the record rather than an oversight: most small stream-endemic nemacheilids described in the last two decades have never been kept, let alone bred, outside their native watershed.

In the aquarium

Paracanthocobitis linypha has no documented presence in the aquarium trade — it is a recently described (2015), narrow-range stream endemic from a small set of Myanmar and Manipur drainages, and there is no record here of it being collected, exported or kept by hobbyists. Any husbandry guidance must therefore be extrapolated cautiously from the wider Paracanthocobitis and Nemacheilidae care template rather than stated as established fact for this species.

Were it ever kept, the general stone-loach rules would apply: cool-to-moderate, clear, well-oxygenated, flowing water over gravel or stone rather than warm, still, soft blackwater; a near-scaleless body that calls for cautious, reduced-strength medication; and a diet of small sinking invertebrate foods rather than flake or heavy plant matter. At roughly 1.5 in maximum length it would be a genuinely small, unobtrusive fish suited to a modest stream-style setup, but this remains inference — there is no hobbyist track record to draw on.

Conservation

Paracanthocobitis linypha has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. As a small stream fish restricted to a handful of headwater drainages in Myanmar and Manipur, India, described only in 2015, it is exactly the kind of species that tends to go unassessed for years after description — geographically narrow, taxonomically recent, and with no commercial profile to draw conservation attention.

No population trend, threat assessment or trade data exists for this species in the sources reviewed here.
