Taxonomy & naming
Paracanthocobitis putaoensis was described in 2023 by Lin, Chen, Myint & Chen in Zootaxa, based on specimens from the Mali Hka River, a headwater tributary of the Irrawaddy near the town of Putao in Kachin State, northern Myanmar — the source of its species epithet. It sits in the genus Paracanthocobitis, part of the family Nemacheilidae within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea.
Nemacheilidae has been heavily reshuffled over the past two decades — many species once lumped into a broad "Nemacheilus" or "Noemacheilus" have since been redistributed among genera such as Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and Paracanthocobitis on the basis of fin-ray counts, lateral-line completeness and head-pore patterns. The Mali Hka drainage and the wider Irrawaddy headwaters in Kachin State have proven to be a hotspot for this kind of fine-grained nemacheilid diversity, with new Schistura, Malihkaia and Paracanthocobitis species continuing to be described from its tributaries. P. putaoensis is one of these recent additions, and as a species named in 2023 it has not yet accumulated the broader taxonomic or ecological literature that older, better-known stone loaches have.
Morphology
The original description distinguishes Paracanthocobitis putaoensis from its congeners by a combination of an incomplete lateral line, a suborbital groove present in adult males, and a well-developed axillary pelvic lobe — the small fleshy flap at the base of the pelvic fin found in many nemacheilids. Beyond these diagnostic details the species fits the general stone-loach build shared across the genus: a slender, cylindrical body, a flattened head and underslung mouth suited to picking food off the streambed, and small, low-set eyes.
Like many Nemacheilidae, Paracanthocobitis species lack the large erectile suborbital spine that defines the true spined loaches (Cobitidae) and botiids — the suborbital groove noted in this species' males is a smaller, more subtle structure used in sexing rather than defence. The skin is thin and the scales, where present, are minute and deeply embedded, leaving stone loaches generally sensitive to poor water quality and heavy medication, a trait shared broadly across the family. A congener, P. botia, reaches around 4.5 in SL, but no confirmed maximum size has been published for P. putaoensis itself, and this article does not guess at one.
Habitat
The type locality is the Mali Hka River, a major tributary of the upper Irrawaddy near Putao in Kachin State, northern Myanmar — a fast-flowing headwater system draining the foothills of the eastern Himalaya. Stone loaches in this region typically hold in gravel- and boulder-bottomed reaches with strong current and high dissolved oxygen, sheltering among rocks and in the interstitial spaces of the streambed by day.
No detailed water-chemistry data has been published specifically for P. putaoensis, but the wider Nemacheilidae of this region are cool-to-temperate stream fish, and congeners such as P. botia are recorded from clear, fast-flowing rivers around 70–79 °F with pH near neutral (roughly 6.0–7.0). Given the species' Kachin State highland origin, cooler flowing water rather than warm, still conditions is the honest expectation, though this should be read as an inference from habitat and relatives rather than a measured fact for the species itself.
Feeding
No feeding study exists for Paracanthocobitis putaoensis specifically. Nemacheilid stone loaches as a group are benthic micro-predators, working fast, clear stream bottoms for small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae (particularly chironomids and mayfly/caddisfly nymphs), small crustaceans and worms — and this is the reasonable expectation for this species too, pending direct observation.
Were it kept in the aquarium, the expected approach would follow the rest of the genus: small sinking live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia, plus quality sinking pellets formulated for bottom feeders. Stone loaches of this kind generally show little interest in flake left to drift at the surface, since their whole foraging strategy is built around picking food directly off the substrate.
Mating
The species description notes a suborbital groove present only in adult males, which is likely the main external clue to sexing this fish, though no broader account of courtship or spawning behaviour has been published. Data on reproductive biology for P. putaoensis simply does not yet exist — it is too newly described and has not been kept or studied in a breeding context.
Across Nemacheilidae generally, spawning follows a simple pattern: adults scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs over gravel and among stones in flowing water, without nest-building or courtship display beyond basic pairing behaviour. There is no reason from what is known of the genus to expect anything more elaborate in this species, but this is inference from relatives, not a documented account of P. putaoensis itself.
Breeding
Stone and brook loaches of the family Nemacheilidae are, as a rule, egg-scatterers: ripe adults release eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, and there is no parental care of eggs or fry. Paracanthocobitis putaoensis has not, as far as published sources show, ever been bred in captivity — it has no established aquarium history at all, having been described only in 2023 from wild specimens.
This is the honest picture for the great majority of Nemacheilidae: most species are rarely or never spawned by hobbyists, and this species is no exception, with the added complication that its natural history and husbandry requirements are themselves still essentially unknown. Anyone encountering this fish in the trade — an unlikely but not impossible event given the pace of new nemacheilid exports from Myanmar — should treat it as an unbred, poorly understood species rather than assume conventional stone-loach spawning behaviour will simply happen.
In the aquarium
Paracanthocobitis putaoensis has no documented aquarium-keeping history, so any care guidance here is inference from its genus and family rather than direct experience with the species. Stone loaches of this kind generally do best in cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated, flowing water over a gravel or mixed sand-and-stone substrate, with strong filtration or a powerhead to replicate current from a fast headwater stream. A tight-fitting lid is standard practice for small nemacheilids, which are accomplished at finding any gap to escape through.
As with most Nemacheilidae, the thin skin and reduced scalation seen across the family suggest this species would be sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally, warranting the same caution applied to other stone loaches: half-doses and close observation rather than routine dosing. Given the total absence of husbandry data, and the fact that the type series comes from a specific, little-studied headwater tributary, this is not a species to buy on impulse — it is far better treated as one to watch for future information on than one to acquire today.
Conservation
Paracanthocobitis putaoensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List; it is Not Evaluated, and this article records that status honestly rather than guessing at a category. Species described this recently from a single known locality — here, the Mali Hka River near Putao in Kachin State — routinely start out unassessed simply because the formal review process has not yet reached them.
What is known is that the Irrawaddy headwaters of northern Myanmar are a region of exceptional, still-being-documented nemacheilid diversity, with narrow-range endemics being described from individual tributaries on a fairly regular basis. Species restricted to a single stream system are inherently vulnerable to local habitat disturbance — deforestation, mining, damming or pollution in the Kachin State headwaters — even without a formal threat assessment yet in place. There is no indication in the available sources of trade pressure on this species.
