Taxonomy & naming
Paraprotomyzon bamaensis was described by Tang in 1997 from specimens collected in Bama County (Bama Yao Autonomous County), Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, southern China. The species epithet bamaensis is a Latinised toponym meaning 'of Bama', following the standard ichthyological convention of naming a species after its type locality.
The genus Paraprotomyzon belongs to the family Balitoridae — broadly the torrent or hillstream loaches — and more specifically to the gastromyzontid assemblage of flattened sucker loaches endemic to southern and southeastern Asia. Several species are placed in Paraprotomyzon, including P. lungkowensis, P. multifasciatus, and P. niulanjiangensis, all of which are endemic to river systems of southern China. The group is sometimes placed within the family Gastromyzontidae by authors who split that clade from Balitoridae, so both family names may appear in the literature for this species.
Morphology
Paraprotomyzon bamaensis is a small, strongly dorsoventrally flattened loach whose entire body plan is an adaptation to living in fast water. The head and abdomen form a broad, smooth ventral surface that functions as a suction disc against substrate, allowing the fish to hold station against powerful current without being swept away. The pectoral and pelvic fins are splayed horizontally and contribute to this adhesive platform. The dorsal surface is patterned — typically marked with dark banding or mottling against a paler ground — providing camouflage against the pebble-and-rock bed of its native streams.
Size data for this species are sparse; as with many hill-stream loach species that see little hobby traffic, reliable maximum length records are not well documented. Members of the genus are small fish, generally falling in the range of 1.5–3 in total length, consistent with other gastromyzontid loaches from similar habitats. The body is largely scaleless or has minute, deeply embedded scales, making the skin permeable and the fish sensitive to dissolved medications and water-quality lapses.
Habitat
This species is native to the hill streams of Bama County, Guangxi, in southern China — fast, clear, well-oxygenated tributaries running over exposed bedrock, cobble, and boulder. These rheophilic environments are characterised by strong unidirectional current, high dissolved oxygen, low temperatures relative to lowland rivers, and substrates covered in a thick layer of biofilm, algae, and diatoms on which the loach grazes.
Paraprotomyzon bamaensis is a cool-water species. The streams of highland Guangxi run cooler than the tropical lowlands, and the fish is adapted to conditions that would be described as fast, cold and pristine rather than warm and still. Water clarity is typically high, turbidity low, and the current is strong enough to demand morphological specialisation. This habitat is starkly different from the warm, still water of a typical community aquarium, a mismatch that drives most husbandry failures with hillstream loaches.
Feeding
Paraprotomyzon bamaensis is an aufwuchs grazer — it rasps biofilm, diatoms, micro-algae, and fine detritus from the surface of rocks and cobble using its subterminal, somewhat fleshy mouth. This dietary habit is inseparable from the biology of its habitat: the rocks of its native hill streams are blanketed in a living mat of organisms, and the loach grazes continuously across their surfaces in the same way a limpet does in the intertidal zone.
In the aquarium this diet demands a tank that has been running long enough to develop a substantial biofilm on every stone and glass surface. A newly set-up or scrubbed-clean tank offers almost no food and the fish will starve. Supplement with algae wafers, blanched spinach or courgette, spirulina-based sinking foods, and occasional small frozen foods such as daphnia or baby brineshrimp. Unlike botiid loaches or omnivorous cobitids, these fish are not opportunistic hunters and will not thrive on protein-heavy foods alone. Grazing time should be maximised and the rockscape should never be fully cleaned.
Mating
Sexing Paraprotomyzon bamaensis is difficult and rarely documented. In most gastromyzontid loaches, mature females are distinguishably rounder and more robust in the abdomen when in breeding condition, while males are slimmer. Beyond this, reliable external secondary sexual characters are not described for this species in the available literature.
Breeding behaviour in Paraprotomyzon is inferred from the wider gastromyzontid pattern, in which mating involves the male positioning himself alongside or beneath the female and fertilising eggs as they are deposited among or pressed into the spaces between stones and coarse gravel. The strong-current conditions that stimulate breeding readiness in the wild are rarely replicated in captivity, and spawning records for this genus specifically are not known.
Breeding
Paraprotomyzon bamaensis has not, to this author's knowledge, been bred in the home aquarium. Like the majority of hillstream loaches it is an egg-scatterer or egg-burier that places adhesive eggs among stones and gravel in fast-flowing water with no subsequent parental care. The Strategy II breeding approach documented in gastromyzontid loaches broadly describes a pattern in which eggs are deposited in sheltered crevices or pressed into substrate, then left to develop unattended.
A small number of hillstream loach species — most notably Sewellia lineolata — have been spawned in mature, powerfully-flowing river-style aquaria in the hands of dedicated hobbyists. Whether Paraprotomyzon bamaensis could follow that path under suitable conditions is unknown. Hobbyists who wish to attempt breeding would need a mature, high-flow, well-oxygenated tank with a deep, mixed-grade gravel and pebble bed, cool temperatures, pristine water quality, and likely a seasonal temperature drop to simulate the natural trigger. The honest expectation for most keepers is that this species will not spawn in captivity.
In the aquarium
Paraprotomyzon bamaensis is a specialist that demands conditions far removed from those of a standard community tank. The non-negotiable requirements are strong, unidirectional water flow — created by a powerhead or wavemaker aimed across a rockscape — cool water in the range of approximately 64–75 °F (64–75 °F), and high dissolved oxygen. A heater is often unnecessary; an unheated tank in a cool room may be ideal. Overcrowding or sluggish filtration will quickly exhaust the oxygen the fish needs.
The tank must be mature and biologically rich. A minimum run of several months, with live rock surfaces covered in green algae, brown diatoms, and biofilm, is the prerequisite. Without this the fish will gradually waste away regardless of other conditions. A minimum tank volume of around 20 US gal is generally cited for hillstream loaches of similar size; more space allows a more natural rockscape and better flow dynamics. This species is not known to carry an erectile suborbital spine in the way botiid loaches do, but the near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper-based medications — use half-doses of any medication and avoid copper entirely. Keep with other cool, fast-water species of similar size; avoid large, boisterous tankmates and warm-water tropicals.
Conservation
Paraprotomyzon bamaensis has not been assessed by the IUCN Red List and carries a status of Not Evaluated. Its documented range is restricted to Bama County in Guangxi, China — a geographically limited type locality that raises questions about its actual distribution and the size of any wild population, but these questions have not been formally investigated.
Southern Chinese hill streams face ongoing pressure from water abstraction, agricultural runoff, hydroelectric damming, and the general degradation of upland catchments. Specialist rheophilic species confined to small geographic ranges are typically among the most vulnerable to these changes, as their specialised habitat cannot be substituted. This species is not reported in significant numbers in the aquarium trade and is likely wild-collected on the rare occasions it is exported. Until a proper range survey and Red List assessment are conducted, its conservation standing remains unknown.
