Paraprotomyzon niulanjiangensis is a small, highly specialised hillstream loach from the Niulanjiang river system of Yunnan Province, southern China — a stream endemic so tightly bound to fast, cold, rock-walled current that it has evolved a flattened body and a ventral adhesive disc to hold station against it. Reaching a maximum of about 1.5 in, it is one of several diminutive torrent specialists in the genus Paraprotomyzon, all confined to hill streams of southern China, and is assigned to the family Gastromyzontidae (the torrent or sucker loaches). As a biofilm grazer that starves in bare or still tanks, and a rheophile that suffocates in warm, under-oxygenated water, it sits firmly outside the beginner's repertoire — but it rewards the keeper who can replicate a cold, high-flow, mature river tank.

Taxonomy & naming

Paraprotomyzon niulanjiangensis was described in 2005 by Lu, Lu and Mao on the basis of specimens from the Niulanjiang river (also rendered Niulan Jiang), a tributary system draining into Dianchi basin in Yunnan Province, China. The species epithet niulanjiangensis is a Latinised toponym meaning simply 'of the Niulanjiang' — a straightforward practice when a species is known from a single drainage.

The genus Paraprotomyzon belongs to the family Gastromyzontidae Fowler 1905, the torrent loaches or sucker loaches of East and Southeast Asia. Gastromyzontidae was long folded into a broadly defined Balitoridae, but molecular and morphological revisions have revalidated it as a distinct family. Within Gastromyzontidae, Paraprotomyzon is one of several closely related genera of small, dorsally flattened hillstream fishes endemic to China. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) recognises the combination Paraprotomyzon niulanjiangensis Lu, Lu & Mao, 2005 as valid.

Morphology

Like all members of Gastromyzontidae, Paraprotomyzon niulanjiangensis is dorsoventrally flattened — evolved for life on the underside of rocks and across cobble in torrent current. The body is broad and depressed anteriorly, narrowing toward the tail; the paired pectoral and pelvic fins are held horizontally and, together with a flattened belly, form an effective adhesive surface against smooth bedrock. This is not a fleshy suction cup but a hydrodynamic effect: fast water pressing down on the spread fins pins the fish to the substrate.

Maximum recorded standard length is 1.5 in, making this one of the smaller hillstream loaches. The skin appears nearly scaleless to the touch — scales are small, deeply embedded and reduced — and this thin dermal layer, as in related genera, carries practical implications for medication sensitivity. There is no erectile suborbital spine (the hallmark of botiid loaches rather than gastromyzontids); the head carries small barbels around the mouth, which is adapted for rasping biofilm from rock.

Habitat

The Niulanjiang river flows through hilly terrain in northeastern Yunnan before joining the upper Jinsha Jiang (upper Yangtze) system. The natural habitat of Paraprotomyzon niulanjiangensis is fast-flowing, clear, cool hill stream over bedrock, cobble and gravel — the archetype of a rheophilic, high-oxygen environment. Water temperatures in Yunnan hill streams at this elevation vary seasonally but are characteristically cool, broadly in the range 61–75 °F (61–75 °F); the fish is not a warm-tropical species.

As a demersal, bottom-hugging fish it occupies the benthic zone of riffle and run habitats, where current is strongest and the rock surfaces are coated in diatoms, algae and microbial biofilm. It is a strict freshwater species with no tolerance for brackish conditions, and its known range is extremely restricted — confined to the Niulanjiang drainage of Yunnan Province, China.

Feeding

Paraprotomyzon niulanjiangensis is a biofilm and aufwuchs grazer. Its trophic level is estimated at approximately 2.8 on the FishBase scale, consistent with an herbivorous to detritivorous diet heavy in microscopic algae, diatoms, bacteria and organic matter scraped from hard surfaces. The underslung, rasping mouth is shaped for exactly this purpose: pressing against rock and harvesting the thin, living skin of microorganisms that coats submerged stone in clean, well-lit streams.

In the aquarium this dietary specialism is the single greatest source of keeper failure. A tank without a mature, well-established biofilm coating — one that has been running for months and is rich with algal growth on rock and glass — cannot sustain this fish. Algae wafers (spirulina-based) and blanched vegetables such as courgette, cucumber and spinach are useful supplements, and small frozen foods (microworm, baby brine shrimp) are accepted, but the biofilm layer on rock and hardscape must be present as a constant grazing resource. The fish cannot compete at feeding time with faster or more aggressive tankmates.

Mating

Nothing specific is documented about the mating behaviour or sexual dimorphism of Paraprotomyzon niulanjiangensis. In the wider hillstream loach assemblage, males and females of many small gastromyzontid species are similar externally, with ripe females showing a plumper abdomen as the most reliable field mark. Some species, particularly in the genus Sewellia, show pronounced tubercles on the snout or pectoral rays in breeding males, but whether Paraprotomyzon exhibits comparable secondary sexual characteristics has not been recorded in the available literature.

Given the species' restricted range and data-sparse status, courtship behaviour in the wild remains undescribed. The rheophilic breeding strategy seen across Gastromyzontidae — spawning among stones in fast water, triggered by seasonal conditions — is the most plausible framework for this genus, but it has not been confirmed specifically for niulanjiangensis.

Breeding

There are no documented accounts of Paraprotomyzon niulanjiangensis being bred in home aquaria, and its restricted range and obscurity mean that it is unlikely to be held in any significant numbers outside specialist collections. For the family at large the picture is honest: most hillstream loaches are rarely or never bred in the aquarium, and Paraprotomyzon is no exception.

The breeding mode expected on phylogenetic grounds is egg-scattering with no parental care: ripe fish would deposit eggs among stones and gravel in fast, cold, oxygen-rich water, with the eggs developing unattended in the current. A few gastromyzontid species — Sewellia lineolata is the most-cited example — have been spawned in mature, strongly-flowing river-style tanks, but most genera, and certainly most species this obscure, remain unspawned in captivity. Any keeper achieving a spawning would be contributing genuinely new information.

In the aquarium

Keeping Paraprotomyzon niulanjiangensis successfully demands that the keeper replicate a cold Yunnan hill stream, not a generic tropical community tank. The non-negotiables are high flow — 10 to 15 times the tank volume per hour is the hillstream standard — cool water in the 61–75 °F (61–75 °F) range, and near-saturated dissolved oxygen at all times. A powerhead or dedicated flow pump across a bank of smooth and rough stones creates the rheophilic current the fish needs to behave naturally and cling to surfaces; slow, warm water leads to torpor, immune suppression and death.

The tank must be mature. This fish starves in a newly established or bare aquarium; the rock and glass surfaces need months of algal and biofilm growth before a biofilm-grazer can thrive. Supplementary feeding with spirulina wafers and blanched vegetables helps, but cannot replace a living biofilm substrate. Small frozen foods should be offered occasionally.

Because the skin is nearly scaleless, Paraprotomyzon shares the medication sensitivity common to many loaches: copper-based treatments and full-strength doses of most disease medications should be avoided or applied at half strength with close observation. Tankmates, if any, should be other cool-water rheophiles that will not outcompete the fish at the feeding surface. This is a specialist's species, appropriate for a dedicated hillstream biotope rather than a general community.

Conservation

Paraprotomyzon niulanjiangensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated (NE). This reflects scientific data scarcity rather than abundance: the species is a narrow endemic known from a single river system in Yunnan, and stream endemics in this size class are frequently overlooked by formal conservation assessment programmes.

The pressures on Yunnan's hill-stream ichthyofauna are well documented at the regional scale: agricultural runoff and siltation degrade water quality and smother biofilm substrates; hydropower construction alters flow regimes; deforestation reduces canopy cover and raises stream temperatures; and collection for the aquarium trade, though marginal for this obscure species, can matter for endemics with tiny ranges. Given the known restriction of P. niulanjiangensis to the Niulanjiang drainage, any deterioration of water quality or flow regime in that catchment would affect the entire known population. Formal assessment against IUCN criteria would be warranted.
