Paracanthocobitis hijumensis is a small stone loach described only in 2022 from a single tributary of the upper Brahmaputra in Arunachal Pradesh, northeastern India. It belongs to the Nemacheilidae — the largest loach family, a sprawling group of slim, clear-water micro-predators that patrol fast, cool-to-warm Eurasian streams — and its full biology is still barely documented. What is known comes from the original type-series description and from its close relatives in the Paracanthocobitis botia complex: a bold, gravel-dwelling forager of running water that has never entered the aquarium hobby and has no recorded husbandry or breeding history.

Taxonomy & naming

Paracanthocobitis hijumensis was described in 2022 by Rime, Tamang and Das, placing it within the Paracanthocobitis botia species complex — a cluster of similar-looking stone loaches distributed across the Brahmaputra drainage and neighbouring Himalayan foothill systems that has been split into several distinct species only in recent years as researchers re-examined museum material and fresh type series. The genus Paracanthocobitis itself is a relatively recent segregate, erected to house species formerly lumped under the older, broader genus Nemacheilus (and, in some older literature, Acanthocobitis); the Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the current valid combination, and this article keeps the genus as published, Paracanthocobitis.

The species is distinguished from its closest relatives — including the larger-bodied members of the P. botia complex and the smaller P. zonalternans complex, whose members stay under about 2 in standard length — by a combination of an axillary pelvic-fin lobe, a complete lateral line, and a set of proportional measurements (predorsal distance, prepelvic distance, head length, body depth and eye diameter, all expressed as percentages of standard length) documented in the type description. As a species named in 2022, it has essentially no history outside the taxonomic literature; there is no established common name in English.

Morphology

Paracanthocobitis hijumensis is a small, slender stone loach, with the type series measuring 2–2.5 in standard length — placing it among the mid-sized members of its species complex, distinctly larger than the P. zonalternans group but modest even by the standards of its own family. Like other nemacheilids it has an elongate, sub-cylindrical body, a pointed snout with barbels for probing the substrate, and — where present in the genus — an erectile suborbital spine, a small defensive spine tucked in a groove below the eye that is a hallmark of many loach lineages.

Diagnostic proportions from the original description include a predorsal distance of 47.9–51.8% SL, a prepelvic distance of 52.3–58.8% SL, a head length of 23.8–26.0% SL, a body depth of 18.4–23.1% SL, and an eye diameter of 14.2–22.5% SL, with 9½ to 10½ branched dorsal-fin rays. As in most Nemacheilidae, the skin carries only tiny, deeply embedded scales, leaving the fish functionally near-scaleless — a trait that matters for disease susceptibility and medication sensitivity wherever loaches of this family are kept.

Habitat

The species is known only from its type locality, the Hijum River, a tributary of the upper Brahmaputra River in West Siang District, Arunachal Pradesh, in the Himalayan foothills of northeastern India. This places it within the wider Brahmaputra drainage, a river system that drains the eastern Himalaya and is well known for a rich, still-incompletely-catalogued nemacheilid fauna of narrow-range stream endemics.

No specific habitat description beyond the type locality has been published for this species, but the genus and family are consistent: Nemacheilidae are stream fish of fast-flowing, clear, well-oxygenated Eurasian waters, typically over gravel and stone substrates. Its close relative Paracanthocobitis botia occupies the Brahmaputra mainstem and tributaries in Assam in loose aggregations over similar substrate, and it is reasonable to expect P. hijumensis to occupy comparable foothill stream habitat, though this has not been directly documented and should be treated as inference rather than confirmed fact.

Feeding

No diet study exists for Paracanthocobitis hijumensis specifically, but it can be inferred with reasonable confidence from its genus and family: like other nemacheilid stone loaches it is almost certainly a benthic micro-predator, foraging over stream substrate for small invertebrates. Its close relative P. botia feeds naturally on insect larvae such as chironomid midge larvae and mayfly nymphs, along with other small invertebrates picked from the streambed.

Where congeners have been kept, they take small live and frozen foods readily — Daphnia, Artemia and bloodworm — along with quality sinking foods, but tend to ignore flake, consistent with a fish that feeds by probing substrate rather than the water column. No aquarium feeding data exists for P. hijumensis itself, as the species has no known aquarium history.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Paracanthocobitis hijumensis. Data is sparse to non-existent: the species was described only in 2022 from preserved type material, and nothing is published about its reproductive behaviour in the wild or in captivity. Nemacheilidae as a family are understood to be egg-scatterers without pair-bonding or nest-building, and there is no reason to expect this species departs from that pattern, but this remains an inference from the family rather than an observation of the species.

Breeding

As with the rest of the Nemacheilidae, the presumed reproductive mode is egg-scattering over gravel and stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care — larvae and juveniles are thought to favour slower current and sandy margins before shifting to fast water and coarse substrate as they mature, a pattern documented across the family. No spawning of Paracanthocobitis hijumensis has been recorded in captivity, and indeed the species has no known aquarium history at all.

Even its better-known congener P. botia is not commercially bred; aquarium stock of that species is entirely wild-caught. For a stream endemic described this recently, from a single tributary, and never reported in the trade, the honest picture is that breeding data simply does not exist — this is a case where "data sparse" is the correct and complete answer rather than a gap to be filled with speculation.

In the aquarium

Paracanthocobitis hijumensis has no established aquarium presence and is not known to be traded; nothing published addresses its captive care. Any guidance here must be extrapolated cautiously from its genus and family, and should be read as a starting point for an adventurous keeper working from a wild-collected or research specimen rather than a proven care sheet.

Going by its close relative P. botia and by Nemacheilidae generally, a stone loach of this kind would want cool-to-moderate, clean, well-oxygenated, flowing water with a gravel or stone substrate and good current — a powerhead or strong filter outflow to replicate stream conditions — plus shelter among rocks. Like other nemacheilids it is likely to be a bold, active bottom-dweller that does best in a loose group rather than alone. Being effectively scaleless, loaches in this family are typically sensitive to copper and to full-strength medication, so any treatment should be approached cautiously and at reduced dosing. Given the total absence of specific data, this species is not currently a realistic candidate for the hobby.

Conservation

Paracanthocobitis hijumensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List; as a species described only in 2022, it has simply not yet been through the assessment process, and its status here is recorded honestly as Not Evaluated rather than guessed at.

What is known of its range is a single tributary system — the Hijum River, part of the upper Brahmaputra drainage in Arunachal Pradesh — which by itself is a pattern that, in narrow-range stream fish generally, often correlates with elevated vulnerability to local pressures such as damming, siltation, deforestation and water extraction in Himalayan foothill catchments. No population trend, threat assessment or trade data exists for this species specifically, and none should be inferred beyond noting that single-locality endemism is worth future conservation attention once formal assessment work reaches it.
