Taxonomy & naming
Paraprotomyzon multifasciatus was described by Pellegrin and Fang in 1935 from material collected in eastern Szechuan (now Sichuan), China. The genus Paraprotomyzon is placed within the family Balitoridae — specifically within the Gastromyzontidae subfamily or clade, the hillstream loaches whose flattened body plan is an adaptation to torrent-flow life on exposed rock surfaces. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for valid names in this group, and the combination Paraprotomyzon multifasciatus remains valid.
The Balitoridae have been subject to considerable taxonomic revision over the decades, with many genera formerly grouped under Homaloptera or broad catch-all names now reorganised into better-defined genera on morphological and molecular grounds. Paraprotomyzon is a small Chinese genus; species-level data for P. multifasciatus in particular are sparse in the English-language literature. The species epithet multifasciatus means 'many-banded', referring to the multiple dark body bars characteristic of the species.
Morphology
Paraprotomyzon multifasciatus shares the body plan common to all gastromyzontid hillstream loaches: the ventral surface is flattened, the pectoral and pelvic fins extend broadly to either side, and together the fin-fringe and flattened belly form a suction-disc that anchors the fish to rock in strong current. The body is slender and torpedo-shaped in dorsal view, the head depressed and pointed. Multiple dark transverse bands or bars cross the body — the feature named in the species epithet — against a paler ground colour.
The skin is covered in tiny, deeply embedded scales and is effectively naked to the touch, making this species, like other balitorids, sensitive to copper-based and other harsh medications. A suborbital spine is present — an erectile, defensive spine beneath the eye characteristic of many loach lineages; it readily snags in fine-mesh nets, so moving the fish by cup or container is advisable. Data on maximum size for this species specifically are sparse; typical gastromyzontid hillstream loaches fall in the 1.5–3 in standard length range.
Habitat
This species is endemic to eastern Sichuan and the lowland fringe of Tibet, China, placing it among the northernmost of the gastromyzontid hillstream loaches. Its habitat is fast-flowing, clear, well-oxygenated hill streams and mountain torrents, where the current is strong enough to scour rock surfaces clean and maintain dissolved oxygen near saturation. The substrate is bare rock, cobble and gravel; the water is cool, typically clear, and low in dissolved organic matter.
Paraprotomyzon multifasciatus is a strict rheophile — dependent on strong water movement and the oxygen it delivers. It is conspicuously absent from reaches affected by reservoir impoundment or flow reduction, where the current slackens, silt accumulates and oxygen levels drop. This sensitivity to hydrological alteration mirrors that of other hillstream loaches worldwide and highlights the species' dependence on intact, fast-flowing stream environments.
Feeding
Like other gastromyzontid hillstream loaches, Paraprotomyzon multifasciatus is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. It rasps diatoms, filamentous algae, periphyton and associated micro-invertebrates from the surface of submerged rocks using its specialized mouth and dentition. This is the same feeding mode that underpins the loach's flattened body plan: the suction-disc holds the fish in place on the rock face while the mouth grazes the biofilm layer.
In the aquarium, biofilm and green algae growing on mature rockwork are the primary food source. Without an established, algae-covered rockscape the fish cannot sustain itself and will slowly starve — the most common failure in keeping hillstream loaches. Supplementary foods should include algae wafers or discs, blanched vegetables (courgette, spinach, cucumber), and small frozen foods such as daphnia or finely chopped bloodworm. It is not a flake-eater and does not compete well at the surface; sinking, rock-adhered foods are what it can access.
Mating
Little is documented in the literature about the mating biology of Paraprotomyzon multifasciatus specifically. In hillstream loaches more broadly, the sexes are typically difficult to distinguish outside of breeding condition; females tend toward a fuller body depth, particularly when gravid, and males are sometimes slimmer. Whether this holds for the present species is not confirmed.
Spawning in gastromyzontid loaches is linked to seasonal conditions — water temperature, flow regime and photoperiod cues tied to spring and early summer in the species' native upland streams. Recreating these triggers in a home aquarium requires attention to seasonal temperature shifts, strong, well-oxygenated flow, and a mature, biofilm-rich rockscape that signals a suitable environment to conditioned fish.
Breeding
Paraprotomyzon multifasciatus is rarely if ever bred in home aquaria, and no documented captive spawnings are known in the English-language hobby literature. As a gastromyzontid hillstream loach, the likely breeding mode is egg-burying or egg-depositing among stones and gravel in fast current — a strategy used by a few better-studied hillstream species such as Sewellia lineolata, which can spawn in a mature, strongly-flowing river tank under good conditions, with eggs deposited among stones and ignored by adults thereafter (no parental care).
For most hillstream loach genera, including Paraprotomyzon, the honest picture is that captive breeding is rarely achieved and the trade relies entirely on wild-collected fish. Any keeper who believes they have achieved a spawning should document it carefully; such records are genuinely rare and valuable. The appropriate expectation is to enjoy these fish as long-lived specimens in a well-maintained, high-flow, biofilm-rich system, not to breed them.
In the aquarium
Paraprotomyzon multifasciatus is an advanced-level fish, appropriate for a keeper willing to replicate the conditions of a cool, fast Sichuan hill stream. The overriding requirements are cool, highly oxygenated water with strong, continuous current — a river tank or hillstream biotope setup is the most suitable format — and a fully mature rockscape densely colonised by biofilm, algae and diatoms. A bare, newly cycled tank or a warm, still community aquarium is likely to kill the fish within weeks through starvation and oxygen stress.
Temperature should be kept in the cool range, broadly 64–75 °F (65–75 °F), well below the warm tropical norm. Strong, turbulent surface agitation is essential for oxygenation; circulation pumps or powerheads pointed to create a circular flow over a rock-covered base are the standard approach. Water quality must be excellent — low nitrates and very low organic loading, as befits a species from the clear, nutrient-poor torrents of upland China. As with all near-scaleless loaches, the species is sensitive to copper and should receive half-doses of any medication, with careful monitoring. It is best kept with other cool-water, fast-water species rather than in a standard tropical community tank.
Conservation
Paraprotomyzon multifasciatus has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. However, the ecological profile of this species — a strict rheophile endemic to fast-flowing streams of a restricted range in eastern Sichuan and lowland Tibet — places it in a category of freshwater fish that is often vulnerable to hydrological modification. Dam construction, flow regulation, siltation from upland agriculture and deforestation, and water abstraction can eliminate hillstream loach habitat rapidly and permanently, and P. multifasciatus is reportedly absent from reaches where flow has been reduced by reservoir impoundment.
The aquarium trade in this species is minimal and unlikely to constitute a significant pressure. The greater conservation concern is habitat integrity in its native stream systems. Given the pace of infrastructure development in China's upland river catchments and the species' dependence on fast, clear, well-oxygenated water, a precautionary approach to its status is warranted even in the absence of a formal IUCN assessment.
