Paracanthocobitis mooreh is a small, slender stone loach from the fast-flowing rivers of the Deccan Plateau in western and southern India, restricted to the Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri (Cauvery) river systems. It is one of the many quietly overlooked members of Nemacheilidae, the largest family of true loaches, and it earns its keep on the streambed rather than in the spotlight: a bold, torpedo-shaped micro-predator that patrols cool, oxygen-rich currents for small invertebrates. Very little has been published on its aquarium behaviour, and it has never been formally bred in captivity — the honest picture for a species that has drawn far more taxonomic attention than hobbyist attention.

Taxonomy & naming

Paracanthocobitis mooreh was first described by William Henry Sykes in 1839 as Cobitis mooreh, from the Mota Mola River at Poona (modern Pune) on the Deccan Plateau — the species' type locality. For much of the twentieth century it travelled under the combination Acanthocobitis mooreh, grouped with the other "zipper loaches" in that genus. A later taxonomic revision split the zipper loaches between Acanthocobitis and Paracanthocobitis, and the Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — now places this species in Paracanthocobitis.

It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches, by far the largest family of true loaches and one still being actively reshuffled as researchers work through its many superficially similar genera. Older aquarium literature and some database entries still list the fish as Acanthocobitis mooreh; both names refer to the same animal, but the current, valid combination is Paracanthocobitis mooreh.

Morphology

This is a small, elongated loach, reported to reach only about 2–3 in standard length — a genuinely diminutive fish even by stone-loach standards. The body is slender and rounded in cross-section, built for holding position in current rather than for bulk. Like many nemacheilids it carries small vertical blotches along the flank following the lateral line, and the caudal fin is crossed by four to five dark bands, a useful field mark against similar species sharing its rivers.

Diagnostically, the lateral line is incomplete, ending near the origin of the pelvic fins rather than running the full length of the body, and the species lacks an axillary pelvic lobe — details that separate it from close relatives in Acanthocobitis and Paracanthocobitis. As in other nemacheilids, the skin carries only small, deeply embedded scales, leaving it functionally near-scaleless, a point that matters for handling and medication.

Habitat

Paracanthocobitis mooreh is native to western and southern India, known from the Godavari, Krishna and Kaveri (Cauvery) river systems on and around the Deccan Plateau. Its type locality, the Mota Mola River near Poona, sits within this same coolwater upland drainage. As with most stone loaches, it lives on the bottom of flowing streams and rivers rather than in still water.

The species favours cool, clear, well-oxygenated water with a steady current — reported temperatures run from about 68–79 °F, distinctly cooler than the warm lowland rivers many aquarium loaches come from, and water chemistry is soft to moderately hard (roughly 36–215 ppm) with a pH around 6.0–7.5. In the aquarium this translates to a need for strong flow and high dissolved oxygen; several times the tank's own volume in turnover per hour is recommended to approximate the current it evolved in.

Feeding

This is a bottom-hunting micro-predator, foraging over the substrate of fast streams for small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrate prey swept along or hiding in the gravel. It is built to pick off small, quick-moving food items rather than graze algae or biofilm.

In the aquarium it will take sinking dried foods, but keepers are advised to supplement regularly with live or frozen fare — bloodworm, Artemia and Daphnia are all reported as accepted. A diet leaning on live and frozen invertebrate foods, offered where the fish can find it on the bottom, keeps this species closer to its natural feeding pattern than dried food alone.

Mating

Some external dimorphism has been noted: mature males are reported to be noticeably slimmer-bodied than females, which is the only sexing cue recorded for this species in available sources. Beyond that, little is documented about courtship or spawning behaviour in Paracanthocobitis mooreh specifically.

As with most small nemacheilids, spawning is presumed to follow the general stone-loach pattern — an unguarded scatter of eggs triggered by rising flow and cooler-season cues — but this has not been directly observed or recorded for this species, and it should not be assumed to hold in every detail.

Breeding

Breeding in Paracanthocobitis mooreh is unrecorded in captivity. Like the great majority of stone and brook loaches, it is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that broadcasts eggs over gravel or among stones in fast water with no parental care afterward, but no aquarium spawning has been documented to confirm the details for this species.

This is honestly a data-sparse area: the species has been described taxonomically and characterised for identification, but not studied or bred as an aquarium fish. Keepers should not expect to breed it, and any successful spawning would be a genuinely novel report worth documenting carefully.

In the aquarium

Paracanthocobitis mooreh is a small fish — well under 3 in — suited to a modestly sized aquarium provided the essentials of its native rivers are met: cool water, strong flow and high oxygenation rather than the warm, still conditions common in general community tanks. A fine, soft substrate over which it can forage, along with smooth gravel and stones to shelter among, suits its streamlined, bottom-hugging habits.

Being near-scaleless like other nemacheilids, it is likely sensitive to copper-based treatments and full-strength medications, so a cautious, half-dose approach is the safer default until more is known specifically about this species. Because so little aquarium-specific information exists, keepers taking this fish on should treat it as an experimental, specialist proposition — one for a dedicated coolwater or river-biotope setup rather than a general tropical community.

Conservation

Paracanthocobitis mooreh has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. This is a common situation for small Indian stream loaches with narrow, specific ranges — formal assessment has simply not been carried out.

Its distribution is restricted to three river systems on the Deccan Plateau, a region under real and ongoing pressure from damming, water abstraction and pollution associated with a densely populated part of India. In the absence of a formal assessment or trade data, no conservation status or trend can be responsibly claimed beyond noting that its narrow range makes it a plausible candidate for future concern.
