Paraprotomyzon yunnanensis is a small hillstream loach endemic to a single river system in Yunnan Province, southern China — a flattened, sucker-bodied torrent fish adapted to clinging to rock in fast, cool, oxygen-rich upland streams. Described by Li, Lu and Mao in 1998 from the Naige Huangni River (Luoping County), a tributary of the Nanpan River system, it has been reclassified by some authorities under the genus Beaufortia, though the original Paraprotomyzon combination persists in the Catalogue of Life and in the literature. It is a biofilm grazer that rasps diatoms and algae from submerged stone surfaces and starves in the bare, warm, still tanks where hillstream loaches are most often killed. It is essentially unknown in the international aquarium trade.

Taxonomy & naming

Paraprotomyzon yunnanensis was formally described in 1998 by Li, Lu and Mao, based on material from the Naige Huangni River (also rendered as Naigehuangni or Yellow Mud River) at Luoping, Yunnan Province, China. The type locality places it in the upper Nanpan River drainage, a tributary of the Pearl River system. The species was assigned to the genus Paraprotomyzon, a torrent-loach genus in the family Balitoridae (hillstream loaches, order Cypriniformes).

Subsequent checklists, including the Checklist of Fishes of Yunnan and the Catalogue of Life (where it appears under taxon ID 6NFRQ), recognise the original combination. Some modern databases have transferred the species to Beaufortia — a closely related hillstream genus also in Balitoridae — listing it as Beaufortia yunnanensis. The two genera differ chiefly in the number and arrangement of scale rows and fin-ray counts; both are small, laterally flattened rheophiles. Until the Catalog of Fishes definitively resolves the placement, this account follows the Catalogue of Life in retaining Paraprotomyzon. A related species, P. niulanjiangensis, is also placed in the genus.

It belongs to a lineage of Southeast Asian and East Asian hillstream loaches (torrent sucker loaches) characterised by a flattened body, broad paired fins modified as stabilising planes, and a fused pectoral-pelvic platform that forms a partial suction disc against rock.

Morphology

Like all members of Balitoridae, Paraprotomyzon yunnanensis is highly flattened dorsoventrally — a body plan that allows it to press close to rock surfaces in fast-flowing torrent environments where an upright-bodied fish would be swept away. The head is broad and depressed, the mouth is positioned ventrally and equipped with fleshy lips adapted for rasping biofilm from hard substrates, and the paired pectoral and pelvic fins are held horizontally, adding adhesive surface area. The overall profile is that of a small disc-shaped loach.

Exact maximum size data in the primary literature are sparse for this species, but closely related Beaufortia species and other Paraprotomyzon typically reach 1.5–2.5 in in total length. The skin is largely scaleless or carries deeply embedded reduced scales, making the fish sensitive to abrasive contact and to copper-based medications. A suborbital spine (the erectile spine characteristic of many balitorid and cobitid loaches) is present. Coloration consists of a mottled or blotched brownish-grey dorsal surface providing camouflage against the gravelly, rocky stream bed; the underside is pale.

Sexual dimorphism has not been formally described for this species; in comparable Beaufortia and Paraprotomyzon species, females in breeding condition are fuller-bodied, but reliable external sexing is not established.

Habitat

This species is known only from the Naige Huangni River at Luoping, Yunnan Province, in the upper Nanpan River drainage — a confined native range that makes it one of China's many narrow-endemic hillstream fishes. The Nanpan River flows through rugged, dissected karst and montane terrain in southeastern Yunnan, and the tributary streams that hillstream loaches occupy are typically shallow, clear, cool, fast-running channels over rock and cobble substrates.

The habitat is characterised by high dissolved oxygen (achieved by constant turbulence), low temperatures relative to lowland rivers, low turbidity, and a rocky or stony bed colonised by periphyton — the biofilm of algae, diatoms and microorganisms that forms the primary food source for grazing hillstream loaches. Flow rates in occupied reaches are substantially higher than in calm lowland rivers. These conditions — cool, clear, fast, highly oxygenated — are the defining requirements of the species and must be replicated in the aquarium or the fish will not survive.

Feeding

Paraprotomyzon yunnanensis is an aufwuchs and biofilm grazer. In its native streams it rasps periphyton — the community of diatoms, filamentous algae, microorganisms and fine organic matter that colonises submerged rock surfaces — using its ventral, fleshy mouth as a scraping tool. This feeding mode is shared across Balitoridae and Beaufortia and reflects the productivity of fast, turbulent, sun-lit streams where biofilm accumulates on stable rock surfaces.

In the aquarium the species requires a mature, well-lit tank with established biofilm on rocks and hardscape. It will starve in a bare or newly set-up tank — the absence of biofilm is the single most common reason hillstream loaches decline quickly after purchase. Supplementary foods should include algae wafers or discs (sinking slowly to reach a bottom-dweller), blanched greens such as spinach or courgette, and small frozen or live foods including bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp. The tank should be maintained in a way that permits continuous algal growth on at least some surfaces.

Mating

No detailed observations of courtship or mating behaviour have been published for Paraprotomyzon yunnanensis or for closely related Paraprotomyzon species. In Beaufortia species — the genus to which this fish is sometimes referred — males in breeding condition are generally slimmer and have been reported to pursue females in well-conditioned, high-flow aquaria. External sexing rests primarily on body depth in ripe females rather than on visible secondary sexual characters.

Conditioning for spawning in the aquarium follows the general hillstream pattern: optimal water quality, cooler temperatures in the lower part of the tolerance range, strong water movement, and a mature biofilm-covered substrate. Whether the species responds to seasonal temperature or photoperiod cues, as some temperate hillstream loaches do, is not documented. The scarcity of the species in the trade means that hobbyist observations are essentially absent.

Breeding

Paraprotomyzon yunnanensis has not been bred in home aquaria, and no confirmed spawning reports exist for this species in the literature or in hobbyist sources. It is honest to state that breeding records are absent.

For the Beaufortia and Paraprotomyzon lineage generally, a small number of related hillstream loach species — most notably Sewellia lineolata — have been spawned in mature, high-flow river tanks, where eggs are deposited among and between stones and gravel with no parental care from either adult. The mode is that of an egg-scatterer in a rheophilic environment: eggs are small, adhesive, and left unguarded. If Paraprotomyzon yunnanensis can be bred at all in captivity, this is the likely mechanism, but it has not been documented. The species should be kept in well-conditioned groups in appropriate high-flow conditions, but a keeper should not expect a breeding outcome. Loaches as a group are egg-scatterers; none are cave-spawning male-guarders (that is a goby trait) or mouthbrooders.

In the aquarium

Paraprotomyzon yunnanensis is rarely or never available in the international trade; it is an obscure Yunnan endemic with no established common name and no sustained collection for export. If encountered, its care requirements are those of a strict hillstream loach: cool (61–75 °F), highly oxygenated, fast-flowing water is non-negotiable. Standard turnover rates of 4–6× the tank volume per hour are insufficient — this fish needs at least 10–15× per hour via a powerhead or circulation pump directed across a rock and cobble landscape. A temperature above 75–77 °F will weaken it; above 82 °F it is liable to die from oxygen depletion and thermal stress.

The tank must be mature — a minimum of several months old with established algae and biofilm on rocks before the fish is introduced. Bare rocks, a bright-but-new tank, or sterile aquarium decor provides nothing to eat. A mixed substrate of smooth pebble, cobble and coarse sand over a flow-deflecting structure gives the fish surfaces to graze and resting spots in lower-velocity zones. A tight cover is needed: hillstream loaches can and do climb wet glass and escape through small gaps.

Because the skin is effectively scaleless, Paraprotomyzon yunnanensis is sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength doses of common treatments. At the same time, the high-flow environment is beneficial because low oxygen is the primary medication risk factor. Half-dose, copper-free treatments are the rule when disease strikes. The species is likely compatible with other small, cool-water hillstream species but may be harassed by faster, larger fish. Groups of three or more are preferable to single specimens; the fish are peaceful and do not compete aggressively over territory.

Conservation

Paraprotomyzon yunnanensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List — no formal assessment exists for this species or for the Beaufortia yunnanensis combination. It is recorded as Not Evaluated (NE).

The species' documented range is confined to a single tributary system in Luoping County, Yunnan — the Naige Huangni River, a component of the Nanpan River drainage. Narrow-range endemism of this kind is characteristic of many hillstream loaches in southern China, where the dissected karst and montane topography has promoted speciation in isolated stream catchments. This same narrow range makes such species inherently vulnerable: any localised degradation of water quality, impoundment, sedimentation, or diversion of the Naige Huangni River could threaten the entire known population.

Yunnan's freshwater fish fauna faces ongoing pressure from hydroelectric development, agricultural runoff, water extraction, and the introduction of exotic species (including alien fish and crayfish). Whether Paraprotomyzon yunnanensis remains common in its type-locality stream, or has declined since the 1998 description, is not known from published surveys. Its apparent absence from the international trade means collection pressure is not a current concern, but the data gap itself is a conservation concern for a fish of such restricted distribution.
