Paracanthocobitis tumitensis is a tiny stone loach described in 2019 from a stream in Manipur, in the far northeast of India, and it illustrates just how fast-moving loach taxonomy can be: within a few years of its description, a follow-up study concluded that it is in fact a junior synonym of the earlier-named Paracanthocobitis marmorata. Whatever name it ultimately settles under, the fish itself is a classic Nemacheilidae species — a small, slim, bottom-hugging micro-predator built for cool, clear, fast-flowing water, and one of the countless narrow-range stream loaches from the Himalayan foothills that remain almost entirely undocumented outside the taxonomic literature.

Taxonomy & naming

Paracanthocobitis tumitensis was described by Arunkumar & Moyon in 2019, in the journal Species, from material collected in Manipur, in the hill country of northeastern India near the Indo-Myanmar border. It was placed in Paracanthocobitis, a genus carved in recent decades out of the old catch-all Nemacheilus/Noemacheilus loaches as taxonomists split that unwieldy assemblage along anatomical and genetic lines — a reshuffle that has touched most of the family and is still being worked out species by species.

A 2021 review by Kottelat & Vishwanath, published in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology, examined the type material and concluded that P. tumitensis is a junior synonym of Paracanthocobitis marmorata, an earlier-described species. The same paper also clarified a locality problem with P. marmorata itself: although it was originally described as coming from the Brahmaputra drainage in Manipur, the actual type locality appears to lie in the Irrawaddy (Chindwin) drainage, with the original label being in error. There is a further wrinkle in the description's publication history — it was first published online without ZooBank registration ahead of the printed edition, which under ICZN Article 8.5.3 raises a question over whether the name was validly available at first release. Because this synonymy is recent and the nomenclatural history is unsettled, this article treats the fish under its original name, Paracanthocobitis tumitensis, while noting that Catalog of Fishes users may find it cross-referenced to P. marmorata.

Morphology

Paracanthocobitis tumitensis is a small, slender stone loach in the classic Nemacheilidae mould: an elongate, only lightly compressed body, a blunt snout with barbels for probing the substrate, and the erectile suborbital spine typical of true loaches, tucked in a groove beneath the eye and flicked out defensively when the fish is handled. Like its relatives it carries very small, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin close to naked — a detail that matters for how sensitive the fish is to medication.

Direct data on P. tumitensis is sparse, but the closely related and better-documented senior name, P. marmorata, reaches only about 1.5 in standard length in females, among the smaller loaches covered on this site, and shows a marbled pattern of dark lines and blotches over a pale ground colour rather than a bold longitudinal stripe. Given the close taxonomic relationship, P. tumitensis is expected to fall in a similar small size class and share a broadly similar marbled or mottled patterning, though a confident species-level description of its live coloration is not available from the sources consulted here.

Habitat

The type locality is a stream in Manipur, in the hill country of northeastern India, with the surrounding drainage likely belonging to the Irrawaddy (Chindwin) system rather than the Brahmaputra as originally labelled. This places the species firmly in the fast, clear, cool-to-warm streams of the eastern Himalayan foothills — exactly the kind of habitat favoured by Paracanthocobitis generally, where related species occupy stretches of stream and small river with leaf litter, open sand and mixed cobbles, rocks and boulders, kept well oxygenated by continuous flow.

No site-specific water chemistry has been published for P. tumitensis itself. Based on documented conditions for close congeners such as P. botia, P. pictilis and P. urophthalma, the genus is generally found in water around 70–79 °F with a near-neutral pH of roughly 6.0–7.0 — cool-to-warm flowing stream water, not the warm, still, acidic blackwater some other loach groups favour. This is treated here as a genus-level estimate rather than a confirmed reading for this species.

Feeding

Paracanthocobitis species are benthic micro-predators, working the bottom of clear, fast streams for small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other tiny bottom-dwelling prey — rather than grazing algae or biofilm in the manner of hillstream loaches. This fits the broader pattern for stone and brook loaches in the family Nemacheilidae, which are typically active, opportunistic hunters of whatever small live food the current delivers to the streambed.

In the aquarium, related Paracanthocobitis species take readily to small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm and daphnia, along with sinking pellets and wafers, and may show little interest in flake left to float at the surface. No aquarium feeding data specific to P. tumitensis has been published, but the same micro-predator diet can be assumed with reasonable confidence given the genus's consistency on this point.

Mating

No description of spawning behaviour, courtship or sexual dimorphism has been published for Paracanthocobitis tumitensis, and this appears to be true for the great majority of species in the genus — a reflection of how recently many were described and how little aquarium or field observation exists for narrow-range Himalayan stream endemics. Stone and brook loaches in Nemacheilidae are not known for elaborate courtship; where breeding has been documented in the family at all, it typically follows the simple pattern of ripe fish releasing eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water, without pairing rituals or nest-building.

Given the absence of species-specific data, nothing further can honestly be said here about how P. tumitensis pairs or spawns beyond noting that it is expected to follow the broad Nemacheilidae pattern described under Breeding.

Breeding

As with most true loaches in the stone and brook loach family, Paracanthocobitis tumitensis is not known to have been bred in the aquarium, and no husbandry account of captive spawning has been published. The genus, and Nemacheilidae generally, are egg-scatterers: ripe adults release eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no nest, no guarding and no parental care of any kind afterward.

This is honestly a data-sparse area for the species. Rather than speculate about spawning triggers, egg counts or fry-rearing, the fair summary is that P. tumitensis almost certainly follows the scatter-and-abandon strategy typical of its relatives, but a confirmed home or farm spawning of this particular fish has not been documented in the sources available.

In the aquarium

Paracanthocobitis tumitensis is essentially unknown in the hobby, and this profile should be read as an extrapolation from its close relatives rather than direct aquarium experience. As a small stone loach it would suit a modest, well-oxygenated tank with a sandy or fine-gravel substrate, scattered cobbles and stones to mimic a streambed, and moderate-to-strong flow from the filter outlet rather than still water. Cooler, well-aerated conditions in the 70–79 °F range (inferred from related species) would be more appropriate than the warm, tropical setups typical for many other loaches.

As with all true loaches, the near-scaleless skin means sensitivity to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally — half-doses and gentle products are the safer default, and this species should be watched closely for early signs of ich, to which scaleless loaches are notably prone. Given how little is documented about this fish's social needs, keeping it in a group, as is standard good practice for small benthic loaches, is a sensible precaution even though it has not been specifically confirmed for this species. In practice, P. tumitensis is far more likely to be encountered in taxonomic literature than in a fish store.

Conservation

Paracanthocobitis tumitensis has not been evaluated on the IUCN Red List. Its very narrow known range — a single stream system in Manipur, India — combined with its very recent description and now-disputed taxonomic status as a possible synonym of P. marmorata, means it has essentially no formal conservation assessment history to draw on.

Small-range Himalayan foothill stream endemics of this kind are inherently vulnerable to habitat degradation, siltation and water diversion even where no formal assessment yet exists, simply because their entire known population may depend on a short, undocumented stretch of stream. No evidence of an aquarium trade in this species was found in the sources consulted; unlike widely traded loaches, it does not appear to be commercially collected.
